First Impressions: 5.04 The End

A new season and a new set of episode reviews. Enjoy!
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

I'm trying to get this posted as soon after the episode as possible, again by using caps made from my recording of the episode. Hopefully there's still some squee left out there. ;)
These notes were made during my 2nd viewing of the episode. I just wanted to sit and absorb everything from the episode in the initial viewing.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.
Recap: Croatoan, The Colt, Dean is Michael's vessel, Sam is Lucifer's vessel, Sam & Dean split apart.
“Is your soul rapture-ready?” LOL
Dean's settling into a motel room while talking to Castiel on the phone.
Cas wants to find the Colt.
“This isn't funny, Dean. The voice says I'm almost out of minutes.” LMAO Best line of the eppy. *giggles*
Cas wants to join up w/him, but Dean needs sleep. Heh. So he waits...heh. I'm betting that was River Road, btw. ;)
Dean's sleeping when his cell phone goes off and it's Sam, calling to tell him about being Lucifer's future meat suit.
Sam wants back in, but Dean is resistant....worries about Sam seeking revenge, but Sam says it's redemption, that he can do this.
But Dean says they should stay apart...for good. No, boys, no!!!!
Dean's convinced that what they have between them, love and family, that it'll get used against them. Sam asks him not to do this (aw, Sammy), but Dean hangs up with a final goodbye. *wibbles*
Dean wakes up....and not on the comfy bed he was in, but on bed springs alone.
He looks out the window to see utter devastation. Awesome FX work, btw, show. :)
Dean I don't think you're in Kansas anymore.....heh. Well, not the Kansas City you fell asleep in. :P
That Watchman set is very impressive. :)
Someone's watching Dean....
He finds a young girl sitting on the ground.
Yikes! She comes at him with a piece of broken mirror. But he punches her out quickly.
Croatoan written on the wall....”Oh, crap.”
Zombies!!!!!!
Run Dean! Run!!!!!

Military come in and start shooting up the place as Dean hides.
“Do You Love Me”.....Music to kill Zombies by....heh
It's night and Dean crawls through the fencing....sees the sign “No Entry - By order of acting regional command - August 1st 2014 - Kansas City”
He gets a car working, but not his cell or the radio...never a good sign.
Zachariah! w/newpaper in hand and giving Dean the news of how bad things are in this future.
He found Dean through the religious guy outside the motel. Great, now even the angels have spies.
Zach wants Dean to see what happens if he says no to being Michael's vessel.
Dean goes to Bobby's place.....oh no! They killed Bobby! :(
I love how Dean knows where Bobby hid his journal. :)
Camp Chitaqua.....
Oh man! Not the Impala!!!! *weeps*
She's a wreck....and abandoned, weeds growing all around her. So sad.
“Oh, baby. No.”
Dean approaches her and then is knocked out by.....himself. Heh.
======================
He wakes up handcuffed and being interrogated by his future self.
FutureDean (FD) did all the tests, wants to know who he is....
CurrentDean (CD) explains Zach plucked him from the past & brought him here.
FD still wants proof....to tell him something only he would know.
So Dean tried on Rhonda Hurley's pink, silk panties in high school....and he kinda liked it. *giggles*
The Croatoan virus started hitting the major cities 2 years ago....been downhill since then.
CD asks about Sam....there was a showdown in Detroit...from what FD heard, Sam didn't make it. :(
They hadn't talked in 5 years. Oh, man.
FD doesn't trust CD, so he's staying handcuffed while he goes out on an errand.
CD manages to pick out a nail from the floor. Love how you can see some blood on his fingers. This show is awesome about the little details!!!
He heads outside and runs into Chuck! Who wants to know what to do about the camp running out of supplies. CD suggest sharing. Hee!
Ooops! Angry girl alert! Reesa. She thought they had “a connection”....hee!
Some things never change, huh, Dean? ;)
CD finds Castiel.....or...HippyCastiel...surrounded by pretty women.
