First of all, sorry for this being so utterly late. *sigh* I watched the ep late on Thursday night (online), but I thought I'd get my DL on Friday and do my review after a 2nd quick rewatch, right? Wrong! Couldn't get the episode until late Sunday! WTH??? Terrible! Second, I'll try to keep this pretty short.
We pick up right where we left off with Dean & Ketch jumping into Apocalypse World, but...it's not the same location the boys were before. We've got trees and snow. Btw, WTH is with people asking if all that snow was real? Uh...of course it was real! 1) Way too much snow to be fake. 2) It is actually snowing in some shots. 3) They film up in Vancouver, in the winter time, where it does in fact snow sometimes! *sigh*
Anyway, I really liked their scenes together. I get that Dean doesn't really trust Ketch, even less than I do at this point. However, I'm more and more sure that Ketch is truly searching for redemption here. So far all his actions this season have been to help the boys and he's continuing to do that. So here's hoping. Of course, the other part of me feels like Ketch didn't need to be brought back at all. I'm really hoping he'll have a very important part to play by the end of the season...otherwise just what was the point of his return? I guess what I'm saying is that I don't want Ketch to be just one of those characters they decided to bring back this season just because they could. There has to be a reason.
Loved Dean getting shot (and in the right shoulder! that's a first!) and then being his typical stubborn self and just trying to power on. I'm glad Ketch was there to take care of the wound (where was the blood anyway?), but part of me kinda wish it had been Sam doing the care and comforting. But yeah, hurt/comfort needs were definitely met in this episode! :D
CHARLIE!!!!! Totally didn't see that coming. Sadly I was spoiled for her return before I watched the ep...on Instagram of all places! How does that happen??? *sigh* But of course this is AU!Charlie and not really like the sweet but strong Charlie we all knew and loved. This Charlie is just as ballsy though. And I totally understand her not wanting to go through the rift at the end. This world is her home and she's not Dean's Charlie - but I understand why it was hard for him to let her go. Hopefully we'll see AU!Charlie again before the end of the season.
GABRIEL!!!! Glad he's back....thought not totally mentally back in fighting form. So I get how he tricked Lucifer into killing another fake version of himself. That makes sense. But how on earth did Asmodeous actually capture him? They didn't explain that. And if Gabriel is strong enough to destroy Asmodeous why didn't that happen way back then? Grrrr. Plot holes! They bug me. And I get how he doesn't want to help Cas and the boys, it is Gabriel's way. Stay away from trouble. Sam and Cas tried to talk him into staying, but since Dean wasn't there Gabe slipped away pretty easily. 'Cause I'm sure that if Dean had been there he would have totally given Gabriel a good talking to like he did in "Hammer Of The Gods" which spurred Gabe into action against his big brother. Hopefully this will still happen in a later episode.
Didn't see Asmodeous getting killed before the season finale. So much for everyone's ideas that he was the big bad this season and would have a big part to play. So who is going to run Hell now?
Almost forgot to talk about Lucifer and Jo. Btw, still loving seeing Danneel on the show. She truly is beautiful and I think she's doing a great job. I do find myself tiring of Lucifer's storyline though. Bleh, bleh, bleh....my dad's propaganda is holding me back, nobody loves me. Whine, whine, whine! I'm over it. I'm glad Jo pointed it all out to him, too. Some are surprised that Lucifer didn't kill her, but he obviously has feelings for her and they bonded pretty fast. And I really think he respects that she's not only not afraid of him, but will call him out over the truth. But honestly...I wish they'd just kill Lucifer off already. Time to move on show!
Wow! That explosive final scene with Dean yelling out his frustration was amazing. Jensen killed it! Props to Jared and Misha for their emotional acting in that scene as well.
Did I say this would be short? Heh...sorry! :P
Final Thoughts:
I did like the episode, despite knowing the writers and their sometimes iffy track record. This script was...fairly okay.
I did have some issues: Why kill the resistance fighters on the bridge? It seemed like it was purposely so Dean would see Charlie. So...poorly set up. And then when that angel gives up on interrogating Charlie they don't kill her until the next morning??? Why? And suddenly smiting her wasn't possible? They had a big dude with a scimitar to chop her head off??? C'mon! Unless they were going with the Sheriff of Nottingham reasoning - "Because. It's dull you twit, it'll hurt more." But I don't know...it just seemed silly and an easy set up so Ketch & Dean would see it and stop the execution.
Overall, I'll give this episode a B.
