SPN Revealed S2 - 2.06 No Exit

After a huge delay of...*counts*....exactly three months, SPN Revealed is back! Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to these. I'll try my best to not let another 3 months go by before the next one. Thanks again for your patience!

Think you know every SPN episode inside and out? So did I, but a new HDTV with a great picture and sound changed all that. I started to see things that I'd never noticed before. After a while I decided to make a list of all the things big and small that I came across, episode by episode.

I'd like to think of this as an in-depth look into Supernatural. It's a collection of interesting observations, continuity errors, goofs, filmmaking techniques, statistics, important (or not so important) information, trivia, and anything else that struck me as unusual.

Beware! This post is image heavy.

A few important notes...

Over the run of the S1 SPN Revealed posts, I was asked how I'm so good at spotting continuity errors and other little happenings in the episodes. The simple answer is that I'm a Script Supervisor (also known as Continuity in England). I've only worked on a few college student films and an independent film, but I know the job well. The Script Supervisor does a lot, but the basic job description is to keep track of continuity during filming, everything from hair & make-up, to props and lighting. On the set, you have to catch everything you can - quickly. The difference with doing this to SPN episodes is that I can take my time, back up the video countless times, and even look frame by frame.

I don't hunt down these instances to be critical of the SPN crew. I know even from my limited experience how hard they work every week and I have the utmost respect for them. But it's interesting what little mistakes get by even a professional crew. It's also interesting to continue to find new elements to these episodes that many of us have seen dozens of times.

Get Involved: I'm always open to continuity errors, etc. spotted by others. If you see something that I don't have in a post, drop me a comment in the post or a PM, and I'll look into it. If I can confirm it and include it in that episode's post, I'll give you credit for the find.

For this reason, these posts will occasionally be updated. I'll post about the changes when they occur.

All the caps in these posts are my own. While most of these will not be suitable for other uses, due to my cropping and highlighting, you're free to take any that you like. All I ask is that you give me credit for them. Thanks! :D

~~~ 2.06 "No Exit" ~~~
Who else immediately thought "It's the black oil!" when they saw that goo ooze out of the wall? Any X-Phile would recognize this stuff right away. ;)
Simon Said ended with the boys talking to Ellen at the Roadhouse. This episode starts with them tossing their bags in the trunk of the Impala. Did the boys stay at the Roadhouse for the night? Ellen told them in ELAC that she had a couple of beds out back.
Okay....you've got two little kids....and you bring them to a dingy, backroads bar?????
Again like so many other articles on SPN, this newspaper article just starts repeating itself - the same text is in both columns.
In the “Philadelphia woman, still missing article” a Jamie Harrison is mentioned as misssing.....by her boyfriend, Leonard Danforth.
The next article “Foul play...” mentions a “Miss Jane Edwards, 23” who was reported missing.
We learn that Jo's name is really Joanna Beth.
It's not breaking & entering, it's just entering: Sam picks the lock to get into the apartment.
Deanfrown!
I hope that's not loaded: If you watch Sam in this scene it's kind of funny how he's always got the gun he's cleaning aimed at Dean!
I can see you: When the boys are finding out what Jo knows about the case after they take over the newly emptied apartment there's a brief moment where you can see someone just within the frame while the camera is on Alona and Jensen. It's right on the left edge, so it's very hard to spot.
The Lingerie Party flyer has Philadelphia misspelled.
I know I'm reaching here, but isn't that the same desktop wallpaper they had on the old laptop in S1? You'd think Dean at least would want a change. And I like how the "Web Mail" looks an awful lot like the old version of Microsoft's Hotmail.
I was hoping to find some crew members names on this list the boys look through, but no such luck. Thought I'd post these two caps here anyway, just for reference sake.
Coffee Boy: Sam is coffee boy but fails to deliver. Ha!
There's two SammyFrowns in this episode.
Sam's other name is Speedy: After Jo is taken Dean and Sam are walking through the hall with Dean ahead of Sam, yet when they enter the apartment Sam is in the lead.
Continuity Error: When Dean answers his phone, Sam's standing, leaning over the table, but in the very next shot, Sam's sitting at the table.
I found it amusing to see a card for "Big Texas Towing" above the phone at the Roadhouse. ;)
Continuity Error: When we see the boys about to enter the hatch, Dean hands a shotgun to Sam and when we see this action from below ground Dean's holding it by the barrel, but in the next shot above ground, he's holding it by the handle.
Not sure if this is anything or not, but between the two shots as Holmes is blasted with the saltgun, he looks a little different. There is a cool visual effect as Holmes whooshes away into nothing, so maybe it's because of that.
We get a nice blowfish face from Dean during the car scene back to the Roadhouse. :)
Hope you enjoyed this revealing look at "No Exit".
