It's been so long since I've done one of these that I feel kind of rusty at it. lol ;)
These are just my first impressions of this episode. My full-length review with caps will be posted later. This just gives me a chance to express my initial thoughts about the episode and touch on a few highlights.
With each of these First Impressions posts I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

Note: A lot of these early observations were made during the initial airing of the episode. You can tell because the sentences are more incomplete. I've chosen to just keep them that way, even though I did go through and flesh some of them out a little and added a few things. I quit typing out notes at the scene where poor Dean is spitting up blood and got totally distracted by the show from that point on. So after that the notes are more insightful because I took the time to really watch the show again and get my thoughts down.
ewwww.....bloody teeth
suits.....*guh*
and the red tie for dean....*double guh*
ah...the silent head nod signal from Sam
wow.....it's really raining
What's with this attitude about witches from Dean? "Spewing their bodily fluids everywhere." I've never heard of that in relation to witches. Weird.
more ewwww....that's one disgusting chicken...
and one ugly burger....gross!
whoah....bye Amanda
"That's a curveball".....hee dean
whoah! dead rabbit! "Freakin' witches! Seriously, man! C'mon!" Heehee!
and dean feels sorry for it..."Poor little guy." awwww
Thought I'd point out here that in the sides, it's Dean that first mentions that they're dealing with a coven and not Sam.
lol....now sam's wearing a red tie...maybe that's why he gets to do the introductions this time...isn't that a first?
Detectives Bachman & Turner *gigglesnort*
oh yeah....nothing suspicious about those gals...riiiiiight
oooh......."they're human sam" "they're murderers"
dean meets ruby!!! and points the Colt at her...heh
just a little brother disagreement there over the gun....hmmmm
I love Jensen's delivery of "They want us dead, we want them dead!".
Nice use of a mirror again. :)
I like how Dean's question to Sam of "Are you feeling okay?" sounds more like just asking if he's physically feeling alright rather than what Sam takes it to be, which is about his changing attitude towards killing. As we find out, Dean is not feeling well and he probably thinks they ate something bad, but since Sam goes with the question, he pursues that instead.
I like the motel room. Cool coloring with all the orange and the metal bars.
--------------------------------------------------------
This little argument about how Sam's attitude has changed sort of mirrors the one they had in Croatoan, but with the roles reversed. Then it was Sam saying Dean had changed and was eager to kill people and now it's Dean pointing out that behavior about Sam.
Take this dialog from the scene in Croatoan:
DEAN
Hey look, man, I'm not happy about this, okay? But it's a tough job and you know that.
SAM
It's supposed to be tough, Dean. We're supposed to struggle with this, that's the whole point.
DEAN
What does that buy us?
SAM
A clear conscience, for one!
DEAN
Well, it's too late for that.
SAM
(stopping him again)
What the hell's happened to you?
DEAN
What?
SAM
You might kill an innocent man, and you don't even care! You don't act like yourself anymore, Dean. Hell, you know what? You're acting like one of those things out there.
Now, check out their conversation from this episode:
Sam: Look, we have to start looking at the big picture Dean. Start thinking in strategies and moves ahead. It's not so simple we're not just hunting anymore. We're at war.
Dean: Are you feeling okay?
Sam: Ugh...Why are you always asking me that?
Dean: Because you're taking advice from a demon for starters. And by the way you seem less and less worried about offing people. You know, it used to eat you up inside.
Sam: Yeah, and what has that gotten me?
Dean: Nothing. But it's just what you're supposed to do. Okay? We're supposed to drive in the friggin' car and friggin' argue about this stuff. You know you go on about the sanctity of life and all that crap.
Sam: Wait. You're mad because I'm starting to agree with you?
Dean: No! I'm not mad..I'm...I'm worried...Sam. I'm worried 'cause you're not acting like yourself.
Interesting coincidence that Croatoan was the 9th episode of Season 2.
--------------------------------------------------------
Eeep! *cries* Sam admitting that he has to change into Dean is just heartbreaking.
Oh god....dean's in pain....help him sam....help him!!!!!
This scene totally made me cry the first 10 times I watched it. It's still difficult to watch, with Sam doing the only thing he can - to go after the coven and leave his poor brother bleeding on the floor!
You'll notice that Sam only cuts open one bed - the one by the door. Meaning that was Dean's bed even though Sam was sitting on it.
Okay, I honestly thought we were going to see more of "Dark Side" Sammy in these scenes with the coven. It's just my take on the scene, but he just doesn't seem angry enough to me. His brother's dying and I just couldn't feel the anger from Sam that was so evident in the sides. So for me, I was a little disappointed. Not a lot....just a little.
Oh man! Poor Dean! Then Ruby comes in and pours that awful colored stuff in his mouth. Ugh. Kudos to Jensen for what had to be a disgusting and uncomfortable scene to do.
Again, I just don't see the darkness I was expecting from Sam. I was hoping for that look he had in Sin City when he killed the Father and Casey.
Love the "We were just trying to get Renee a lower mortgage rate." line! LOL Only SPN would have a highly charged scene broken up with a bit of humor like that.
"What was that stuff? God, it was ass. It tasted like ass." LOL!
"Let. My brother. Go." Now that's more like it. That's the darkness I like to see. Heh.
"What's wrong? Couldn't find my hex bag?" I didn't make the connection at first, but after thinking about it I wondered why Tammi used the hex bags. She's a demon and she certainly didn't need them to kill. Then I realized that they must have been used to lure the Wiinchester boys in. That's also why Sam couldn't find a hex bag in the motel room for Dean, because she knew they were already onto the coven.
That was a cool effect with Tammi stopping the bullet. Scary, too! Great, now they can't even rely on the Colt to kill demons!
I really like this demon! The attitude is great! Kudos to the actress for a very good performance.
Tammi mentions a new leader, but doesn't mention his name.
How is she killing Sam anyway? Just pressing him into the wall?
LOL! Dean's "look" after Ruby tells Tammi "I've wanted you for so long." Heehee!
Again, there's some subtle differences in the sides for this fight, probably because of time and budget. In the sides, the two of them actually hiss at each other and also appear to move very fast. Sam is also not pinned to the wall, but held in mid-air and at one point is unable to speak.
So Ruby was once a human...and a witch. Good to get more backstory on her at last.
Another big change in the sides: Dean kills Tammi in the episode, but in the sides, it's Sam who stabs her repeatedly. I wonder why they decided to change it? Maybe they thought Sam killing her like that would make him appear too darkside, too soon?
I love how Dean goes right to big brother mode and gets Sam out of there. How he helps his weakened little brother to his feet and pushes him towards the door when Ruby tells them to leave. Awwwww....
The final scene between Dean and Ruby is really one of the best of the episode. Curious though why Dean doesn't go running back to the room to check on Sam....unless he just had a feeling it was Ruby anyway.
We finally learn some SPN demon mythology here. That all demons were once human. They get sent to hell and forget that they were once human. Not a good prospect for Dean. He's going to become something he hunts. Parallels to Tess's line in IMTOD, anyone? Eeep. Ruby also confirms (or does she? heh) that there's no hope of saving Dean from this deal. She also wants Dean to help her get Sam ready...to be more like him...and to fight this war on his own. But did I see a glimmer of hope in the fact that Ruby says she remembers being human? Hmmm....maybe. Otherwise, things look mighty grim for Dean.
In a nutshell, this episode was good. Slightly disappointing where Sam was concerned, but good. I also thought the first half was a little slow, but I suspect that will improve with repeated viewings. I'll be honest and say I was really too spoiled for this episode. Kinda ruined it for me. But that's my own issues. I just can't say no to spoilers! Hee! ;)
