The Sam/Ruby controversy
Oct. 16th, 2008 03:04 pmEnough is enough people. I'm really tired of hearing about this subject of whether Sam's a rapist or not for supposedly sleeping with the new Ruby. Fans of this show tend to overthink things far too much for their own good. I too, am guilty of this, but...really....just let it go.
So what if Jared said the two characters have been having sex?

It was pretty heavily hinted at right in the script sides. It describes Kristy as "A HOT CHICK, wearing a flimsy, short, lingerie-like robe." Funny how nobody made a big stink about it then. Now that the episode has aired, however, everyone's all "OMG Sam's a rapist 'cause he's doing it with Ruby who's possessing some poor girl's body". Sheesh.
Here's my take on the whole thing:
1) It's just a TV show.
2) You have to learn to separate Jared from his character. Whatever you think of Sam should not be a reflection on Jared. He's playing a part. It doesn't mean his character and morals are like Sam's in any way, shape, or form.
3) It's just a TV show.
4) The boys (Sam & Dean) do not live in a normal world. Do we have shapeshifters and demons running loose? Is your neighbor a werewolf? No. Sam & Dean's reality is an extreme version of our own. They have never really had a normal life. It's full of extremes, life and death, doing whatever you have to do to survive-type of decisions. Their take on their own reality is unique. Do we normally think of our dead loved ones rotting and suffering in Hell? No. Yet this was Sam's reality. He failed to save Dean from his fate. I'm sure his self esteem plummeted as a result. And he was now suddenly alone. Terribly alone. Left to face off against the bitter, violent world the Winchesters live in without his brother to help and guide him. Why wouldn't he seek some help from Ruby? Why wouldn't that involve seeking personal comfort as well? This is not the same Sam we met back in S1. He's no innocent college boy anymore. Yes, Sam's always been seen as the "good, moral brother". Parts of that are still there. But I'm not sure that Sam would look at Ruby and really think about the girl she's possessing. Certainly not in the state of mind he was in after Dean's death.
5) It's just a TV show.
6) Sam sleeping with Ruby also backs up his attempt to be more like Dean. He stated his plan to Dean about this in "Malleus Maleficaum". "Look, Dean, you're leaving right? And I gotta stay here in this craphole of a world, alone. So the way I see it, if I'm gonna make it, if I'm gonna fight this war after you're gone, then I gotta change. Into you, I gotta be more like you." Seems to me that becoming more like Dean would also include being more carefree about sex. We're also still waiting to find out what really happened right after Dean's death. What did Sam go through? What decisions did he make besides what we've been shown in the 4 episodes so far? There's a lot of unanswered questions and tainting the show with our own wild opinions is not beneficial to anyone. Where does it get us? We don't know Kripke's master plan.
7) Have I mentioned that it's just a TV show? (And still a pretty awesome one at that. If everyone will just calm down and enjoy it.)
There you have it. If my opinions differ from yours, so be it. I just felt the need to add some hopefully, more level-headed thoughts into this "issue".
