First Impressions: 3.07 Fresh Blood
Nov. 19th, 2007 01:34 amI normally wouldn't post this until I'm done reviewing the previous episode, but I wanted to get this done. So my big review of Red Sky In The Morning will come...later. Hey, we're in a mini hiatus now. I've got some time. ;)
These are just my first impressions of the season's seventh episode. My full-length review with caps will be posted later. This just gives me a chance to express my initial thoughts about the episode and touch on a few highlights.
With each of these First Impressions posts I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

* I was kind of surprised that Bela and Gordon hadn't crossed paths before. But then, he's such a loner...maybe it makes sense after all.
* I almost started to hate Bela in this episode for handing the boys over to Gordon, but she is right. What could she have done with a crazy man pointing a gun at her? But bad form for not letting the boys know. I don't care how busy she was....what does it take to make a quick phone call? Thankfully, she did what was right in the end.
* Dean offering himself up for bait was so....wrong. However, Jensen really sold it. And did anyone else notice that the blood began before he really touched the blade to his arm? Ooops!
* The whole "interrogation of Lucy" scene was awesome! Beautifully filmed and acted! So many close ups! I think this might just be the most beautiful episode Kim Manners has ever directed. The CU shots were everywhere! Every image so visually striking.
* I like the whole arc of that scene with Lucy. It goes from the boys acting like ruthless hunters to more compassionate as they come to understand her situation. The end of the scene was very telling too. Big brother stepping up to do the dirty work as little brother just watches and winces.
* Gordon's even scary as an FBI agent! Eeeep!
* Interesting how they mention the Spider club and show the outside but never the inside. I believe in the sides, the scene where they save the girl from Dixon was supposed to be inside the club. Guess they had to change it for some reason. Oh, and I've seen that gal, too. It's bugging the heck out of me! Anybody know?
* Whoah! Gordon! Run boys! Run!
* I remember reading the fan account of watching this scene in the alley being filmed. Great to see the finished product at last. How Sam got away I don't know, but I really thought that was a dumb move for Dean to leave him. Yeah, Gordon wants Sammy dead...so why would you leave him? And either Kubrick and Gordon are incredibly bad shots (kinda hard to believe) or they just scared Dean off and missed him on purpose to get to Sam.
* Look out Bela. Dean is pissed and you don't wanna joke around with a pissed off Dean.
* Dixon (as usual) is not what I expected, but I found myself liking him. 'Bout time Gordon became the hunted. Nice twist with Gordon being turned into what he hunts.
* Wow! Green wall as a background...with Jensen's green eyes. Yeah, that's just about perfect.
* Dean's sort of surprised that Sam's so willing to kill Gordon now. But again, what are you gonna do? The guy's pretty psychotic and relentless. Putting him in jail didn't work and you're certainly not going to make him listen to reason.
* Interesting how they keep adding to the vampire lore with the sensitivity to sounds and lights.
* The scene with a tearful Dixon was powerful, with him saying all the things Dean is struggling with. On a fangirly note, it was pretty cool how Jensen picked up that knife and held it.
* I wonder if they killed Dixon?
* Okay, so apparently Gordon is not only super strong, but he can enter an RV without making a sound. Poor Kubrick...what a way to go.
* So I guess the boys are going to have shiny new phones now. What is this? New phones each season?
* This part is going to be a little long-winded...so stay with me. Now for the best scene (outside of the ending, of course) of the episode. I love it when we get the brotherly moments...the angsty moments. The boys finally talk about Dean's fate and I'm so glad we didn't have to wait until the end of the season to get all this out. Dean learns he can't keep things from Sam and just how much his little brother has looked up to him all these years. *sniff* Pass the tissues, will you? Yep, I teared up during this scene. Sam finally opening up and not allowing Dean to carry on with his act any longer. Jared really nailed this scene. *is so proud of him* He brought Sam nearly to tears - just barely holding on. The way his voice wavered...jeez, rip my heart out why don't you? And then telling Dean he wants him to act like his brother again...."just 'cause". *cries* Because it's not the Winchester way to just come out and say those things that he really wanted to say: because I miss you, love you. Yeah, great stuff. And then there's Dean...finally getting it. He can't hide this stuff from Sam or from himself. I saw expressions on his face that I haven't seen since that scene in Something Wicked. Gorgeous. Brothers sticking together...until the end. *sniffle* So beautiful. This is why I really love this show.
* I'm thinking that blade that we see Dean and then Sam use in the episode looks an awful lot like the one John had in Dead Man's Blood.
* Interesting how it's Dean who actually tries one last ditch effort to talk some sense into Gordon over the phone with his "you're still a hunter" line.
* The boys should have known that finding the girl like that was far too easy.
* The panic in Dean's "Dammit Sam!" was great. A mere door separating him from his brother, and he can't get through.
* Gordon's laugh is very chilling! *shivers*
* I really like the red eye effect for Gordon's POV. Really eerie and creepy.
* Funny how Sam didn't deny being different, even to Gordon. Maybe he does feel different since he's been brought back from the dead?
* Great fight sequence! Really brutal. Where did Dean come from? Aw, who cares! No! No! No! He's biting Dean! Noooooo!
* Sam killing Gordon is satisfying as the end of a character, but I found myself questioning how he did it. Sure, Sam's strong, and I'm sure adrenaline was pumping and helping, but we're talking muscle and bone, here. I don't think any normal human being could cut off someone's head with barbed wire like that. Maybe Sam's demon blood is starting to kick in? Hmmmm..... Even Sam seemed amazed at the end.
* Wonderful final scene! Again...there was mention of the car having problems in the sides. Would've been nice if they had kept that in, but I guess they figured it wasn't needed. Great to see the boys more relaxed and just bein' guys. Another fangirly note: That shirt really brings out the color in Jensen's eyes (thank you costume department!). *swoons* This is such a touching brotherly moment, as Dean decides Sam needs to know how to fix the car. Awwwwww. Wants to keep passing on that knowledge to his little brother. Yes, I'm blubbering, but the boys are just so comfortable in these roles now. It's great to watch them and know that some of those brotherly feelings are there in real life, too. It makes a scene like this one even more meaningful.
So now we wait 3 weeks until the Christmas eppy. *bounces excitedly* Can't wait to see that one! Sorry I went off on a few tangents here, but I just had to talk about some of these scenes. Just couldn't keep it inside anymore. I love this show! :D
