First Impressions: 4.03 In The Beginning
Oct. 11th, 2008 01:18 amI've abandoned my full-length episode reviews for these shorter, First Impressions posts.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
We hardly saw Sam in this eppy, so here's two caps of Dean. Sorry Sammy.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

Sorry (again) for the long delay. Life and all that. I only typed up my notes for this eppy late Thursday night, but I tried my best to do them as if I was seeing the episode for the first time. Hopefully I kept them short enough. Enjoy. :)
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.
Nice recap of the whole Winchester mythology, along with Castiel saving Dean.
No rock music, but it's okay.
Oh, Sammy....where are you off to now?
Dean sleeping with his leather jacket. OTP :)
Oooh....more flashbacks of Hell!
Castiel puts the sleeping/time travel whammy on Dean and off we go...
Love how the entire color pallet changed to bright colors.
Yeah, no cell reception....big surprise.
Great casting btw, for John and Mary. They're excellent.
Star Trek reference FTW!
Love hearing that Allman Brothers song again....one of my faves.
Too bad we didn't get to see John's home life in this eppy.
Love the Dean CU shots!
Ladner Village Inn....ooops! :)
Heehee....DeLoreans.
Castiel is being as cryptic as ever...”you have to stop it”.
Proof that you should never turn your back on an angel...
Ugh....no!!!!! Not the van, John! *gets major Scooby-Doo vibe*
Thank goodness for Dean steering him to the Impala. :)
Which begs the question....did Dean just choose his own car? Heh.
Dean Van Halen....LOL
Dean....you gotta stop doing that...the boy just never knows when to quit - you're freaking people out again. LOL
Is Dean driving a....Pinto??? Hee.
“Sammy, wherever you are...mom is a babe. I'm going to hell...again.” LOL!!!!
What a sweet couple....
Whoah! What the??? Mary, that's your boy you're kicking!
OMG! She's a hunter???? *mind boggles*
===============================
Heh, heh...Dean lurking in the shadows.
Whoah....the whole family hunts.
Hee...Deanna and Samuel. *iz amused*
Oh, food scenes...those are challenging to act in. Don't even get me started on the continuity errors in this scene....
Priests!!!!! “The Lord is funny that way.” LOL
Father Cheney....heh
OMG...no priest should be that hot looking....*drools*
Oh, the 10 year deal, we've heard that one before.
Old Yellow Eyes.....to quote Dean, “what a shocker”....hee
Okay, the whole cutting up bananas shot....cracks me up. So obvious that it's only purpose is to show that Deanna is a hunter, too and can wield a knife.
Daniel Elkins....cool
Dean's on a mission now....
Records!!!! So awesome. :)
This is a sweet, heartbreaking scene.
Love how Dean wants to know what his dad was really like.
Sounds like Mary & John have known each other for a long time....
How heartbreaking that Mary felt the same way about hunting that Dean does....it's not the life she wants.
And she doesn't want it for her children either, which really gets to Dean. Oh, the tears!
Jensen's breaking my heart again.....his impassioned plea to her to not get out of bed on that fateful night....oh, Dean! *wants to hold him*
Dean does care about the lives of others, but there's only so much he's willing to sacrifice and losing his family again is not something he wants to do again.
==================================
Love this scene between Dean and Elkins! Great shots of Dean!
Showdown! That intense stare! *dies*
Never really thought of Elkins having the Colt all that time. Interesting.
Heh....just a typical evening at the Campbell's....cleaning guns...LOL
Typical male....why is it always “our time of the month thing”?.....*sigh*
Oh, YED time!
Oh, dear.....he likes Mary and her spunk.....*iz creepy*
Love it when Dean comes bursting in, gun drawn and ready! *guh*
But sadly not fast enough, as the YED escapes.
Mary's a little weirded out that the demon likes her....who wouldn't be!
Methinks this is where Samuel gets possessed by the YED. He left the house alone.
Kinda shocking that Dean opens up and tells Samuel the whole truth.
Again....loving the Dean CU shots...Jensen looks amazing.
Heh....Dean's learned his lesson....won't let anyone touch the Colt.
Uh oh...it's old Yellow Eyes! Eeep! Dean!
That final look on Dean's face....impressive how Jensen goes from shock to murderous rage so smoothly. His last expression before the break? Chilling.
============================
Pileggi does a great job channeling Fred Lehne's performance. :)
“Are you one of my psychic kids?”
Oooh, the smell test....love Dean's disgusted turn away.
So Dean finally learns the truth....Sammy's got the demon blood.
Damn....we still don't really know what the YED is up to...
“Maybe not today. But you look into my eyes, you son of a bitch! 'Cause I'm the one that kills you.” Awesome line, delivered to perfection by Jensen...spitting venom with every word.
Oh no! Not grandpa!
Awww man! And he kills Deanna too.
Heh. It's that bridge again....
Awww man....she didn't even get to say yes...
Ouch! John!!!!! No!
Poor Mary!
“Let's kiss and make up.” Ewwwww....
He really doesn't leave her with much of a choice. What more could she do?
Oh, Dean....you're too late....again.
So the YED seals the deal with a kiss, too. Interesting. But, yeah...that was a little creepy, considering it was her dad.
Even Castiel looks sorry.....
What must poor John be thinking about all this? How on earth did Mary explain about her parent's deaths?
==============================
“Destiny can't be changed Dean. All roads lead to the same destination.”
Now Dean knows what the angels know....and us, of course.
And a final threat from Castiel....for Dean to stop Sam....”or we will” Oooooooh!!!!!!
Love that final shot of Dean....gorgeous!
“To Be Continued”???? What? No! *sigh*
I LOVED this episode! One of their best ever. So much was being revealed so quickly that I couldn't believe how long it all seemed. It was like Kripke opened the secret Bible for the show for all the fans to see. "This is what you've been wondering about. This is what you want to know." And boy, did we learn a lot. Hunting really is the family business. Filling in Mary's backstory is huge and it was a wonderful surprise to learn that she grew up as a hunter. And equally heartbreaking to hear that she didn't want the same fate for her children. Jensen rocked the acting, as he always does, but it had to be a challenge to not have Jared there to act with. So many episodes spent in that comfortable routine of Dean & Sam. I'm sure it was weird to suddenly go solo, but you'd never suspect it in Jensen's performance.
Totally awesome to have Mitch Pileggi as Dean's grandpa. I love it when my favorite shows collide. So we've had Mr. X and now Skinner. Can other X-Files alumni be far behind? *bounces* On a far personal note, I was thrilled to have the flashback take place in the year I was born, 1973. Very cool to experience cars, fashions, and music from that time period. :)
We hardly saw Sam in this eppy, so here's two caps of Dean. Sorry Sammy.
