Warning, this is kind of long...

Recap - 1st impression - I didn't like their music choice...it sounded too upbeat to me - but it's grown on me with each viewing, especially the slow clock ticking down to John's death. They really are doing a nice job with these recaps this season so far. I like how they're making them different each time, right down to the music. So much better than the repetitive recaps of the first season.

On to the episode...

I can't wait to see if any fans spotted themselves in the crowd scenes at the carnival.

Is it just me, or does the young girl, Nora, remind anyone of young Samantha on The X-Files? It looks like her just a little to me.

Let's talk about this clown. Clowns don't scare me. This clown especially doesn't. He's just not that frightening. I mean, we don't actually see him do anything except wave at the little kids, come to their homes, get invited in by the kids, and then get shown off to the parents. What's so scary about that? We're told the parents end up torn to shreds, but we don't see any of it. I gotta admit, I found the whole clown storyline to be a weak subplot to the main story which was Sam & Dean dealing with their dad's death a week afterwards.

After the opening title card (still cool btw), we go straight to the burning of John's body. The brothers stand watching the flames - Dean with tears shining in his eyes and Sam openly weaping quietly. The music here is a very nice soft piano. Dean is just staring, trance-like, unblinking. Sam manages to choke out a question - if John said anything to Dean before he died. Dean's answer is a heartbreakingly whispered "no" and then "nothing" before a single tear falls down his face.

"One Week Later" appears on the screen and we're at Bobbie's place where Dean is working on the Impala. What is that music in the background anyway? I couldn't make it out. There's not much left of the car - no engine, no front seat - and Dean's underneath the car. Sam comes by and offers to help, but Dean turns him down because apparently Sam knows nothing about cars. Sam really wants to know how Dean is doing and as usual Dean deflects it and becomes snarky and angry. They get into an argument (the first of many to come) about what is happening. Sam's upset that Dean hasn't even mentioned about their dad and he thinks they should be looking for the demon and seeking revenge. Dean points out that they have no leads and the colt is gone, so all he can do is work on the car. Sam has cracked John's voicemail code and they hear a message by a woman named Ellen. Sam also tracked down her address so they take off in one of Bobbie's cars to look into it.

Dean is not happy about the car - an old, squealing minivan - "I feel like a freakin' soccer mom!". Love the Captain & Tenille song that's playing in the car. The radio must be stuck or something because that is a song that Dean would never listen to! It just adds more insult to injury.

They've arrived at the dusty Roadhouse bar. It appears no one's home and they break in to find the place empty except for some guy sacked out on the pool table. They separate and Dean meets Jo. Love the whole taking the rifle away from her bit and then her punch to his nose - "I can't see. I can't even see!". Dean looked so cool cocking that rifle too! Hoo boy! This encounter is much better than it was written in the original script sides. Yeah, her punch was still a cheap shot, but it was sort of funny...Dean getting punched in the nose by a girl. Ellen has a gun on Sam as well and soon realizes they're John's boys. BTW, I liked how they both answered "yeah" together.

First impressions - I like Ellen. Jo still seems too young to even eventually become a love interest for Dean. The scenes between her and Dean were awkward and forced. I was willing to wait until I saw her before I passed judgement, but so far I just don't like Jo. They should have chosen an actress that at least looked a little older than 18. She's just a kid and even though she tries to act all grown up...I'm sorry sweetheart...you're just not pulling it off.

They talk and find out Ellen wanted to help John with the demon. Sam then explains that John lost his battle with the demon. Sam does a lot of the talking here instead of Dean. This sort of continues their role reversal that began in Devil's Trap. Sam has sort of taken over as the leader. Dean is being very silent and trying to keep his emotions at bay. You can see this when Ellen says she's sorry about John and asks how they are. Dean immediately says they're ok, but you can see him fighting for some control. He doesn't want to talk about this right now. Ellen knew John a long time ago - "he was like family" and Sam asks for their help.

Enter Ash...I like him. He may very well be a genius, but he's funny too. Love Dean's line about him being a Lynyrd Skynyrd roadie. Ash seems impressed by John's paperwork. He needs 51 hours to work with it. Again, I love the line about Ash's hair "All business up front, party in the back". Dean checking out Jo seems a bit premature and forced. He goes off to talk to her while Sam asks Ellen about a folder on the bar about some killings. Gone, apparently, is the whole bit about the clown killings being Jo's first hunt. Ellen says she was going to give it to a friend.

