These are just my first impressions of this episode. My full-length review with caps will be posted later. This just gives me a chance to express my initial thoughts about the episode and touch on a few highlights.

With each of these First Impressions posts I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.

Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

Please keep in mind that these notes were initially taken during the airing of the episode and are very fragmented. I've tried my best to go back through them and fill out some thoughts and ideas, but most will be left "as is". Note: "++++++++++" signifies a commercial break.

This first shot is cool....you really don't know what you're seeing at first, that it's a building.
Erie, PA - spa & racquet club

The Dean charm didn't work with this guy.

Dean: I think so.
Morgue Guy: Please go away.
Dean: Okay.

Huh, interesting.....In the sides, this scene is with Dean by himself, without Sam.

Dean eating....awesome
“Dude I'm eating.” heehee
Nothing keeps Dean from his food....lol

Dude, that runner almost looks like Jared!
Oh, this is the guy from the promo photos.
Heh, handy having his watch still measuring his heartbeat on the table.
Hmmm.....did they cut some lines here? The captions have the Doc talking, but he's not saying anything in the sound.
Whoah....he just dug out the guy's heart!!!!

Sam's not going to let Dean go to hell.
Dean...running...bloody.
OMG...Dean!!!!!!!! Noooooo!!!!!!! *cries*

Big surprise...I loved this episode. So many things happening, so many emotions, conflicts, and characters. With only 3 weeks left on Dean's life, Sam's not above a little deception to get a solution. The scene where they decide to go their separate ways and split up was so sad. It seemed like a real goodbye scene, which was hard to watch, but it was done so well by both of them. Minimal dialog with those meaningful looks exchanged. Lovely. When Dean tries to force Sam to go with him because he doesn't want his younger brother going off alone, I couldn't help but think that that's the very thing that soon may happen anyway. It's something that's never really been brought up much in the episodes. How Dean feels about the fact that he's leaving Sam to fend for himself. He'll no longer have Dean to help him hunt. Dean's answer in past episodes has been that Sam will do fine. "You're stronger than me". I would think Dean would be scared to leave Sam behind with so many demons yet to face and send back to hell.

I've liked Bela since day one, so I'm kind of sad to see the end of her character. I really think she was just a victim of the shortened schedule from the writer's strike. We were never given a real chance to learn about her character like we were with Ruby. I didn't really mind, as some fans did, her constantly taking advantage of the boys and gaining the upper hand. The brothers are formidable hunters, but they can't be invincible against everyone. So I didn't mind when she managed to outfox them time and again. The only incident that did bother me a bit was when she stole the Colt. I just can't see Dean being so stupid to open that safe in the closet in her presence. Talk about making it easy for her! But I digress...I'm glad we got to learn more of her story even though some of it seems a little unlikely to me. The big surprise, of course, was the information she provided about Lilith holding Dean's contract...and her's. I truly felt sorry for her in the end. As Dean told her, if she'd only come to them from the beginning and gotten their help maybe they could have saved her. You can tell Dean still really doesn't feel sorry for her, "I'll see you in hell", but he's not cold-blooded enough to just shoot her either. It further show's his strength of character, something even Bela noticed in him. I'll miss the potential the character could have had and Lauren Cohen, who I think did a very good job with the "great thief", Bela.

I really like Rufus and seeing Steven Williams was a total and happy surprise. I hope we'll see much more of him in S4. Will he be an ally for the boys? I don't know. He seems to know a lot and have good connections, but that could well work against them. Still...you remember what Deep Throat said to Mulder in the X-Files...."Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer". But I loved the scenes between Rufus and Dean - great intensity. I'd also like to thank the director for all the beautiful CU shots he gave Jensen in this episode.

I don't have much else to add except that the promo for the finale really hit me hard. I didn't know what I was really expecting, but that end shot wasn't one of them. I have faith in Kripke and company to give us a thrilling (and probably heartbreaking) season finale. Everyone have your kleenex handy Thursday night. *clutches at Dean & prepares to comfort Sam*
