First Impressions: 3.14 Long Distance Call

raloriaThese are just my first impressions of this episode. My full-length review with caps will be posted later. This just gives me a chance to express my initial thoughts about the episode and touch on a few highlights.
With each of these First Impressions posts I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.

Please keep in mind that these notes were initially taken during the airing of the episode and are very fragmented. I've tried my best to go back through them and fill out some thoughts and ideas, but most will be left "as is". Note: "++++++++++" signifies a commercial break.

Just a note here....my first thought seeing her look all annoyed at him was "What is wrong with you???" Then my second thought was that if it had been me I totally would have grabbed him by the lapels, turned him around, and given him the kiss of his life! Whoo-hoo! :D

I realized in the second viewing that Dean had no idea what Sam found out because he never got that call...it was the Crocotta talking to Sam on the phone.
Oooh....he sent that guy home to kill Dean/for Dean to kill him!!! Nooo....Dean!
Oh man....total smackdown!
Wow....two separate fights....awesome!
Whoah....Dean taking the guy's gun and emptying the cartridge and throwing the gun away all in one cool, one-handed move? That was soooo HOT! *fans self again*
Dean....that exorcism's not going to work...
Yay! Sammy!
Oh, Dean....*pets*.....more lost and confused than ever...."I don't know."

Dean's scared...wow....actually admitting it now....Sam's getting teary-eyed...and so is Dean.....meep.
Heh...Dean giving Sam a tough time again about the “and me” bit...aw, boys.
TV and beer...it fixes everything when you're a Winchester...for now anyway.
I really liked this episode (I know, big surprise, right?). It seems like a lot of people didn't care for it too much and the low ratings kind of reflected that. It's kind of sad, really. Here we wait 2 months for new episodes and the first two of 4 new episodes get lackluster responses. *sigh*
Anyway...I loved the growing tension between the brothers. I think this is going to continue to escalate up to the finale. I saw this coming just from reading the sides many weeks ago. The boys are fighting and splitting up more. It's an interesting turn of events, but understandable. Dean's time is almost up and they're both grasping for a solution. Dean is getting more and more desperate, causing him to try anything to save himself and for once, Sam is acting as the more level-headed sibling and being cautious. As usual, splitting up results in trouble for each of them. You'd think they'd learn by now that that's not a good course of action. But I loved the 3 big scenes between the two of them. The first scene when Dean reveals that Ruby said she couldn't save him, the big motel room scene as Sam leaves Dean waiting for a call from "Dad", and the final scene with the brothers finally coming together once again and Dean admitting his fear for the first time. Jensen and Jared brought out some explosive performances and emotions in these scenes and it was so enjoyable to watch.
I re-read the sides for this episode and there's quite a few changes. When Sam visits the house, he's not wearing a suit and the girl's name is Leila. There's also a scene where Sam's with Leila on the computer in her room and it's there that he figures out it's a Crocotta as he chats online with her "mom". Then in the phone conversation in the car with Dean, Sam says "It's a Crocotta, Dean! I asked if it's eyes turned to stone when it died and it freaked out!". That scene was probably dropped because of the budget and time constraints. In the episode we really didn't get the usual lengthy explanation about the Crocotta. They just gave it a brief mention and then Sam was off to confront it at the phone company.
I can't wait for these last two episodes. The stakes just keep getting higher and I'm getting more and more excited/nervous about the finale!