So Dean and Jo talk and we find out her dad was a hunter and that he died when she was a kid. Dean tries to sweet talk her like his usual self, but he's not his usual self and soon backs off. His heart is no longer in it to pursue any girl right now. He says it's the "wrong place, wrong time". You gotta wonder, though, why he even followed her in the first place. Why is he even interested in her? He's lost interest in everything else, so why show interest in a girl...one that's way too young, imo.

The boys take off to look into the killings and discuss the killer who is apparently a clown. Dean: "You gotta be kiddin' me. A killer clown!" Some nice brotherly banter ensues. Sam is afraid of clowns and Dean remembers. Sam counters with Dean being afraid of flying. Dean: "Planes crash" Sam: "Yeah, and apparently clowns kill" They cover the usual history/exposition about the past killings. They suspect a cursed object may be involved. Dean then brings up how Sam jumped on pursuing this case and Sam says it's what their dad would've wanted them to do. This clearly bothers Dean, but when Sam questions why, he drops it.

Back at the carnival fun house, we have another kid-sees-the-scary-clown scene. "Clowns are your friends" yeah, right. Oh yeah, he's so scary. He just stands there at the parents bed and smiles. Ooooh!

What's with the captioning on this episode anyway? It keeps saying Sam is speaking when it's clearly Dean's voice.

At the carnival Dean finds out from the police about the latest murders and Sam has a brief encounter with a clown - Dean "you get her number?". To look for a cursed object the boys decide to "blend in" and get jobs. The next scene is hilarious, except you kind of have to feel for poor Dean as Sam just laughs at him and won't help. Dean manages to offend the blind man and a little person. Jensen does a great job here, trying to use Dean's smile and charm to get out of the predicament and failing miserably. Are those Jensen's knives, btw? Sam's laugh is great too! The scene in Cooper's office is good too. The chairs! Dean quickly grabs the good one, leaving Sam to sit in the evil clown chair, lol! Big brother gets his revenge. Love Dean's little smirk. Love Sam's accent here too "Yes sir, last year through Texas and Arkansas". Lol! Too cute. But they can't fool Cooper and have to admit they've never worked at a carnival. He tells them this place is for outcasts and not for them. They should go to school, get married, have kids and lead regular lives. If the guy only knew... Sam says they don't want that (school), they want to work.

This, of course, brings up Dean's issues with Sam again. He wants to know if Sam still plans to go back to college after the Demon is gone and Sam says he's rethinking it. Sam says dad would've wanted him to stick with the job. Dean gets angry because Sam never cared before about what their dad wanted and Sam spent his whole life rebeling against John. Sam says that's changed since John died and wants to know what Dean's problem it. Dean states he doesn't have a problem (yeah, right) and walks off. Is that line a call back to Alec at the end of DA's "Berrisford Agenda" or what? Said the same way and with the same attitude.

So we see Sam picking up trash and checking on EMF readings. He goes into the Fun House and starts scanning everything with mixed results. He then calls Dean and says maybe they should be looking for human remains instead of a cursed object. Dean's about to join him when he's ambused by the blind guy. Dean joins Sam and spot a girl who says she sees a clown, which of course, isn't there. They follow the girl's family home and suspect maybe Cooper is their killer, since he worked at both carnivals where the murders took place. Role revearsal again with Dean sleeping in the car as Sam keeps watch of the house. The girl then invites the clown inside and the boys are there to stop it. Things don't go too well. Dean shoots it with rock salt, but the clown doesn't disappear, indicating it's not a spirit at all. The girl is screaming, the clown jumps out the window and soon the parents come down and the whole situation doesn't look good. Next, we see them ditching the minivan because they suspect the parents saw their license plates. Dean's only too happy to get rid of the car and the brothers take off on foot back to the carnival.

