First Impressions: 5.18 Point Of No Return

I'm changing the way I do my episode reviews, trying to condense things down into something shorter. I hope it's easier for people to read and easier for me to do.

I won't be covering every scene anymore, just hitting the highlights (or trying to). A few small caps will be included and I'll post a link to a more thorough review if you want more information.

If you want a full review, check out this one at Moogi.com and take in all the other tidbits over Super Wiki's post.

Nasty, human-hating Zach at his best in the opening teaser scene. His boss arrives, shaking ground, bright light and all and Zach gets a 2nd chance at the Winchesters. Love the effects work with the guys getting their eyes burned out. Ouch.

I love the whole Dean-packing-up-his-life scene. The sad piano, the enhanced sound effects along with the lack of normal sound, the long looks in the mirror at himself as if he's either measuring if his decision is right or he just wants to remember how he looked when he was still him. I love how all that goes in that box is his most personal objects: his leather jacket, his car keys, his gun, and that letter he writes on the motel stationary. These are items he wants to be remembered by, which is a truly sad and sobering thought because Dean Winchester is far more than the mere contents of a cardboard box.

Nice little touches....Dean putting Bobby's name on the box and the room number he's in (seen when Sam appears in the doorway)...100.

Dean seems genuinely surprised that Sam found him. He shouldn't be. Sam's learned almost everything from his big brother, including tracking someone. ;)

Sam: What the hell, man? This is how it ends? You just…walk out?
Dean: Yeah, I guess.
Sam: How could you do that?
Dean: How could I? All you’ve ever done is run away.
Sam: And I was wrong. Every single time I did.

Sam wants Dean to wait, promises Bobby's working on something, but Dean sees right through it. He knows Sam's going to stop him and gears up for a fight. I love how Jensen sounds a little breathless here. Dean knows Sam's going to fight him, but he doesn't want this, doesn't want a near repeat of the motel room fight. But Sam's brought help, Castiel. Heh.

Dean's comment to Bobby that he's not his father is quite shocking, but then Dean's at the end of his rope here. He's ready to cut off all ties because he believes he's being the practical one (nice mirror to how Sam felt at the end of S4, btw) and he's ready to sacrifice himself for the cause. I do like Sam giving him that disappointed look though and Dean's subsequent guilt for it.

And you gotta love Bobby for shoving the promise he made to Dean back in his face. "Because I promised you I wouldn’t give up!" Bobby being all gruff & tough worked well last season in 4x22, but I think Dean's too far gone this time to care.

Nice rack focus there too, from Sam to Dean. *iz filmmaking geek* :D

"Cas are you okay?" Uh....an angel suddenly hunching over in pain? Stupid question, Sam. LOL

Awesome to see Cas using his new fighting skills again. *g*

Question: If Sam & Dean salted and burned Adam's body at the end of "Jump The Shark", how did Zachariah manage to bring him back? The only other cremated body we've seen come back like that was Bobby's wife in 5x15 and that was Death's doing. Zach must have worked some pretty heavy mojo to pull this resurrection off.

Love how Bobby yells out "Boys!" when Cas appears with Adam. Something about him calling them that fills me with glee! I guess it's because so many of us (and the crew) call Jensen & Jared that. ♥'s :D

So Adam was told he's going to be Michael's vessel to take out the devil and save the world. Cas points out that maybe the angels are moving on from Dean and since Adam's from the same bloodline that it could work, but Sam's not buying it. "Look, no way. After everything that's happened? All that crap about destiny? Suddenly the angels have a Plan B? Does that smell right to anybody?" Gotta admit....I'm with Sam on this one.

Kudos to Jake Abel on another amazing performance. We're finally getting to meet the real Adam and it turns out he's a lot like Dean. A lot! When Sam tries to talk to him in the kitchen and gets nothing but bitter, blunt, snarky retorts back, it's classic Dean Winchester. I can't help but feel for Sam here. Now he's got two cynical brothers to deal with.

Dean: "I’m serious. I mean, think about how many people we've gotten killed, Sam. Mom, Dad, Jess, Jo, Ellen. Should I keep going?"
Don't you love it when Dean says Sam's name like that? In that hushed whisper. Just like we first heard it in S2's "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things". *heart flutters* I love how Jensen does that, gets that emotion.

Dean: "I’m tired, man. I’m tired of fighting who I'm supposed to be."
And hasn't this been the essence of Dean for a long time now? Since S2 on, I'd say. So much has been on his shoulders, it's no wonder he's given up.

Sam: "Well, do you think maybe you could take a half a second and stop trying to sacrifice yourself for a change? Maybe we could actually stick together?"
Happy to see how Sam finally gets it about Dean. He's probably known this for years, but I think in light of their recent trip to heaven it really opened Sam's eyes to what Dean's been going through his whole life, the sacrifices he's made for his family. Either way, it's nice to see Sam verbally recognizing how little Dean thinks of himself and how ready he always is to die in place of someone else.

