SPN Revealed S2 - 2.01 In My Time Of Dying

Think you know every SPN episode inside and out? So did I, but a new HDTV with a great picture and sound changed all that. I started to see things that I'd never noticed before. After a while I decided to make a list of all the things big and small that I came across, episode by episode.
I'd like to think of this as an in-depth look into Supernatural. It's a collection of interesting observations, continuity errors, goofs, filmmaking techniques, statistics, important (or not so important) information, trivia, and anything else that struck me as unusual.

Get Involved: I'm always open to continuity errors, etc. spotted by others. If you see something that I don't have in a post, drop me a comment in the post or a PM, and I'll look into it. If I can confirm it and include it in that episode's post, I'll give you credit for the find.
For this reason, these posts will occasionally be updated. I'll post about the changes when they occur.
All the caps in these posts are my own. While most of these will not be suitable for other uses, due to my cropping and highlighting, you're free to take any that you like. All I ask is that you give me credit for them. Thanks! :D
~~~ 2.01 "In My Time Of Dying" ~~~
Episode Continuity Errors: Much like "Asylum" & "Scarecrow" before them, there's some distinct differences between the end of "Devil's Trap" and the beginning of "IMTOD".
This is the truck driver at the end of "Devil's Trap" in S1.
This is the truck driver in "IMTOD".
The blood pattern on Dean's face and his wounds also change between the two episodes.
This is Dean in "Devil's Trap".
Dean in "IMTOD". You'll even notice that here his head is resting much lower against the door than it was in DT.
Continuity Error: Right after the demon rips off the car door, Sam lifts his head, but in the next CU he has his head still resting back against the seat. When we return to the camera angle that the door was shown being removed, his head is back up again.
Sam with he head down before the demon rips off the door.
Sam raises his head after the demon removes the door.
Cut to Sam's CU and his head's back down again.
Back to the other angle, and his head is raised.
Is Jensen ambidextrous? He snaps fingers with his left hand at the nurse (and has done this in other episodes, too....like in DALDOM from S3).
Bobby got a quick haircut and his beard trimmed in the couple of days since the boys left his place after Meg's exorcism in "Devil's Trap".
Dean is right outside the Chapel doorway when the Reaper passes him (it actually comes from there).
You can see the cuts on Dean's torso from where the YED attacked him. Ouch!
There's some great steadicam shots in this episode, including this nearly 180 degree shot after Dean is brought back from cardiac arrest. You can also see in this shot that Dean's room number is 3751.
It's the little things that count: I love the attention to detail in their makeup. Lots of tiny cuts in odd places, very realistic.
All these cuts on Sam & Dean's hands in the ouija board scene.
And when Dean first hears Tessa yelling, you can see the thread from the stitched cut on his forehead.
Trivia: This is fairly well known but in this scene between Dean & Tessa talking you can hear “Dr. Kripke, code blue” over the intercom.
Ooops!: When Dean rushes into the dying girls room, Jensen's arm brushes up against the one nurse's sleeve. This was mentioned in the DVD commentary.
In the ouija board scene you can see how dirty the bottom of Jensen's feet are.
Continuity Error: Slight variation in Dean's hand placement from when Sam leaves the room to get John to when he returns with the journal. Plus, when Sam leaves, the lights were on in Dean's room, but when he returns they're off. The blinds are also closed before he leaves and open when Sam returns.
Also, in the scene of Sam sitting on the bed and looking through the journal, you can see the body double in the bed in place of Jensen who is standing near the window.
The journal page makes no sense whatsoever! It certainly doesn't say anything about reapers altering human perception as Dean states to Tessa.
Here's the text, from what I could make out with a lot of zooming in on the image. I've put in @ when I couldn't make out the letters.
REAPERS
REAPERS-MOT 'Death', Son of 'El, According to instructions given by the God Hadad (B@@@@) to his messengers, lives in a city named hmry (imrey) a pit is his throne and filth is the land of here heritage but BNV warns them that you not come near to divine death, lest he made you like a lamb in his mouth, Gond) you both be gorried away like a rod in the brealm of his windpipe. Hadad seems to be urging that mot c@me to his feast and submit himself to hadad. Death sends back a message that his appetite is that of a lions @@@@@@@@@@ the longing of dolphins in the sea and he ------ threatens to devour Badl him self. In a subsequent r@ssag@ death seemingly makes good his (the word here could be threat) or at least is decieved into believing he has slain balal.
Numerous gaps in the text make this @@@@@ portion of the tale obscure. Then B@@@ H.@dad's sister, the warrior goddess @@@@@@ upon mot severs(?) him, splits @@@@@ a blade, winnoes him in a @@@@@@@ in a fire, grinds him....
When Dean goes to confront Tessa, he passes a directory sign on the wall that says he's on the 4th floor. Tessa is also in room 4747.
You can still see the blood and bullethole in John's jeans, although no mention of his bullet wound is made in the episode.
In John's first scene with the YED, you can hear the sound effect of the Colt's hammer being cocked back, but when John raises the gun, it is not cocked to fire at all. You even hear him retract the hammer when he lowers his arm.
Date Error: There's two very different dates on the monitors for Dean and John.
Dean's monitor with August 12, 2006.
John's monitor in the final scene with July 19, 2006.
Hope you enjoyed this revealing look at "In My Time Of Dying".
Beware! This post is image heavy.
A few important notes... Over the run of the S1 SPN Revealed posts, I was asked how I'm so good at spotting continuity errors and other little happenings in the episodes. The simple answer is that I'm a Script Supervisor (also known as Continuity in England). I've only worked on a few college student films and an independent film, but I know the job well. The Script Supervisor does a lot, but the basic job description is to keep track of continuity during filming, everything from hair & make-up, to props and lighting. On the set, you have to catch everything you can - quickly. The difference with doing this to SPN episodes is that I can take my time, back up the video countless times, and even look frame by frame. I don't hunt down these instances to be critical of the SPN crew. I know even from my limited experience how hard they work every week and I have the utmost respect for them. But it's interesting what little mistakes get by even a professional crew. It's also interesting to continue to find new elements to these episodes that many of us have seen dozens of times. |
