SPN Revealed S2 - 2.07 The Usual Suspects

Sorry for the tardiness in the return of SPN Revealed. Real life events and then getting the caps ready kept delaying me. I'm currently working on the next several episodes as well, so hopefully I won't keep you all waiting so long again.
Think you know every SPN episode inside and out? So did I, but a new HDTV with a great picture and sound changed all that. I started to see things that I'd never noticed before. After a while I decided to make a list of all the things big and small that I came across, episode by episode.
I'd like to think of this as an in-depth look into Supernatural. It's a collection of interesting observations, continuity errors, goofs, filmmaking techniques, statistics, important (or not so important) information, trivia, and anything else that struck me as unusual.

Get Involved: I'm always open to continuity errors, etc. spotted by others. If you see something that I don't have in a post, drop me a comment in the post or a PM, and I'll look into it. If I can confirm it and include it in that episode's post, I'll give you credit for the find.
For this reason, these posts will occasionally be updated. I'll post about the changes when they occur.
All the caps in these posts are my own. While most of these will not be suitable for other uses, due to my cropping and highlighting, you're free to take any that you like. All I ask is that you give me credit for them. Thanks! :D
~~~ 2.07 "The Usual Suspects" ~~~
You'll notice the name of Christopher Cooper as the writer of the article about Anthony Giles's murder. He's the Prop Master on the show. You'll also notice that the paragraph under the photo is also the last paragraph in the 3rd column.
Coffee Watch: Sam is coffee boy.
Dean takes the top off the coffee, a regular thing for him.
Continuity Error: When Diana is interrogating Sam there's an instance where her hand is palm down on the table...
However, in the very next shot from the reverse angle, her hand is on it's side against the table.
It's not breaking & entering, it's just entering: Dean picks the lock to get into Tony's office.
There are at least 3 SammyFrowns in this episode.
It's not breaking & entering, it's just entering: Dean also picks the lock to get into Karen's house.
Blowfish from Dean when Pete is talking to Diana in the other room.
In the scene with Dean & his lawyer, Dean says the line: “But, you wanna help me...” and while the camera is on the lawyer, you can see Jensen on the left side of the frame and his mouth isn't moving.
Looking at the report Diana is filling out on Giles's murder there's some interesting items. Why are Alcohol and Dom(estic) Violence marked? Why does his residence phone number and his business one match?
You gotta love Dean and his Steve McQueen/"The Great Escape" references. Plus, if this is Jensen's actual handwriting that's just darned cool! :)
Edit: Since there's some question about the handwriting of the guys in this episode, I thought I'd grab a few more caps. IMO, they very well might have done the handwriting themselves, at least for this episode because we actually see them writing.
Sam's handwriting: Note the cast. They probably had a fake cast for his stunt double to wear, but for handwriting why not let Jared write for himself?
Sam/Jared actually writing in the scene.
Dean/Jensen writing in his accompanying scene. This time, note the way he's gripping the pen.
Here in the close-up it's the same grip on the pen.
Continuity Error: There's some continuity errors with Pete in the confession/video scene.
In the first shot outside of the room, you can see Pete has his arms crossed across his body.
The very next shot from inside the room, Pete's hands are on his hips.
The next shot from outside the room, his arms are crossed again, and he's turned to his right some.
Next shot in the room, his hands are on his hips again.
Continuity Error & Ooops: There's also a mistake with Dean as Pete hauls him up out of the chair. In this first shot you can see some paper in Dean's back pocket (probably Jensen's script sides).
However, in the next shot inside the room, the paper is mysteriously missing from the pocket.
Nice bit of continuity at the end of this scene as well. After Pete throws Dean against the wall you can see blood (from Karen) on Dean's jeans in the wide shot.
“Time Life: Mysteries Of The Unknown. Look it up” This book is real...I've seen it at Barnes & Noble.
Continuity Error: When Diana questions Dean about the spirit, there's a shot of Jensen with his hands folded and in the very next shot of her, we see him reflected in the mirror and his hands are just one on top of the other.
The guys are staying at The Aardvark Motel.
Oops: The letters on the window wouldn't show up as lit against the wall, but should be dark with light around them!
The scene with Sam & Diana driving after Pete & Dean looks like it is a process shot. This is when the action is filmed in front of a movie screen showing already filmed material.
Hope you enjoyed this revealing look at "The Usual Suspects".
Beware! This post is image heavy.
A few important notes... Over the run of the S1 SPN Revealed posts, I was asked how I'm so good at spotting continuity errors and other little happenings in the episodes. The simple answer is that I'm a Script Supervisor (also known as Continuity in England). I've only worked on a few college student and independent films, but I know the job well. The Script Supervisor does a lot, but the basic job description is to keep track of continuity during filming, everything from hair & make-up, to props and lighting. On the set, you have to catch everything you can - quickly. The difference with doing this to SPN episodes is that I can take my time, back up the video countless times, and even look frame by frame. I don't hunt down these instances to be critical of the SPN crew. I know even from my limited experience how hard they work every week and I have the utmost respect for them. But it's interesting what little mistakes get by even a professional crew. It's also interesting to continue to find new elements to these episodes that many of us have seen dozens of times. |
