I've abandoned my full-length episode reviews for these shorter, First Impressions posts.

With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.

Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

Yay! I'm finally caught up now! Too bad it took me 4 days to do it. Thanks again for your patience!
As you'll see, I've returned to the more rambly, comment-while-it's-airing type of notes. I've left them "as is", so you'll see a lot of missed punctuation and lower-case on proper names. I think they're better this way, more spontaneous and fresh.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.

Recap: Big recap this week....starting with Sam telling Jess in the Pilot that he doesn't like Halloween.....oh, how far we've come....Castiel, Lilith, Sam's powers, yada, yada, yada....

Why is that pumpkin on the left upside down?
He's so digging into that candy stash....um....yep....
Whoah...cool shot from inside the mouth!
ewww....razor blades....yikes!
I can just see Kripke giggling with glee over this shot. :)

One day before Halloween...and the boys are in suits again...hee
Dean found a hex bag!

Don't keep Dean from his candy, Sam. “It's Halloween, man.”
Dean still doesn't like witches...
“He was so vanilla, he made vanilla seem spicy.” LOL

Heh....bobbing for apples isn't so lame after all, huh buddy?
Uh oh...something's wrong...she's gonna drown
oooh.....boiling water...

Heehee....”two words - jail bait”
Oh, yes you would, Dean...LOL
Another hex bag....

Oooh...purple & green motel room
LOL...that's a drawing from Dante's Inferno (and on closer inspection of the text, the book itself is Dante's Inferno - heh).
Dean on Leperchauns...”those little dudes are scary - small hands” Hee!
Yikes...everything coming at the same time....gonna be a busy night boys...

==========================

Hee....it's Halloween.....Dean's been eating a lot of candy...
“Big steamy pile of nothing”....a great line comes back for seconds *giggles*

LOL.....Dean's in dreamland with the hot cheerleader....whoo-hoo!

Oh, those are some creepy masks....and Dean's having Hell flashbacks...ooooh
LOL....making a bong in class????
So it's Tracy.....hmmmm

That's a very green motel.
Dean's not sharing his candy stash...hee. And astronaut boy is not amused.

Oooh...Sam meets Castiel!!!!
And he's all awkward....hee
Castiel is a little reluctant to take Sam's hand, but he's glad the younger Winchester isn't using his powers anymore.
Uriel is not a friendly dude. Love Dean calling him Chuckles. :P
They're there to destroy the town....kind of the take-no-prisoners type of angels.....

=========================

Hmmm....unquestioning angels....
The boys aren't leaving. It's smite the town or take them with it.
Ooooh...Dean being all badassl in Uriel's face! Awesome!

Payback's a bitch, isn't it Dean?.....heehee
Oooh...nice angle inside the car
Sam was expecting the angels to be different...
Awww....I like Dean still giving Sam hope about God and angels. Big brother moment! *loves*

The plot thickens.....so Don the teacher is the witch!

Uriel doesn't think much of humans “plumbing on two legs”...
At least Castiel is the voice of reason...
Hmmm....true orders?

Don is working his witchcraft mojo and Tracy's going to be the sacrifice.
Oooh....3 bullets...must be the boys....heh
She's in on it too!
oh boys....in pain....*hugs them*
Sam, what the hell???
ewww....bloody-faced boys
Btw, there's a continuity issue with that blood on Dean's face. Hee!
whoah....it's demon time
Now he's Demon!Don
well....so much for true love...ouch
Did you notice? Now the blood is across Dean's forehead. It wasn't when Sam smeared it on him.
Smart!Sammy! “You gave it a shot?”....hey, Dean it worked!

==========================

Uh, oh....Sam wants to use his powers and Dean's not going for it.
The knife is good enough. Well, we'll see about that Dean....

Yeah....that ain't Don anymore, kid....
Oh, that can't be good...
Whoah! the dead have arisen
Boys don't separate!
oh...creepy zombies!
“Bring it on, Stinky” LOL Dean!

“That demon ray gun stuff....doesn't work on me.” It's Don vs Sam smackdown time.
“Zombie ghost orgy, huh? Well, that's it. I'm torchin' everybody.” Heehee! Dean doesn't mess around.
Dean....you'd better help Sam...oh, maybe not. It's Jedi Power time!
Sam...he's stronger than you....
oh, no....Dean's watching and Sam knows it....
Oh, that looks painful...but it worked.
Whoah...Sammy....and Dean looks a little stunned.

==========================

One day after Halloween...and Uriel is visiting Sam....oooh
And reminding Sam that he's been warned twice not to use his powers.
Oooh....”you are dicks”... better be nice to him Sammy. These are not nice, fluffy angels. “...one word, one...and I will turn you into dust.”
Hmmm....planting the question over what Dean remembers from Hell.

Oooh....they were supposed to follow Dean's orders.....it was a test
Did you notice? Castiel laughed a little! He does have a sense of humor! :)
So even Castiel has doubts....interesting
More decisions for Dean to make down the road....great, like he hasn't had enough of those in his lifetime....

I've read a few reviews of this episode, breaking my cardinal rule about reading the reviews of others before I write my own. They both liked the episode, but generally didn't think it was one of the best of the season thus far. I have to sort of agree. It was good, had a lot of good scenes, but parts of it were sort of lacking. I really can't point out anything in particular that didn't work, which makes it equally frustrating. I guess one let down was that it looked like the boys were going to have a massive fight on their hands, facing a lot of the creatures from the past that they've faced before. But nothing like that happened at all. The big climax came down to Sam using his powers to exorcise Samhain. We barely even saw what Dean was doing to battle the zombies. We got a brief glimpse and then he was there in the hall, watching Sam struggle against Samhain. It was good but...*shrugs* I think the advertising kind of let us down on this one.

The comic touches with Dean eating the Halloween candy was nice and the scenes with the angels were definite highlights. Perhaps the best scene was the final one between Dean and Castiel. Jensen wears Dean with a aging weariness in the scene, squinting against the sun, but enjoying seeing the kids that he knows are alive because of him and Sam. I like that Hell is never very far from Dean's thoughts, something that Castiel continues to make note of. But again, I want more than Dean just hearing sounds and staring into space. Hopefully we'll get some answers in a few more episodes. :)
