So sorry for the huge delay (a month! Sheesh!). I've been super busy, of course, with my new job and sadly, this series was one of the casualties. But hopefully, now that things are a little less hectic, I can get these posts back on track. :)
Think you know every SPN episode inside and out? So did I, but a new HDTV with a great picture and sound changed all that. I started to see things that I'd never noticed before. After a while I decided to make a list of all the things big and small that I came across, episode by episode.
I'd like to think of this as an in-depth look into Supernatural. It's a collection of interesting observations, continuity errors, goofs, filmmaking techniques, statistics, important (or not so important) information, trivia, and anything else that struck me as unusual.

Get Involved: I'm always open to continuity errors, etc. spotted by others. If you see something that I don't have in a post, drop me a comment in the post or a PM, and I'll look into it. If I can confirm it and include it in that episode's post, I'll give you credit for the find.
For this reason, these posts will occasionally be updated. I'll post about the changes when they occur.
All the caps in these posts are my own. While most of these will not be suitable for other uses, due to my cropping and highlighting, you're free to take any that you like. All I ask is that you give me credit for them. Thanks! :D
~~~ 2.02 "Everybody Loves A Clown" ~~~
Continuity Error: When they pull up to the Roadhouse, in the wide shot you can see Dean walking towards the building, but in the very next shot he's still standing by the minivan.
Trivia: Ash/Chad wears Old Navy underwear.
Poster seen on the wall behind the bar: Big Georges's Guns & Ammo “We've got you covered”. You can also see a flyer for Roy LeGrange, the healing reverend from S1's "Faith".
I can see you: As Ash leaves to go analyze John's research, you can see Ellen just on the right edge of the frame.
Another kid/person named Evan! As you know, we'll meet another Evan, Evan Hudson, in "Crossroad Blues".
In Sam and Dean's discussion after meeting with Cooper, you can kinda see the scar makeup on Jensen's forehead. Oh, and Jared has possibly the worst hair ever in this scene! LOL!
The license plates from the minivan: Missouri 5R7 BCO
As the boys are walking on the road, you can see a jet airplane flying in the background.
Jensen does the whole tumble out of Papazian's trailer himself. Nice slide on the grass (blooper, perhaps?) when Sam calls to him, too!
I sometimes wonder if the inserted hand shots we see sometimes aren't Jensen & Jared, but actually the hands of others (crew members, perhaps?). Because when Dean turns off the steam in the fun house, there's some deviation in his hand. There's also a little issue with continuity when at first he's seen gripping the handle with his palm towards the wall and then in another shot, with his palm towards the camera.
This looks like Jensen's hand to me. Longer, more slender fingers.
This, however, looks like a different hand. Stubbier, fatter fingers.
Back to Jensen's hand again as Dean turns off the steam.
Continuity Error: Dean has 2 knives holding him to the wall in the fun house. He pulls the one under his arm out twice: once before he shuts off the steam and then we see him pull it out again afterwards.
Steam blowing, Dean pulls out the one knife under his arm.
Cut to right after Dean shuts off the steam and we can see Dean pull out the same knife from under his arm, which should be gone at this point.
He then proceeds to remove the second knife.
Here's a good look at all the tracking info. seen on Ash's laptop.
This was an awesome little find. *iz filmmaking geek* This is the reason why they "check the gate" at the end of each shot. See that bit of bright blue? That's a speck of dust or dirt that didn't get cleaned out. It appears for only a second or two and I only caught it when I was getting the caps for this post.
Continuity Error: When Dean drinks from his beer in the one shot, he's holding it in the middle, but in the very next reverse shot, he's got his hand on the neck of the bottle.
Dean hits the trunk with the crowbar 17 times.
This episode is dedicated “In Memory of our Friend Peter Ellis” who directed S1 episodes “Bloody Mary” and “The Benders”.
Beware! This post is image heavy.
A few important notes... Over the run of the S1 SPN Revealed posts, I was asked how I'm so good at spotting continuity errors and other little happenings in the episodes. The simple answer is that I'm a Script Supervisor (also known as Continuity in England). I've only worked on a few college student films and an independent film, but I know the job well. The Script Supervisor does a lot, but the basic job description is to keep track of continuity during filming, everything from hair & make-up, to props and lighting. On the set, you have to catch everything you can - quickly. The difference with doing this to SPN episodes is that I can take my time, back up the video countless times, and even look frame by frame. I don't hunt down these instances to be critical of the SPN crew. I know even from my limited experience how hard they work every week and I have the utmost respect for them. But it's interesting what little mistakes get by even a professional crew. It's also interesting to continue to find new elements to these episodes that many of us have seen dozens of times. |
