SPN Revealed - 1.19 Provenance

Think you know every SPN episode inside and out? So did I, but a new HDTV with a great picture and sound changed all that. I started to see things that I'd never noticed before. After a while I decided to make a list of all the things big and small that I came across, episode by episode.

I'd like to think of this as an in-depth look into Supernatural. It's a collection of interesting observations, continuity errors, goofs, filmmaking techniques, statistics, important (or not so important) information, trivia, and anything else that struck me as unusual.

I'll be examining each episode in order, one at a time. Some of the info. will probably be well known to most of you, but I hope to point out some new discoveries as well.

All the caps in these posts are my own. While most of these will not be suitable for other uses, due to my cropping and highlighting, you're free to take any that you like. All I ask is that you give me credit for them. Thanks! :D

Beware! This post is image heavy.

In the bar scene Dean gives Sam the “give me a minute and I'll get back to you“ hand signal for the second time.

Scene with Dean asleep in the car: The street sign says W. 37th Avenue, which is in Vancouver and runs right along the southern edge of Queen Elizabeth Park. But I can't make out the cross street from the cap, so I don't know exactly where on West 37th this scene was filmed. Anybody who lives in Vancouver know?

One of the more famous inside jokes on the show..."The Krip" license plate on the fancy car outside the auction house, in reference to series creator, Eric Kripke.

The Impala is really filthy!

At the auction there's a shot of Sarah's father talking to Evelyn, who will end up buying the haunted painting later on in the episode.

It's not breaking & entering, it's just entering: There's a lot of lock picking in this episode! Dean breaks into the auction house to get to the painting.

Nice overhead shot of the guys as they search the auction house. It's little touches like this that make the series more cinematic.

Remember this shot from the S1 Gag Reel? All those takes for something that's only in the episode for about 2 seconds. Ah, well...that's filmmaking for you.

Dean finds something amusing in the magazine (or is it a gun manual) at the used book store.

If you look at the old newspaper article closely, you'll see where it actually repeats from the beginning.

Here's a shot of new owner of the painting, Evelyn, who we saw earlier in the auction house.

Continuity Error: When Evelyn puts down her reading glasses, they're facing away from her, but in a following shot, they're turned the other way.

Very cool visual effects work on the CU shot of the glasses, as the straight razor is reflected in the glass.

It's not breaking & entering, it's just entering II: Dean picks the lock to get into Evelyn's house.

Continuity Error: This is a minor one. When Sarah comes to the brother's motel room, there's a shot of Dean where his hand is down on his leg, then there's a cut to Sam, and in the next shot back to Dean, his hand is up on the laptop (and in the same shot, he puts his hand down).

It's not breaking & entering, it's just entering III: Sam picks the lock to get into Evelyn's house the second time.

Yes, Jensen does say “Jared, check it out.“ when they're with Sarah and looking at the painting at Evelyn's house! Jensen's even confirmed it in an interview and said he couldn't believe he did that...and that nobody caught it!

It's not breaking & entering, it's just entering IV: Dean tries to pick the lock when Sam and Sarah get trapped inside the house.

Continuity Error: After Sam uses the fire poker to temporarily drive away Melanie's spirit, there's a CU of Sarah with her hair blown across her face. In the cut to the wide shot, her hair is back in place.

Stunt Doubles in Action: I'm pretty sure (though it's hard to see) that it was Jared's stunt double that took the hit from the desk.

This is a stunt double for Taylor Cole, when Sarah is thrown into the wall.

Continuity Error: In the CU of Sarah as Melanie is about to strike with the razor, there's only some blood visible on Sarah's teeth (from hitting the wall). After Sam throws himself between her and the spirit, there's suddenly blood coming from Sarah's mouth.

Hope you enjoyed this revealing look at Provenance.
