With western WA experiencing warm, sunny weather at last, my Mom & I went for a drive last Saturday. It was a beautiful day, with lots of sunshine and highs in the 80s. Of course, it being the first summer-like day in the area meant everyone else was out enjoying the weather, too. We got a late start out of the house, but were still able to enjoy much of the afternoon.
I'm splitting this post into 2 parts since there's so many pics.
We fueled up the car, seeing an old red Impala as we left the gas station. It wasn't the same year as the one on SPN...I'd say it was from '65 or '66. Air conditioning keeping us cool, we headed off to our old haunt, Point Defiance Park in Tacoma. We enjoyed the long, leisurely drive there, made our way down to Ruston Way along the water of Puget Sound, and I promptly took the wrong street and got us temporarily lost. Btw, this was just the first of several missed turns by me this day. We ended up driving through various residential areas before arriving at a very busy Point Defiance Park.
There were tons of people out and about, enjoying the summer weather. This meant finding a parking place was going to be a challenge. We passed the gardens (always a favorite for us) and were dismayed to see it with nary a flower in bloom. We drove on, heading for the Five Mile Drive, encountering lots of slow drivers. The worst was at Owen Beach, where there was a huge back up on the road from the parking lot. We would later learn there was a Kayak event taking place there. Once we got past that the driving got easier. We stopped at a familiar viewpoint and enjoyed the warm but strong breeze coming off the Sound.
After a few missed turns and getting in the back-up for Owen Beach a second time, we wound our way back to the entrance of the park and spotted some irises blooming near the gardens. We parked and I decided to explore the garden area for any flowers.
So here are my photos from the gardens at Point Defiance Park.
Lots of Irises in the little Iris garden...

I found some beautiful and fragrant Wisteria blooming in the main garden.

Three of them!

The smell was lovely on such a warm day.

A large Euphorbia.

A close up of the blossoms.

I don't recall what these spring flowers are called. Very pretty though.

This is the only rose bloom I could find in the entire Rose Garden.

The rhododendrons were blooming everywhere. I really like the color of this one.

A close up shot. I really like how the sun is hitting it here.

I love this pink rhody next to the purple azalea.

This rhododendron is the same color as the one in our front yard.

I spotted a circle of azaleas up in some scrub brush up on a hill. Most of them were almost finished blooming, but the colors were very pretty.

This close up turned out nice.

I walked back down to that pink rhody and got a nice close up.

We left the park after that and decided to head down to the water. My next post will have photos from that part of our drive. :)
