First Impressions: 4.18 The Monster At The End Of This Book
I've abandoned my full-length episode reviews for these shorter, First Impressions posts.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

I'm trying to get this posted as soon after the episode as possible, again by using caps made from my recording of the episode. Hopefully there's still some squee left out there. ;)
The notes this time were all done on my 2nd and 3rd viewings of the episode. There was simply too much going on to take notes during the actual airing.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.

Sam called Chuck over...
Sam wants to know if he knows about the demon blood....and he does, but hasn't written it.
Sam admits his blood addiction scares him, but he feels he has no choice. He has to take over and take out Lilith and stop the apocalypse because Dean can't. Dean's not the same since coming back from Hell. He's trying to return the favor for Dean looking out for him his whole life. Aww...Sam.
He really is in denial about the power he gets from the demon blood.
Chuck's got him figured out alright....

Dean goes to get Chuck....but Chuck doesn't want to be around Lilith. Can't blame him there.
Dean gives him the “you're a hero” speech....which doesn't work, so he resorts to the gun threat. LOL

Doesn't sound like what Chuck saw was good.....Eeep.
Zach won't let him go tell the boys....or kill himself.
Chuck: “What am I supposed to do?”
Zachariah: “What you always do.....write.”
Big thumbs up for an awesome tribute to the fans wrapped up in an episode that goes from fun to serious. It's a testament to the brilliant writing on this show. I loved all the fandom elements. It was fun to see the show put us all under the microscope while showing their appreciation for us at the same time. They really didn't miss much. But once all of that was out of the way, the episode returns to story arc mode and we get a lot. There's Lilith, a prophet named Chuck, the boys opening up a bit more to each other, more info. about angels, and another hint that this journey of Sam & Dean is way more important than anyone could have imagined.
I'm glad we got a clearer picture of where the boys stand with each other after recent events. Dean's back on the job, admitted that he's afraid of where Sam's headed, and knows about his increased powers and taking out Alastair. Sam expressed his doubts and fears over what's been happening to himself, that Dean isn't Dean anymore, and that he's now taking the job of stopping the Apocalypse on his own shoulders. Too bad all of that was only confessed to Chuck, who knows it anyway. I can only imagine what's going to happen when Dean finds out about the demon blood addiction. It ain't gonna be pretty. I did like seeing that Sam does appear to have good intentions with his actions as I suspected. He thinks he's taking over for Dean. It's his turn to be the hero and make the sacrifices to save the world because Dean can't. It may seem noble, but he's losing control. This is the first time we get a glimpse that he knows he has a problem, but he doesn't feel there's a choice. It gives me hope, but it also breaks my heart because he's going to continue to lie to Dean. Sam's choosing a dangerous path. Will he end up saving the world only to lose himself?
It's good to see Dean back in charge. He takes that leap of faith and prays for help. It's a big step that even Castiel acknowledges. This allows him to get the info. he needs to come to Sam's rescue, with some angelic help backing him up.
This episode exemplifies what makes Supernatural a unique show. What other show can poke fun at itself and it's fans while telling a very serious story involving the deep mytharc of the series at the same time? It's staggering just thinking about it. Bravo show! And I'd also like to say thanks for that laundromat scene, which I've been wanting for a long time. It wasn't how I envisioned, but it was so funny and amusing that I didn't care. I loved seeing the boys actually talk and even get some of that old brotherly ribbing back. There were also so many hilarious lines in this hour - many of which I really want to make into icons. ;)
As for the ending? Whoah, show. Way to torture us a little more. Kripke, you evil genius, you! Makes me believe the payoff is going to be huge....and painful. Eeep.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
