Emmys & giving some much needed credit

raloriaI watched the Emmys this evening, something I didn't even really plan on, considering our favorite show was ignored yet again this year. Instead I saw other shows, actors, and directors accept their coveted golden statues. Am I bitter? Maybe a little.
Btw, this doesn't mean that I don't think those other shows weren't deserving....it's just...well, you'll see....
It's just that I've been capping my recording of AHBL, pt 2 all day/evening and I've seen the results of all the hard work of not only Jensen & Jared, but the director Kim Manners, the writers, the cinematographer, the set designer, and so on. It's very likely that they will never receive the acknowledgement that they so richly deserve. Just because they're a Sci-Fi show on a smaller network. Just because they're on a network considered to be only for teenagers. It's a shame that such a fine show will probably go through it's run without ever receiving any prominant awards or recognition. I know, I know...it should be enough that we all know and appreciate the show, but you know...it's just not. The show barely gets any attention from it's own network! It's been up to us, the fans, to spread the word and promote the show.
This isn't the way it should be. I remember the good old days...when ratings could dip and a show still stayed on the air. When hour long shows were just that - almost an hour long, even with commercials. When awards shows were not popularity contests, but about the quality of work done. Okay...grated, Hollywood lives on popularity contests, so that last one probably isn't entirely true.
Back to the Emmys for a moment...Comic Lewis Black gave a brilliant monologue about the state of TV today. Most importantly, he pointed out the terrible decisions being made by TV executives.

Lewis Black, the comedian, skewered network producers for their now-common practices of placing text on-screen to promote coming shows and for squeezing credits off the screen at the end of a show.
“We don’t care about the next show; we’re watching this show,” Mr. Black intoned in his usual screech. He also lambasted the networks for the practice of moving production credits to one side of the screen and running them so fast that even a speed-reader would have difficulty keeping up with them.
“Don’t clutter up the screen so we can’t see who worked on the show we just watched,” Mr. Black said. “They deserve to see their names.”
To applause from the audience, he asked network executives, “What is it you do, except come up with bad ideas?”
I only wish I had recorded the broadcast, because everything he said was true.
So in honor of Supernatural, a show that is worthy of numerous awards and deserves more recognition than it gets, I'd like to do my own recognition. I'm not just talking about the wonderful acting talents of Jensen and Jared, although goodness knows they deserve it. I'm talking about everyone involved in the production of SPN.

Just because they're on a network considered to be only for teenagers. It's a shame that such a fine show will probably go through it's run without ever receiving any prominant awards or recognition. I know, I know...it should be enough that we all know and appreciate the show, but you know...it's just not. The show barely gets any attention from it's own network! It's been up to us, the fans, to spread the word and promote the show.
This isn't the way it should be. I remember the good old days...when ratings could dip and a show still stayed on the air. When hour long shows were just that - almost an hour long, even with commercials. When awards shows were not popularity contests, but about the quality of work done. Okay...grated, Hollywood lives on popularity contests, so that last one probably isn't entirely true.
Back to the Emmys for a moment...Comic Lewis Black gave a brilliant monologue about the state of TV today. Most importantly, he pointed out the terrible decisions being made by TV executives.

Lewis Black, the comedian, skewered network producers for their now-common practices of placing text on-screen to promote coming shows and for squeezing credits off the screen at the end of a show.
“We don’t care about the next show; we’re watching this show,” Mr. Black intoned in his usual screech. He also lambasted the networks for the practice of moving production credits to one side of the screen and running them so fast that even a speed-reader would have difficulty keeping up with them.
“Don’t clutter up the screen so we can’t see who worked on the show we just watched,” Mr. Black said. “They deserve to see their names.”
To applause from the audience, he asked network executives, “What is it you do, except come up with bad ideas?”
I only wish I had recorded the broadcast, because everything he said was true.
So in honor of Supernatural, a show that is worthy of numerous awards and deserves more recognition than it gets, I'd like to do my own recognition. I'm not just talking about the wonderful acting talents of Jensen and Jared, although goodness knows they deserve it. I'm talking about everyone involved in the production of SPN.
