Mt. St. Helens erupted in south-western WA.

Btw, not to be confused...the mountain in my icon is of Mt. Rainier.

I recently got some great satellite images of the volcano from Google maps and thought I'd share. I was only 6 years old when the mountain erupted, but I can still remember seeing the news footage and pictures, and having a fine dusting of the ash fall in our own neighborhood and cover our roses. I never got a chance to see the mountain in person before 1980, but have made a few trips there since and it's an awe-inspiring sight to see all that destruction. There's miles and miles of grey, torn down tree trunks and then the start of beautiful, untouched forest.

Here's a cool video piece from Google, which shows footage of the eruption that Sunday, 28 years ago.

Eruption of Mt. St. Helens, The Travel Videos

This is a YouTube video of the CBS Evening News broadcast covering the eruption back in 1980.

Two satellite views from Google Maps - in clickable thumbnails for my dial-up users. The images are fairly large, but well worth looking at. :)

Mt. St. Helens as it looked from the web cam this afternoon.
