Photos from Saturday, May 17th - Part Two
May. 21st, 2008 05:44 pmThis is the continuation of the drive my Mom & took last Saturday.
We left Point Defiance Park and headed back down to the beach and Ruston Way. The place was packed, with tons of people walking along the shoreline and every parking lot full.
So we decided to head to a more hidden beach park that we discovered recently. Maybe the crowds would be smaller there. We drove further north to Dash Point Park. There were quite a few people there, but at least we found a spot in the front row to park. We people watched with the windows rolled down to enjoy the now cooler breeze and watched a few boats go by. I then got out and took a few quick photos before we moved on.
Some boats out on the water and people enjoying the waves coming in on the beach. Actually, the one boat is pulling that other one.

People out on the pier fishing or just walking.

People on the beach at Dash Point Park.

The sun was heading down at this point, so we headed closer to home and the Des Moines Beach Park. It's another little park right down by the water that we found last year. We arrived just in time to catch a very pretty sunset.
I really like these first two shots with the couple sitting on the bench.

It really makes for a nice composition.

The beach and some houses along the shoreline looking north.

The long pier to the south.

Those are the Olympic Mountains in the distance.

There's this lone, long-needled pine tree in this part of the park and I used it to help frame my shots. These kids decided to go down to the water's edge and throw some rocks into the Sound and they helped a lot with the composition, too.

Without the tree this shot wouldn't be half as interesting.

I step on the other side of the tree as the boys gather their arsenal of rocks.

One of my favorites. Love the color on the water.

A little closer, but I almost lost the tree on this one.

The sunset's getting darker here.

Another favorite with the last bit of color in the clouds.

More a shot of the beach than anything else, with what little light that was left, the boys, and the Olympics in the distance.

I then returned to the car and we watched various boats heading into the Marina on the other side of the pier. We also watched as a row-boat full of people headed out into the Sound. Now I don't know anything about boating, but I do have enough common sense to know that heading out in an un-motorized boat at sunset and going way out into Puget Sound is probably not a very wise idea. But they were waaaaaay out there. After a while we could barely see them even with the binoculars we'd brought along. At one point we saw a small motorboat go out to them, but after several moments it headed back to the marina without them. We decided they were clearly idiots that didn't know what they were doing. However, I didn't see anything about lost boaters on the news later on, so I guess they made it across the Sound okay. Still...doing something like that just seems stupid to me. It got dark pretty fast and they were out there, no light, no motor....you gotta wonder if they even had any life-vests on. Idiots.
Anyway, by this time it was after 9:00 (ah...long days...I just love this time of year!). So we headed out to pick up some supper to take home. By now the temperature was just perfect. I like warm weather as long as it doesn't get too hot. This day was close to being a little too warm for my tastes. But as we got home it was perfect - in the 70s with a nice breeze. We pulled into the driveway as Bon Jovi's "Dead Or Alive" started playing on the radio! I kid you not! It was an amazing way to end a fun afternoon.
