First Impressions: 4.01 Lazarus Rising
Sep. 24th, 2008 11:57 pmI've abandoned my full-length episode reviews for these shorter, First Impressions posts.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

Sorry for the long delay. I was unable to type up any notes during the initial airing of the episode (too busy watching and drooling over the boys!). So I re-watched the episode yesterday and typed this up.
These notes will be more detailed and less rambly than they usually are. I tried to keep them as short as I could, and of course, failed miserably.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.
Oh yeah....awesome recap music.
Love the opening shots of screams with Dean's wild eyes! A very abstract, yet frightening glimpse into Dean's time in Hell.
Having already seen Dean climb from his pine box in the pirated ComicCon YouTube video, it wasn't anything new, but seeing the shot of the circle of downed trees around him was very new! Cool visual effects shot!
Love the new Title card! With the crows it instantly made me think of Edgar Allan Poe.
OMG...Dean in just a t-shirt! *flails*
Seeing a guy drink a bottle of water has never been hotter. *drools*
Pontiac, Illinois.....Sept. 18, 2008....so cool that it's the episode's airdate!
Wow! No sign of the Hellhound attack at all on that lovely chest. *guh*
Maybe...just maybe we'll see more of Dean in a single layer if he has to keep showing off that handprint mark, huh? You think? *hopes*
Love how we're back to the number 3 with Dean. Often times when Dean shoots someone/something, it's 3 times. This time, he grabs 3 bottles of water. :)
Heehee! The Busty Asian Beauties mag. A boy's gotta stock up on the essentials. *g*
Even dirty and sweaty Jensen looks incredibly hot.
Always handy to have salt in a gas station convenience store!
The flying glass sequence was very cool.
Sam's number is disconnected and Bobby doesn't take lightly to hearing a voice from beyond the grave. He threatens to kill whoever it is who's calling. Seems like a hollow threat, considering Bobby probably has no idea where Dean is even calling from. Heh.
Very cool that there happens to be an old car there at the gas station. It's a Mercury, btw. :)
I love the reunion with Bobby. Naturally, he can't believe his eyes and thinks Dean's a shapeshifter or a revenant. Dean finally convinces him by cutting his arm with the silver knife Bobby tried to attack him with. Btw, I love how rough Jensen's voice is in these early scenes. So sexy and realistic. We also learn that Bobby's middle name is Steven. Cool!
Gotta love that hug....just like a father and son. “It's good to see you boy. Yeah, you too.” Awwwww.....*sniffles*
The bit with the Holy Water was a hilarious stroke of genius. It's so unexpected at that moment. Poor Dean....he had to claw out of his coffin, gets showered with flying glass, has to cut his arm, and now gets splashed in the face with water. What a day! LOL!
“Yeah, I know. I should look like a Thriller video reject.”
“I remember I was a Hellhound's chew toy.”
Love the great lines in this eppy.
Dean's so relieved to hear that Sam is alive. You gotta believe he was worried about that from the moment he found out Sam's phone number was out of commission.
Sam was quiet after Dean's death and went off on his own, only insisting that they bury Dean instead of the usual salt and burn. Like Dean said, thank goodness Sam won that argument. Dean instantly starts to suspect that Sam made some kind of deal to get him out.
Oooh....time to show off that handprint again! Oh, yeah baby...take it off! *ahem* Dean suspects it's the mark of a demon.
Wedge Antilles.....I love this show! *draws hearts around Kripke & Co. for their Star Wars references*
Dean's changed clothes. Did he have a stash of extras at Bobby's?
“Are you kiddin' me? What don't I know about that kid.” Oh, Dean....if you only knew....
Bobby's been hitting the liquor. Yeah, things have not been easy since Dean's death.
Jensen looks stunningly beautiful here. *thud*
Oh, THE SCENE! The one we've all waited for. Brothers reunited....and it couldn't be better.
Kristy opens the door wondering why it takes 2 guys to deliver a pizza. Of course, knowing that we'll discover that Kristy is really Ruby makes this scene all the more perplexing. But oh, well....that's not what this scene is really about. It's about the boys. *loves*
Poor Sam. What a shocker to see your dead brother standing mere feet away from you. He can barely even breathe after Dean speaks to him, “Hey, ya Sammy”. His response is the same as Bobby's - this can't be Dean. He attacks with a knife, but Bobby holds him off, telling him it's really Dean.