“...get washed up for the orgy.” o.O
Cas figures out that Dean's different right away.....cool!
Cas can't strap on his angel wings and send him back.
Dean: “What are you, stoned?”
Cas: “Generally. Yeah.”
Dean: “What happened to you?”
Cas: “Life.”
They head outside, in time to see FD arrive w/ three men. They get out, pop open some beers, and FD calmly shoots one of the men, dead. Whoah.
The two Deans go back inside....CD wants an explanation.
FD saw that the guy was infected, so he took him out early.
“It's 2014. Plug'in some Croat, it's called common place.”
FD lays down the law.....CD stays put. Oooh.....even future forceful Dean is hot. ;)
They share a drink and then CD asks what the mission was about.
Oooh....The Colt.
FD is going to use it to kill the devil....tonight.
=======================
FD, CD, Reesa, & Cas are having a meeting about the Colt.
So FD has gone back to torturing....eep.....that doesn't sound good.
I love how Cas is so amused by CD....hee!
“What? I like past you.” *g*
FD knows where Lucifer is....and it's in a hot zone.
Cas calls it crazy, but he's coming anyway.
CD is supposed to come along, too. He wants to know why.
FD wants him to see “our brother”. Sam didn't die....he said yes....”The big yes”
Oh, man. :(
FD says there's no choice now.....he has to kill Sam/Lucifer and CD needs to see it.
He needs to say yes to Michael.
FD wishes now he had....tried over and over again, but the angels left. It's too late for him.
“I was wrong. Dean...I was wrong. I'm beggin' you. Say yes. But you won't. 'Cause I didn't. Because that's just not us. Is it?”
Chuck tells CD to hoard toilet paper for the future...hee!
The group heads out....CD is riding w/Cas.....who's taking drugs.
CD wants to know what's up with him. Cas isn't an angel anymore. The other angels left and his mojo drained away. He's basically human.
Hee! I like Future Cas. *giggles*
The group walk down the street...heavily armed.
They get to the building (Riverview!)....and CD sees that FD is lying to everyone.
He confronts him about it....turns out it's a trap and FD is sending the others in the front as decoys. They'll be killed so the two of them can get in through the back.
“You wanna use their deaths as a diversion. Aw, man something is broken in you. You're making decisions that I would never make. I wouldn't sacrifice my friends.”
“You're right. You wouldn't. It's one of the main reasons we're in this mess, actually.”
CD says he won't let FD do this....and gets clocked soundly. Ooops.
CD wakes up...to the sounds of gunfire.
He runs over....sees Sam/Lucifer w/his foot on FD's neck. And he kills him. Eeep!
=======================
It's showdown time.
Lucifer: “You've come a long way to see this? Haven't you?”
Dean thinks he'll kill him....”Kill you? Don't you think that would be a little....redundant.” *snort*
Lucifer recognizes this must be painful for Dean...it really is, too. *wibbles*
Lucifer doesn't want to destroy the earth....”the last, perfect handywork of God”
He tells Dean why he was cast out of Heaven....he calls humans “hairless apes”...ouch! He wouldn't bow down to “flawed, murderous” human beings...and for that God had Michael cast him into Hell.
Dean's not buying the “sympathy for the devil crap”. He's the same evil Dean's been fighting all his life....the only difference is the size of Lucifer's ego.
Lucifer is cool, calm....he likes Dean and sees what the other angels see in him.
He starts to walk away, but Dean stops him...
Dean: “You better kill me now!”
Lucifer: “Pardon?”
Dean: “You better kill me now. Or I swear, I will find a way to kill you and I won't stop.”
Lucifer: “I know you won't. I know you won't say yes to Michael either. And I know you won't kill Sam. Whatever you do, you will always end up....here. Whatever choices you make, whatever details you alter...we will always end up....here. I win. So I win.”
Dean: “You're wrong.”
Lucifer: “See you in five years, Dean.”
In a flash Lucifer disappears, along with FD's body, leaving Dean alone...with the roses.
Zach then shows up to zap him back to now.