Can't wait to see what happens next! :D
Quotes:
Ketch: Well, this is quite the vacation spot, isn't it?
Dean: Yeah. If you had your heart set on Mai Tais, well... sorry.
Castiel: It's his story. It starts with his death. Or... what appeared to be his death. 'Per usual, my brother had double my brawn and half my brains. He assumed the counterfeit was what vanished that night, and he thought that he'd stabbed the real thing. The truth is, the thing Luci skewered was a fake. There are plenty of fakes to go around. Everyone believed Gabriel was gone. And suddenly, I was free. No obligation to God or Heaven, or mankind. And so I did what anyone would do -- I moved to Monte Carlo and shacked up with porn stars.' Well, y-- He goes on and on for a while about porn stars and, uh...
Sam: Cas. Please.
Castiel: Okay, so Gabriel was captured, delivered to Asmodeus. 'For years I knew nothing but endless torture. Asmodeus, once the weakest of Hell's princes, grew strong by feeding on my grace.' Well, obviously, his intellect is still intact.
Ketch: Well, if -- if the antidote isn't administered, then the victim dies a particularly gruesome death.
Dean: You guys are such dicks.
Ketch: Yes. Well... guilty. Now then... this will smart.
Sam: Gabriel, you have to dig yourself out of this hole. Look, I know you think it's safer inside. No more torture. No more pain. No more expectations. I've been there. You were nothing like your family. You sure as hell weren't like your dad. Me either. And just like you, I got out. or I-I thought I got out. But then... then my family needed me. And this is my life. No matter how many times I try to fight it, this is what I was put here to do. This is how I make the world a better place. And sure, yeah, hookers and Monte Carlo sounds great, but your family needs you. Jack, your nephew, needs you. The world needs you. We need you. Gabriel, I need you. So, please, help us.
Gabriel: Porn stars. They were porn stars, Sam.
Dean: Charlie was like family. She was a sister to me. She did more for me and Sam than I could even say. And she was... she was butchered. And we couldn't get there in time and I...
Ketch: You feel you failed her.
Dean: I know I did.
Ketch: That, I understand.
Dean: Uh, hello. What about your story you're not telling me?
Ketch: Oh, I've had many failures... friends and colleagues who have died on my watch. Only difference is, I didn't... try to save them. 'Duty' and all that rubbish.
Dean: Well, you do suck.
Ketch: What the hell? Perhaps rescuing this Charlie will wash some of the stain off my hands.
Dean: 'Impossible and stupid,' huh? You say that like it's a bad thing. Come on.
Lucifer: Wow. They would never treat my old man that way. Ever. If He said 'Scour the Earth,' they'd say, 'S.O.S. or Brillo?'
Jo: So you're just giving up?
Lucifer: No. No, I'm gonna refocus. I've come to realize the key to finding my bliss is fatherhood.
Jo: You?
Lucifer: Yeah. It's obvious, right? I just... I devote myself to finding Jack. We're gonna combine our powers. I'll remake the world in my image, with pathetic little people who worship me. Me. Me Love that plan. Awesome plan.
Jo: So you know. It's not the humans. It's not the angels. It's not your father's propaganda that's killing you. It's your complete failure. You say you want to find your son, you don't. Not really. So you sit there because you're afraid, afraid of him. Afraid of looking into his eyes and seeing nothing but contempt. You can't replace your father, you can't create anything. You have nothing. You might as well go back to the Cage... And now you don't have me.
Charlie: So to recap, there's another world, a better world, no Michael. And it has another me?
Dean: Well, had.
Charlie: And you were friends with her? Me? Her?
Dean: Yes. Very.
Charlie: How very?
Dean: Well, she was into chicks.
Charlie: Oh. I like her.
Sam: Welcome to the team.
Gabriel: Uh... yeah. Not so much. I mean, thank you for the rescue and the redemption arc. But, uh, I'm not really a team guy, so... I'm gonna bounce, okay? Um, but, you know, it's been, um... what's the opposite of fun? That.
Sam: No, Gabriel, don't -- you -- can't just walk away. If Michael comes here he will end this world.
Gabriel: And the last time the world was ending, I put my money on you. I think you can pull it off again.
Castiel: No. You cannot turn your back on your Father's creation.
Gabriel: Castiel... My Father turned His back on His creation. Guess it just runs in the family.
Dean: If we can't open the door, then I should have never come back! Son of a bitch! Every time! Every time we get close, it always falls apart. Every freakin' time.
Castiel: Dean... we will find Gabriel. We will.
Dean: We better.