“I know. I look fantastic, huh?” Dean....always with the wise-cracks, but it's probably the one thing Sam needed as proof that his brother was actually standing before him. It's such a genuinely Dean thing to do. Lighten the tense moment. No wonder Sam crumbled into Dean's arms, much the same way he did at the end of Mystery Spot. The hug is everything a fan could want. Long, heartfelt, and full of love between these brothers who have entered our hearts. They hold on for dear life, as if they'll never let go, wouldn't want to. I love how there's no music here, even the song that had been playing in the background when Kristy opened the door is now mysteriously absent. There needs to be no audio clue as to what emotions are in this moment. It's just the brothers, finally together at last....as it should be. Sniffling, holding on, and with Bobby looking on at his boys with tears in his eyes. It's a touching family reunion.
The boys separate, with lingering hands on shoulders and arms before they pull apart completely. We then get the obligatory “the boys must be gay” question from Kristy. I know why it's there. It's Kripke playing with the fans again, but the more I see the episode, the more it bothers me. Knowing that Kristy is really Ruby, and knows the brothers, her question is very odd and unwarranted. The scene would have played just as well without it and frankly, I kind of wish Kripke would let the matter drop.
Love how Sam is acting like Dean here....not remembering Kristy's name. *gigglesnort* Anyone else notice the tiger print on the wall? Looks like the same one that was in Andy's van in “Simon Said”. Heehee!
Dean's immediately looking for an explanation from Sam. He's sure a deal was made, but Sam said he didn't do anything. Sam explains he tried everything from opening the Devil's Gate to making deals, but nothing worked. This is a great scene between the two of them. I love the tension and the emotion. Sam apologizing broke my heart, same as Dean forgiving him did. Oh, boys.....you're too much.
======================================
Beer time! Heh.
Nice how Bobby mentions Sam being like John - going off alone. Sam apologizes to him too. My word, the boys look handsome here. *loves Kim Manners*
Sam's followed a bunch of demons there and Dean thinks maybe they're after him. Bobby wonders if Dean's feeling himself, but Dean answers again that he's not feeling demonic in any way.
Good old Bobby knows a psychic who may know something. He leaves the boys and we get our second brotherly moment. Sam returns the amulet necklace to Dean. Awwwwww.....*feels warm fuzzies* It's another lovely moment. It's touching to know that Sam kept the necklace all this time, that he kept something of Dean's. Sam wants to know what Hell was like, but Dean truthfully answers that he doesn't remember anything.
We then cut to Dean in the bathroom, where he again gets flashes of Hell. So Dean is remembering, but it's nothing I suspect to what he'll eventually remember down the road as the season progresses. I can't wait to see how bad it gets. Yep, what can I say? I like my Dean emotionally tormented. *g*
They all head out to the cars and Dean is happily reunited with the last member of the Winchesters....the Impala! Love how he talks to her and calls her sweetheart. He gets behind the wheel, loving the feel of his car at last, only to notice Sam has added an iPod jack! Heehee! “You were supposed to take care of her, not douche her up.” LOL! Even more hilarious is the song that comes on when he starts the engine! It's Jason Manns singing “Visions”....Jensen's good buddy. Awesome! The looks between the two of them here is great. Sam's all innocent and Dean's annoyed. Hee! And Dean swiftly tosses that iPod into the backseat.
We get our first discussion in the car scene. And as usual it's about Dean finding out things from Sam. What happened after he died and if Sam's been using his powers. Sam tells the truth except about his powers, easily dismissing that he's been hanging out with Ruby (who he claims is in hell or dead). Oh, Sammy. Lying to your brother is not a good thing.
I like Pamela. Love how she calls them “the boys” (just like the crew does on the set) and sizes them up right away.
More nice touches of the brothers being the good old boys we love so much. Dean flirting with Pamela and her firing right back. She even invites Sam, but Dean quickly tells him he's not invited. Hee!
Seance time and Pamela gets a little fresh with Dean, going for his crotch! LOL! And again we get the handprint! Sam looks on in shock. Love that hurt expression. See, Sammy. You're not the only one not revealing everything.
Did you see the EOD???? So awesome that Jensen brought out the Eyeball Of Doom!
*bounces in giddiness* He is the master of facial expressions. We learn the name of the one who pulled Dean out, Castiel. He warns Pamela, but she presses on, with disastrous results...her eyes burned out.
