I've been meaning to make this post for *gulp* months, but with SPN returning with new episodes this week, now is the time.

Ever since the start of the season, my brain has been working on various theories and ideas about the characters and plots. Gathering info. from interviews with Kripke, spoilers, script sides, and the episodes themselves, numerous theories have been found and discarded over the past several months.

Now that we're down to the last 4 episodes and Dean's days to the deadline with hell are numbered...a stronger theory has emerged. But first, a quick character round-up.

Bela: I like her. I think she's a great foil for the brothers, but I'm disappointed that we haven't learned more about her. Who in her family did she kill that made her see the ghost ship in "Red Sky At Morning"? Why did she steal the Colt? I hope we'll get the answers to these questions before the season is over, because Kripke has indicated that she may not be back for Season 4. It's kind of a shame that the character never really worked out and wasn't accepted more by the fans. I really liked her chemistry with Dean. It was volatile and charged, especially in that first showdown in "Bad Day At Black Rock". And I've gotta give her points for probably being the only female to convince Dean to get into a tux. *guh*

Ruby: I like her, too. We've learned a lot about her over the season (or have we?....hmmmmm). A lot of my theories have revolved around her and still do, as you'll see below. She's quite a concoction. A demon who is seemingly helping the boys. Her motives are still veiled and hidden, but I get the feeling that we'll learn more about her too in the coming episodes. Did she tell Dean the truth about what happens to humans down in hell? Does she really want to help Sam fight this demon war alone?

Sam: The youngest Winchester has been singularly pursuing a solution to Dean's demon deal. Working with Bobby, working on his own, at times getting frustrated and giving up, but he's still desperate for an answer. Meanwhile, the visions he had before have stopped and been replaced at times with a tinge of darkness that has him shooting first and not asking any questions about his actions later. Is this the "not 100% Sam" that the YED hinted at? He was supposed to lead the demon army and now has his competition, Lilith, on this tail. He summoned Jeremy's dad after taking the dream root in "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" and cut off Gordon's head in "Fresh Blood" with only a coil of barbed wire and his bare hands. Is this Sam being smart and on an adrenaline rush, or Sam's demonic powers (due to the demon blood given to him by the YED as a baby) coming to the forefront at last?

Dean: With his deal with the demon, he's proven that he'll do anything to save his brother. He made light of his impending doom at first, living it up and trying to enjoy the time he had left. But Sam was smart enough to recognize that Dean was just hiding his fear behind all that bravado and got his brother to finally admit that he doesn't want to die and go to hell. So far, no solution, or even a hint of one has been found. Is Dean doomed to burn in the fires of hell?

My Theories/Speculation:

How do I think the end of the season will play out? I'm notoriously bad at trying to outguess Kripke & Co. Doesn't mean my brain won't stop trying to figure it all out, though. So far, this is what I've come up with....

I'll say it right now...Dean is going to hell. The entire season has been building to it and to not finally take that final step would be a big letdown, IMO. They've made it nearly impossible to save his life, so why pull a miracle out of the air at the end? The timing really couldn't be better. It's the end of the season and they've already been picked up for S4. So at the end of 3.16, Dean dies, goes to hell and during the summer hiatus he's down there for as long as Kripke and the writers want. Sam's on his own, but the show won't be on the air, so there's no problem of one of the main leads not being on the screen. The show returns in the fall...we see a distraught and changed Sam (probably very much like we saw in "Mystery Spot"). He finds a way to bring Dean back.

Kripke's said there's no way they can have Dean in hell because there's no way to do it on their limited budget. I happen to disagree. I know from experience that limited time and budget breeds creativity. It doesn't mean you can't do everything, just that you have to find other ways to work around the situation. The way I see it, they can film a bit of hell. Use the right lighting on the right set, some interesting camera work and I can totally see them pulling it off. We don't need to see hell in vivid detail. The audience can fill in their own idea of what hell is and it can turn out to be even better than if they're shown the whole thing. Sound and some fancy cinematography and lighting can go a long way.

Sam brings Dean back from the mouth of hell and the first part of Season 4 is spent partly with Dean's recovery. You just know Dean won't come out of those fires unscathed. It's going to effect him...the question is how much and to what degree? This is another reason why Dean is going to hell...it will be a great way to further build upon Dean as a character (and Sam for that matter). He's gone through a lot since the Pilot. He's also cheated death more times than can possibly be healthy. That luck can't hold much longer, even for a great hero like Dean. So it's time to take that final step and kill him off. Bring him back, of course, but leave him damaged and trying to find his way back to the Dean he was before. Drama for Dean and drama for Sam....nothing can be better for character development and ultimately, the show. You've got to keep upping the ante each season, and sending Dean to hell would be a great way to do that for SPN.

We know someone holds Dean's contract, but who is it? My theory? It's Ruby. I think there's a lot going on with her character that we haven't learned yet. She's been helping the boys (saving their lives, fixing the Colt), but why? She's also given Dean a lot of information about demons and how all of them were once human before going to hell. But remember...demons lie. If we're still holding to that theory, how can we possibly believe what Ruby is saying/doing? Kripke said she was supposed to be an antagonist for the boys. I haven't really seen that happening. So why would Ruby be the one to hold Dean's contract? I figure she's tied to the YED somehow. Maybe she's one of his children and she's enacting revenge for the death of her sister and brother (Meg & the guy in the alley in "Devil's Trap"). She's helping the boys because she has to keep Dean alive so he can end up in hell once his year is up. She's also preparing Sam to lead the demon army, which was the YED's big plan. So she helps the guys, but her true colors will be shown in the end and she'll end up with Dean's soul. Btw, the one flaw in this theory (and the only one I know of right now) is that in "Bedtime Stories" when Sam confronts the Crossroads Demon, she states that a male holds Dean's contract. Whether that's true or not, who knows?

What about Sam? Kripke said way back at the beginning of the season, that at the end we'd see that Sam's demon arc and Dean's deal would intersect in an interesting way. I've never forgotten that and I can see the show still leaning in that direction for the finale. My speculation is that Sam will be either forced to lead the demon army to try and save Dean or (& I think this is more likely) he will turn darkside after Dean dies. We've already been shown what happens to Sam after the death of his brother in "Mystery Spot". I think it's only natural that Dean's death would push Sam over the edge and make him finally show his demonic side. Question is...does he have enough power to take out Lilith? Or does she take him out? It seems there's two sides to this demon war. The YED's minions and those now following Lilith. If Sam takes up the leadership role to lead the demons, will he be able to stop Lilith and her side? Is this what the demon war in Season 4 is going to be like? Hmmm.....clearly there's more thinking to be done. ;)

So there you have it. My thoughts on this whole Sammy-going-darkside-Dean's-demon-deal-coming-due thing. Hope you enjoyed the rambling. When I get going it's hard to stop me. My brain's been working overtime trying to figure this whole thing out, but the truth is I don't have a clue how it's going to end. Only the evil genius that is Kripke knows for sure and he enjoys throwing in last minute twists that we never see coming. Word is that we're getting one doozy of a cliffhanger this season. This has me nervous and excited at the same time. It was a relief to have a clean ending last season, with the YED's death. No worrying about the fate of the boys all summer. Looks like we're in for another stressful hiatus this time around. Eeep!

In a nutshell....I think Dean will go to hell. It'll be great for the character and great for the show. Do I want him to go? Yes and no. It's exciting from a plot standpoint, but frightening for the character. *clutches Dean*

So what do you think? Will Dean go to hell? Should Dean go to hell? How does Ruby and Bela fit into the whole thing? How big a threat is Lilith? Speak your mind in the comments. :)
