Thoughts on Fringe
Sep. 9th, 2008 11:26 pmI watched JJ Abrams's latest TV venture, Fringe, this evening. I really didn't know too much about the show going in, but I was slightly intrigued and needed a diversion for the evening, so I watched.
Overall opinion of the Pilot? I liked it. It was....okay. Not as surprising or as intriguing as the Pilot for Lost, but by the end of the 90 min. episode I was wondering what they would do next.
There were tons of similarities to The X-Files, from shadowy government conspiracies to see-thru corpses. What is with Abrams and plane crashes anyway? Okay, so the plane didn't crash...it actually landed...however everyone on board was dead.....very ugly dead I might add. Yeeesh.
The beginning was sort of slow after the bit with the plane. But once the lead character Olivia got the crazy scientist, Walter, and his son, Peter, into dad's old lab in a basement at Harvard, things picked up a little. Btw, I can totally see Olivia and Peter eventually being a couple. It's a little sad how predictable TV has gotten. Half way through the Pilot he was already caring about her. ;)
Fringe has cool effects, some clever camerawork, and from what I can see, some real potential. There were some laughs here and there. Not sure whether they were all intentional or not. John Noble (Denethor in LOTR) plays Walter and I must say had the best performance in the Pilot. Blair Brown was equally impressive in her brief scene.
I'll keep watching for now. See where it goes. Problem is....it's on dreaded Fox, so who knows how long it'll stick around.
