Wow. It's been a long time, but SPN Revealed is back after a 3 month hiatus. Life got busy, there was a little thing called VanCon....it was a lot to handle. But I'm going to try to get back on track now. Enjoy! :D

Think you know every SPN episode inside and out? So did I, but a new HDTV with a great picture and sound changed all that. I started to see things that I'd never noticed before. After a while I decided to make a list of all the things big and small that I came across, episode by episode.

I'd like to think of this as an in-depth look into Supernatural. It's a collection of interesting observations, continuity errors, goofs, filmmaking techniques, statistics, important (or not so important) information, trivia, and anything else that struck me as unusual.

Beware! This post is image heavy.

A few important notes...

Over the run of the S1 SPN Revealed posts, I was asked how I'm so good at spotting continuity errors and other little happenings in the episodes. The simple answer is that I'm a Script Supervisor (also known as Continuity in England). I've only worked on a few college student and independent films, but I know the job well. The Script Supervisor does a lot, but the basic job description is to keep track of continuity during filming, everything from hair & make-up, to props and lighting. On the set, you have to catch everything you can - quickly. The difference with doing this to SPN episodes is that I can take my time, back up the video countless times, and even look frame by frame.

I don't hunt down these instances to be critical of the SPN crew. I know even from my limited experience how hard they work every week and I have the utmost respect for them. But it's interesting what little mistakes get by even a professional crew. It's also interesting to continue to find new elements to these episodes that many of us have seen dozens of times.

Get Involved: I'm always open to continuity errors, etc. spotted by others. If you see something that I don't have in a post, drop me a comment in the post or a PM, and I'll look into it. If I can confirm it and include it in that episode's post, I'll give you credit for the find.

For this reason, these posts will occasionally be updated. I'll post about the changes when they occur.

All the caps in these posts are my own. While most of these will not be suitable for other uses, due to my cropping and highlighting, you're free to take any that you like. All I ask is that you give me credit for them. Thanks! :D

~~~ 2.08 "Crossroad Blues" ~~~
A close-up of the Black Dog article. I also don't think those are Jensen's hands. :P
After Dean's line about the black dog humping, we have a flipped shot of Dean as he holds up the piece of paper. You can see the text is backwards. This must have been done to avoid breaking the 180 degree line.
The police report seen on Sam's laptop has Dean's eye color as brown. Ooops.
Does Jared have a cut on his arm in this scene?
The conversation scene with the dead architect's partner has tons of angles. I counted at least 7 unique angles, with a few of them being used more than once.
1 - Over the architect's shoulder at Sam.
2 - Past the architect at Dean.
3 - Wide Angle.
4 - Next to Sam, towards Dean.
5 - Over Dean's shoulder at the architect.
6 - Straight shot of Dean.
7 - One more Wide Angle from the right instead of the left.
Prince George County? Sounds awfully Canadian to be in Mississippi.
The entire scene with the doctor's maid was shot hand-held. All the shots are moving slightly.
Kind of odd for Sam to be the sloppy one, but check out the no-tie look for him in this scene.
Continuity Error: There's also a continuity error in the scene when Dean flips the photo over to show the handwriting on the back. In the CU Jensen's hand is on the right side of the frame, but in the next medium shot, he's holding the photo on the left side.
Another clever use of a mirror as we see the doctor stand up from the bed and then rack focus to her CU.
Lots of quick cuts in this first scene of the doctor.
Oh, and check out the name of the motel....Baskerville Motel. Heh. A reference to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Hound Of The Baskervilles' anyone? Which "tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome hound."
The cuts of the door handle are really still shots (no film grain movement).
Nice crane shot as the Impala pulls up to Lloyd's bar and the boys get out. The crane starts high, comes down to catch Dean getting out of the car, and then goes up again to show both of them in front of the car. And all in one shot.
One of several overhead shots used in this episode as they dig up the box at the crossroads.
Sammyfrowns!!!!
The Crossroad Demon that makes the deal with Robert Johnson is actress Christie Laing, previously seen in S1's "Hook Man" as Taylor.
Extreme overhead angle as Dean and Sam approach George Darrow's apartment door.
After Evan closes the door on the boys you can see Dean do a lip bite twice (2 different angles) before he kicks the door in.
Dean door kick!
Continuity Error: In their scene with Evan, Dean puts his hands in his pockets. We get lots of shots of Evan and then another shot of the boys reveals Dean has his hands out of his pockets. But then he steps forward, lots of CU shots (w/no sign that his hands have moved) and then as he turns to leave the room, his hands are back in his pockets again. [Hard to really show this in screencaps. I recommend watching the scene.]
This is the first time we hear Dean speak Latin!
This episode ends with the famous “Soon” promo and contains a shot of Dean crouched beside a car from “Hunted” that we never see in the actual episode.
Hope you enjoyed this revealing look at "Crossroad Blues".