=========================================
The boys are hanging out at Johnny Mac's Diner and debating what to do next. Dean wants to summon Castiel, but Sam wants to go after the demons he followed into town. Thing is, those demons are right inside the diner. Dean handles the whole situation very well, staring down the waitress demon and realizing that the demons don't know anything more than they do. Love the perky nipples line, btw. And it's easy to miss that little moment where Sam tries to do something (use his powers?) and Dean stops him. Big brother still has some power. Nice to see. Jensen aces this scene with his facial expressions alone. It's all there in his eyes and it's a masterful performance.
I've seen some debate about when Dean slaps the demon, but really.....while a little surprising that he would haul off and hit her not once, but twice....it was a challenge. One that wasn't answered. Which was the whole point. He was testing to see if they would do anything. As Dean points out moments later, they're scared of whatever pulled him from the pit. Nice touch with paying for the pie, too. Classic Dean.
Dean's sleeping (how lovely to see that) and Sam sneaks out and takes off in the Impala. Kind of chilling to see that same expression on his face that we saw in Mystery Spot. Cold determination. Dean soon awakens to that loud pitched noise again. Grabbing a shotgun, he's ready for action, but the noise gets too intense and soon he's surrounded by breaking glass and mirrors (from above - yikes!). Bobby comes in and we go to break. Aaaaggghh!
=====================================
Dean & Bobby head off and Dean calls Sam. The lies continue, on both sides and Bobby's right to look worried. Dean wants to summon Castiel. “It's high noon, baby.” Sam, meanwhile, is back at the diner and finds another body with burned out eyes. The waitress demon attacks and after a drag out fight, he sees that her eyes are missing as well. She says it's the end, the demons are dead. Then Sam pulls out the Jedi Mind powers, which are most impressive. He expells the demonic black smoke, but is dismayed that the body didn't survive. We then see Kristy emerge from the back, praising him. He finally calls her Ruby and she states no demon is responsible for what's been going on.
Bobby & Dean have set up “one hell of an art project” in some metal barn. Bobby still thinks this is bad idea, but performs the summoning ritual anyway.
Ruby wants to know if Sam's going to tell Dean about what he's been up to. Sam says he will, but has to find the way and knows Dean will just try and stop him. Ruby doesn't want to get between the brothers and thinks she should step back. Sam admits he's not sure that what he's doing is right, but he's saving people and killing demons and he wants to keep going. Hmmm....*worries*
Back at the barn, Dean & Bobby are still waiting. Then things pick up in a big way, wind howling, lights bursting, and a man enters. The shotguns have no effect and neither does the demon-killing knife. Uh-oh. “I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition.” What an awesome line! He puts the whammy on poor Bobby and tells Dean they need to talk.
======================================
Castiel comes right out and tells Dean he's “an angel of the Lord”. Dean, predictably, doesn't believe. “This is your problem, Dean. You have no faith.” He then reveals his wings, in glorious fashion. Castiel is very likable. Calm and reserved. Dean doesn't buy it. “Good things do happen Dean” Dean's response of, “Not in my experience.” is very telling. All he's known is tragedy. How could he possibly believe in light and goodness. Castiel seems surprised about Dean's lack of self-worth. “You don't think you deserve to be saved.” All too true. We've known this about Dean from S1. Dean still wants an answer, “Why'd you do it? “ And the answer is “Because God commanded it. Because we have work for you.” Ooooooooh!!!!!!
This episode blew me away....easily. That's really all I can say. It gave me everything I wanted and opened the door to what looks to be an exciting season. I'd like to point out that the sides for this eppy, were indeed misleading as I suspected. Clever Kripke, very clever. Not only were lines completely different, but the being Pamela summoned was not the YED and Castiel is not a demon. Heh. Sneaky writers. So now we know they are messing with us as far as the sides go.
One could say it's easy to be impressed with this first eppy after such a long hiatus, but the fact is that it was good....very good. You can't do much better with Kim Manners at the helm and Jensen and Jared's acting shined like we've come to expect. Now it's on to filling in the answers that have been posed since day one. I, for one, can't wait to see this season unfold. Will it turn into a battle of Good vs. Evil? Brother vs. Brother? Hard to say. Either way, I'm along for the ride and I look forward to seeing where Kripke will take the brothers....and us. :)
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)
