"In My Time Of Dying" & Sarah McLachlan music
I'm still reflecting on the "In My Time Of Dying" episode. So many powerful, emotional moments. And then I find myself listening to Sarah McLachlan music. I just checked out two of her CDs from the public library and discovered I really like her music. Before this I'd only heard a couple of her songs.
So I'm listening to her album "Afterglow" and come to the song "Answer". It's a beautiful song and reading the lyrics, it seemed to fit Thursday's episode.
"Answer" by Sarah McLachlan
I will be the answer
At the end of the line
I will be there for you
While you take the time
In the burning of uncertainty
I will be your solid ground
I will hold the balance
If you can't look down
If it takes my whole life
I won't break, I won't bend
It will all be worth it
Worth it in the end
Cause I can only tell you what I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all gone out
You'll still be burning so bright
Cast me gently
Into morning
For the night has been unkind
Take me to a
Place so holy
That I can wash this from my mind
The memory of choosing not to fight
If it takes my whole life
I won't break, I won't bend
It will all be worth it
Worth it in the end
'Cause I can only tell you what I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all burned out
You'll still be burning so bright
Cast me gently
Into morning
For the night has been unkind
So here are my interpretations of some of the lyrics as I feel they relate to the Winchesters in this episode.
I will be the answer
At the end of the line
I will be there for you
While you take the time
In the burning of uncertainty
I will be your solid ground
I will hold the balance
If you can't look down
To me, this is what Sam is to Dean in this episode. Sam is the anchor for Dean as he struggles as a spirit that is slowly dying.
If it takes my whole life
I won't break, I won't bend
It will all be worth it
Worth it in the end
Cause I can only tell you what I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all gone out
You'll still be burning so bright
This section could be applied to not only Sam in relationship to Dean, but also Dean in relationship to John. But the line "I won't break, I won't bend" just makes me think of Dean. He's always the strong one in the family.
Cast me gently
Into morning
For the night has been unkind
Take me to a
Place so holy
That I can wash this from my mind
The memory of choosing not to fight
Again, this makes me think of Dean's ordeal of making a decision about whether he should fight to stay or to let go and die. These lines: "That I can wash this from my mind, The memory of choosing not to fight" relate to Dean at the end of the episode when he has come out of the coma, but has no memory of his time as a spirit or the decision he was faced with.
Argh. I swear, this episode is just haunting me. It needs to be Thursday already. I need another episode to ponder over besides this one.