Dean: I just…I—I don’t believe.
Sam: In what?
Dean: In you. I mean, I don’t. I don’t know whether it’s gonna be demon blood or some other demon chick or what, but…I do know they're gonna find a way to turn you.
Sam: So you’re saying I’m not strong enough.
Dean: You’re angry, you’re self-righteous. Lucifer's gonna wear you to the prom, man. It's just a matter of time.
Sam: Don't say that to me. Not you...of all people.
Dean: I don’t want to. But it’s the truth. And when Satan takes you over, there's got to be somebody there to fight him, and it ain't gonna be that kid. So, it's got to be me.

Ouch! More hurtful words from Dean, but you can tell he's been carrying this inside for a long time and it's hard for him to say it. This sounds like another call back to the motel room scene in "When The Levee Breaks". A lot of the same things are said, especially Sam's reaction. I wonder if some of this isn't because of Dean's future trip in "The End"? He's seen that scenario where Sam said "yes", where Lucifer told him no matter what he did Dean would always end up there. Still....it's sad that Dean has no faith in his brother after all the strides Sam's made this season to try and turn things around. :(

Sneaky Dean! Kinda mean using the angel-blood-dispelling trick on poor Cas (considering he's the one that taught him how), but it did work. ;)

Aw, Adam's happy playground dreamland. Too bad it comes with Zachariah. He's very intent on twisting Adam's mind around about his brothers, calling them "psychotically, irrationally, erotically codependent on each other". Yes, he did say erotically. I know there's been a lot of question about that and some people feel it's the show doing a shout-out to Wincest fans. Maybe. More likely it's more of Zach's nastiness. He doesn't want Adam to believe what Sam & Dean say. He backs this up with, "Trust me, kid, when the heat gets hot, they're not gonna give a flying crap about you. Hell, they'd rather save each other's sweet bacon than save the planet. They're not your family." And of course, we know that's simply not true. But Adam's eager to get his mom back, so he's pretty willing to believe Zach's lies.

Ooooh. Cas has had enough. Dean learns the hard way that you don't wanna piss off your angel buddy. Ouch! That alley scene was great. Nice to see Castiel finally showing some real human emotions. He did give up a lot for Dean and you can't blame him for wanting to beat the crap out of him for giving in to Zachariah & Michael's demands.

Sam: Bobby, what do you mean, “Adam is gone?”
Bobby: Should I say it in Spanish?
SAM: He’s gone how? What the hell, Bobby?!
Bobby: Watch your tone, boy.

Heehee! Love it when Bobby refuses to take any of the boys' attitude.

Cas returns with Dean and totally dumps him on Bobby's bed. LOL!
Guess Dean's no longer on Cas's Christmas card list. :P

Meanwhile, Adam's in heaven's Green Room, scarfing down beer and burgers like were offered to Dean at the end of S4. Zach shows up and reveals Adam's not Michael's vessel, he's just the bait for Dean. "Hey, if it’s any consolation, you happen to be the illegitimate half-brother of the guy we do care about. That’s not bad, is it?" Ah, Zach....you gotta love how manipulative he can be.

Zachariah: The Winchesters got one blind spot, and it’s family. See, Sam and Dean, they’re gonna put aside their differences and they're gonna come get you, and that is gonna put Dean right…here…Right where I need him. This is the night, kid! Our night. Michael’s seen it. The tumblers finally click into place, and it’s all because of you. And me. But who’s keeping score?
So Michael is Zach's boss and he's seen how this is going to play out. Interesting.

Dean wakes up in the Panic Room....handcuffed.
Mmmm....yeah the hand porn alone has me all flaily. *g*

Dean: Word to the wise: don’t piss off the nerd angels.

Sam catches Dean up on Adam being taken by the angels to the heavily guarded Green Room and says he's bringing Dean along to rescue the kid. Dean, of course, is still set on saying yes, trap or no trap. Sam has total faith in Dean now...."When push shoves, you'll make the right call." Dean points out that he'd let Sam rot in there, has done it before. He wants to know why his brother is doing this and Sam says that one thing that makes my heart melt..."Because...you're still my big brother." Awwww.

Wait. The Green Room is in an abandoned muffler factory in Van Nuys, CA???? LOL!
I'm as mystified as Dean. Who'da thought they'd stick it there?

Cas is all ready to go inside and take on the 5 angels guarding the place. Dean thinks it's suicide.

Castiel: Maybe it is. But then I won’t have to watch you fail. I’m sorry, Dean. I don’t have the same faith in you that Sam does.