============================
Dean thinks this is another of Zach's tricks.
“The time for tricks is over. Give yourself to Michael. Say yes and we can strike! Before Lucifer gets to Sam, before billions die.”
Dean steps away, thinks....and....”Nah.” Heh.
Zach's pissed now. Dean hasn't learned his lesson and he's ready to teach it again....
*poof* Dean's gone. Hee!
Good old Cas. :D
Dean tells him to never change. Awww.....
He's calling Sam!!!! Eeeeee!!!! Boys!!!!!
It's the trestle! *squee* :D
Dean's leaning against the Impala...waiting.
Sam drives up in....Is that a Caddy? hee!
There's a little trepidation here....especially when Dean pulls out the knife, but he offers it to Sam. “I'm sure you're rusty.” Heh.
Dean admits he was wrong, that maybe they are each other's weakness, but they're all they've got. “More than that...we keep each other human.”
Sam thanks him and says he won't let him down.
Dean says he knows it...”You are the second best hunter on the planet.” Hee!
Sam wants to know what they do now...
Dean: “We make our own future.”
Sam: “Guess we have no choice.”
An epic episode! It had that big, movie-sized look to it and I loved it!
Even though I knew I'd be seeing 2 Deans, when I saw them in that first scene it took my brain a little while to catch up with it all. Too much Jensen I guess. ;) Once I got used to it though, it was wonderful! Like in DALDOM, Jensen made the 2 Deans very different from each other. FutureDean was dark, bitter, broken, a "plow through with the plan & don't worry about the consequences later" kind of guy. Proof of how much Dean changed in 5 years without Sam and with the world falling down around him. Jared did an equally excellent job portraying Lucifer. There wasn't any hint of Sam in his performance at all. It was all the smooth-talking, sympathy-seeking devil. And there's Misha, who I think got a chance to be more himself with FutureCastiel. It was fun seeing him smiling and grinning so much, as many of us have seen him do at conventions.
* I liked how Chuck was like Radar in MASH at the camp - always with a clipboard in hand, handling supplies, and in the know about what was going on.
* There's been much speculation whether the future trip was all Zachariah's creation, but I tend to go with it being true.
* Seeing more of Lucifer convinces me that Dean is right about him. And Dean's got a pretty good track record. He paints himself as a victim, that he was wrongfully punished by God, but like Dean, I'm not buying it. It's all about being conniving and smooth while he's ready to gut you with a knife. I keep thinking about that quote about even the devil being able to quote scripture to suit his own purpose. "I'm misunderstood, I'm good, I'm the victim here", but what is he really up to? It's all a smoke screen and Dean is already seeing through it.
* I wish we'd seen how Lucifer took out FutureDean. Did he see Sam and simply succumb because in the end he couldn't kill his own brother? Or did Lucifer use some powers to disable him?
* For all the talk of people infected with the Croatoan virus we didn't see many of them. One little group and one girl isn't much. Understandably, there wasn't a lot of time to deal with that aspect of the story, but it would've been nice to see a little bit more. Maybe have them more as a visual threat.
* The running/shooting of the zombies scene was so exceptional. 'Course, the filmmaking geek in me wonders how many times they had to run down that street. ;)
* So happy to have the boys together again. There was that tense little moment when Dean pulled out the knife and Sam stepped back ever so slightly. That was interesting & a little heartbreaking. There's still some uneasiness, but I think they're ready to move on and work together as a team again. Yes, I was hoping for a hug. Didn't get it, darn you Kripke! *sigh*
I'm sure there's things I'm forgetting to mention, but I LOVED the episode. Can the boys change the future Dean saw? He went against his future self's wishes and said no to Michael again, but he changed things by rejoining with Sam. Will it be enough? Lucifer told him it wouldn't matter what he did, what he changed, that they'd always end up with the same ending. But one thing about Dean is that he can still surprise everyone. He's seen what not to do, so now it's up to him to avoid that while still holding onto his humanity along with Sam.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)