As they walk, they get to talking about John and Sam wonders if their dad and Ellen were ever together. Dean says no way. Sam again brings up Dean's silence about their dad, he wants Dean to deal with it. Dean's anger flares up and he says these are Sam's issues and not his. Sam was the one who picked a fight with John just before he died and now he's trying to make up for it, but it's too little too late. "I'm dealing with dad's death. Are you?" An emotional Sam has nothing to say except that he's going to call Ellen about the clown. Turns out it's a rakshasa which feeds on human flesh every 10 to 20 years. They again suspect it's Cooper and they need a brass blade to kill the clown. Sam checks out Cooper's bed (rakshasas sleep on a bed of insects) and Dean goes to the blind man for a brass knife. He finds the clown outfit in the guy's trunk just in time to see the guy turn into the clown (cool and creepy effect, too) and disappear. With knives flying at him, Dean manages to escape and run into Sam. Sam remembers seeing an old caliope (I thik that's what it's called) in the Fun House and they go inside to get the brass pipes from it. They get separated and Dean has to walk through a maze to get to Sam. Dean then gets pinned to the wall by flying knives, leaving Sam to deal with the clown who is still invisible. Dean manages to find the control to the steam for the caliope and turns it up. He tells Sam the clown is behind him and Sam plunges the brass pipe behind him, killing it. I believe this is the first time Sam has actually killed something. Before it was always Dean or John (as in Dead Man's Blood). Is this a taste of what's to come? Is Sam going to start down a dark path into killing? Evil Sam?

Back at the bar, Jo asks Dean if she'll see him again. This scene seems awkward and again, forced. They didn't go out, so why does this scene sound like they did? It's like a big goodbye scene for an established relationship. These two are practically strangers. She's way too perky and happy for my taste. Dean admits that usually he'd be chasing after her, but things are different now. She understands and lets it go at that. Ash appears and has configured his laptop to scan for any signs of the demon. If the demon reappears anywhere in the world, he'll know about it. The boys leave, turning down Ellen's invitation to stay...Dean still has to finish repairing the car. Back at Bobbie's place, Sam approaches Dean to apologise. He admits that Dean is right about him trying to make things up to their dad. But he says he misses John and that he feels "guilty as hell" and that he's not alright. "But neither are you. That much I know." He leaves Dean to get back to work. Dean quietly picks up a crowbar and procedes to smash one of the Impala's windows. He then strikes the trunk repeatedly, eventually punching a hole right through the metal. He then stops, breathing hard and stares towards where Sam walked off looking more lost than ever.

Some final observations...

Sam has pretty much taken over the big brother role in the show right now. He's the one to initiate tracking down Ellen and the hunt for the killer clown. However, as Dean points out to him, his reasons for suddenly being so interested in hunting again are because of his guilt. He wasn't the "good son" who followed his dad on his hunting crusade and Sam even comes to question whether John loved him. Now he's trying to make up for all his rebellion and taking charge. But it's too late. Clearly, Sam now regrets all the fights with his dad and he can't fix what happened. This will tear him apart, the splits have already begun. Sam's emotions are out in the open for everyone to see. His sadness, guilt, anger and frustration seem to be bleeding out of him throughout the episode. He expects Dean to be feeling something too and quickly grows frustrated when his older brother shows no interest in talking about their dad.

One only needs to look at the state of the Impala to know about Dean in this episode. The Impala has no engine...it's "heart" is gone. The car is nothing but an empty shell. Dean is the same way. His heart, his reason to go on and fight the good fight died with his dad. So he allows Sam to run the hunt because he no longer really cares anymore. Dean appears to be emotionless, but it's all boiling just under the surface and occasionally it leaks out. He allows one tear while John's body burns, he has to collect himself when Sam tells Ellen about their dad. The one emotion he shows easily is anger. This anger explodes onto Sam. Dean has lost his direction. Hunting no longer interests him. All he can do is fix the car and hopefully fix himself. He's tired of being asked whether he's alright. He doesn't want to deal with the loss of his dad. He just wants to try and move on. So when he finally lashes out and attacks the Impala with the crowbar, is he attacking himself? Maybe. The Impala, his pride and joy is now just as broken as he is. He no longer cares what damage he inflicts and him attacking something he used to love was just painful to watch. As Dean tries to keep his emotions behind his protective walls he is slowly spiraling out of control.

Jared and Jensen did another great job. Jensen especially with all the angst. The staring and the single tear down the face at the beginning, just devastated me. And the scene at the very end...there really are no words. Their arguments were thankfully coupled with some familiar banter which was very nice to see. The discussion as they're walking back to the carnival was very well acted by both of them. Dean's anger and Sam's vulnerability. They're upset with each other but the love is still there. They're both hurting in their own way and all they have is one another.

Until the next episode...vampires again, cool.