Ooooh. Ouch. You know things are bad when your own personal angel stops believing in you. :(

More Cas fighting! Nice! But soon he's surrounded. Uh oh. Then he's opening his shirt to reveal a bloody sigil carved onto his chest which effectively wipes out the angels....and Cas as well. Gah! That was cool, but....where's Cas?

Dean goes in, finds Adam and yep, Zachariah's there. It's a trap. But the boys were clearly expecting one because Sam tries to stab Zach from behind only to be thrown into a big iron screen. Ouch! Before long he's got Adam and Dean coughing up blood. Oh no! Zach again mentions how his boss knew how this was going to play out, "You, me, your hemorrhaging brothers." Poor Dean. He's trapped and he knows it. Like Zach says, there's never been a choice. He knows Dean will do anything to save his family. That bastard. Dean's broken, "Stop it! Stop it right now." killed me. Oh, man. This hurts.

Dean finally breaks and says yes and the look on Sam's face and his weak "Dean"....*wibbles* But Dean can't let his brothers suffer and die in front of him....he can't. Zach starts to call Michael. Then something happens.

Sam and Dean exchange some looks....Dean sad, a little regretful and Sam, willing him not to do this. Maybe that's what Dean finally sees because his expression changes and he gives a little smile and wink to Sam. Awww....*dies* Yep, I'm dead at this point. Totally lost in the mushiness of it all.

Then Dean lays out his terms....he'll say yes to Michael only if some people are protected AND....he snuffs out Zachariah. Hee! Awesome. I love Zach's nervous laugh. Now who's in charge? Eh, buddy? :P This is Dean Winchester you're dealing with here. He always has a plan!

Dean: I said…before Michael gets one piece of this sweet ass…he has to turn you into a piece of charcoal.

Whoo-hoo! Badass Dean is back!!!
I love how he doesn't even flinch when Zach rushes over and grabs him by the jacket, right up in Dean's face.

Zach: You listen to me. You are nothing but a maggot inside a worm’s ass. Do you know who I am…after I deliver you to Michael?
Dean: Expendable.
Zach: Michael’s not gonna kill me.
Dean: Maybe not. But I am.

Totally didn't see that coming. Whoah! Dean stabs him right through the head with the angel sword. You gotta wonder about this though, considering only angels can kill other angels, what does that make Dean? He killed the Whore of Babylon in the previous eppy and that could only be done by a servant of Heaven. Hmmmm..... The light reflecting in Dean's eyes when Zach died has got to be a clue as well. Some people have wondered why his eyes didn't burn out, which is a good question. No doubt Sam and Adam closed their eyes against the bright light, but Dean didn't. I have my theory of course. Dean has some angel blood in him. It would make sense....if Sam has demon blood, that Dean would have the opposite. There's more to it, naturally, but I'll discuss my wacky theories later. Love the burnt angel wings on the floor and wall. That never ceases to be cool.

Sam & Dean get out of the room but not Adam. I hope Michael did something nice for once and at least let Adam be with his mom. Not sure I'm buying another rumor floating around that Michael took Adam as a temporary vessel. I don't think that works for him, like it does for Lucifer. He's pretty set on using Dean.

I love this last scene! *gushes*

Sam: I saw your eyes. You were totally rockin’ the “yes” back there. So, what changed your mind?
Dean: Honestly? The damnedest thing. I mean, the world’s ending. The walls are coming down on us, and I look over to you and all I can think about is, “this stupid son of a bitch brought me here.” I just didn’t want to let you down.
Sam: You didn’t. You almost did. But you didn’t.
Dean: I owe you an apology.
Sam: No, man. No, you don't.
Dean: Just...let me say this. I don't know if it's being a big brother or what, but to me, you've always been this snot-nosed kid that I've had to keep on the straight and narrow. I think we both know that that's not you anymore. I mean, hell, if you're grown-up enough to find faith in me…the least I can do is return the favor. So screw destiny, right in the face. I say we take the fight to them, and do it our way.
Sam: Sounds good.

Awwww....now that's the Dean Winchester we all know and love! Sam's faith and trust brought him back. Did you see how he got a little teary-eyed at the very end? Awww...Sammy. You did good, kid. I really hope this means they'll trust each other. I hope it's not just words. I want to believe they've really reached some kind of understanding about each other. The truth is that they're better together, working as a team. Dean's re-dedication to their struggle is something we haven't heard from him since S3's "No Rest For The Wicked"..."We take this knife, and we go after Lilith our way. The way dad taught us to. And if we go down, then uh... then we go down swinging." Different words, but the exact same sentiment. They have to stick together and believe in each other, not in what the angels and demons want from them.

TEAM FREE WILL!!!!! \0/
Any doubt that I loved this eppy? I didn't think so. *g* One of SPN's best I'd say and a perfect 100th episode! :D
