Saturday was a full, fun day
Jul. 11th, 2010 12:43 amIt's after midnight and we've only been home for a couple of hours. :P
What a fun day we had though. I'm super tired, so I'll just hit the highlights.
Note: Pics and maybe even some video will follow in the next several days.
To catch everyone up, Saturday me, my mom, aunt, and grandpa drove to Elbe, WA to ride the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railway. We rode on the old steam train and it was a ride of around 2 hours out to Mineral Lake and back to the station.
++ We left around 10 a.m. and drove the 55 miles to the little town of Elbe. Drove through lots of farmland and then past beautiful mountain lakes and continually had gorgeous views of Mt. Rainier!
++ The weather, which has been so hot all week, was finally pleasant....warm with a very nice breeze. Plus, lots of sun and clear skies.
++ Way out in the boonies (as we like to say out here) mom and I spotted a sign for a Jensen Road. We both giggled. :D
++ We arrived at the station in Elbe about an hour before the train was supposed to leave, but luckily there were some benches on the shady side of the building where we could wait.
++ The ride was wonderful! We went through beautiful woods, over rivers, and of course, past a lovely view of Mt. Rainier! All the while, you're rockin' & rolling on very old railroad cars on even older (built in 1902) tracks. There's also the smell and sounds of the steam whistle. Great fun! :D
++ There were a lot of people on the train, especially a lot of families with young kids.
++ On the way to the lake I took nothing but photos with my Canon, but on the trip back, I concentrated on shooting video.
++ We drove home, still marveling at the views of the mountain along the way. We wound our way through Tacoma, ate supper at an iHop (yummy!), and stopped along the waterfront on Ruston Way & I took some more pics. Then we drove over to the Des Moines marina for the sunset. :D
