First Impressions: 4.08 Wishful Thinking

raloriaI've abandoned my full-length episode reviews for these shorter, First Impressions posts.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.

Meh. So much for being caught up. I'm waaaaaay late with this one. Sorry about that. Somehow getting this post done got lost in the shuffle that was life this week. :(
As you'll see, I've returned to the more rambly, comment-while-it's-airing type of notes. I've left them "as is", so you'll see a lot of missed punctuation and lower-case on proper names. I think they're better this way, more spontaneous and fresh.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.

Oh, Jensen....you've killed me again....you've truly broken my heart in this final scene....
Dean remembers everything from Hell, but he won't talk about it to Sam because he can't possibly understand....”The things that I saw. There aren't words. There is no forgetting. There's no making it better. Because it is right here… forever. You wouldn't understand. And I could never make you understand. So I am sorry.”
Oh, show....what a rollercoaster ride of emotions in one episode! *loves*
What would seem to be a laugh-fest of an episode, which we've seen a lot of this season so far, is really I think, setting us up for the angst-filled episodes to come. Sure, it was all cute little girls, wishing wells, invisible perverts, and suicidal giant teddy bears, but the underlying conflict throughout was Dean keeping the truth from Sam. In the end, of course, Dean comes clean and confesses in what is truly one of the show's more heart-wrenching final scenes. But more on that in a minute...
Let's hear it for them finally setting a whole episode in my home state of Washington!!! Woot!!!!! And, yes, Concrete is a real town. It's in the mountains though near the Canadian border (not near the coast, which is what I think they were trying to imply somehow). Thank you, Kripke! You fulfilled one of my wishes. Speaking of fulfilled wishes....I'm so happy that giant teddy bear turned out to be as hilarious as it was. When I first heard about it, I had my doubts. Could they pull it off? Yes they could and did. The suicide scene was so demented yet so side-splittingly funny. Thank you Ben Edlund! You didn't get your wishing fish story, but this worked just as well. More bothersome is the part with Wes and Hope. So what if Wes looks a little nerdy...he's not ugly. Why wouldn't Hope fall for him? Yet Sam right away is suspicious the second he sees them in the restaurant. As if a pretty girl couldn't possibly be interested in a guy like Wes. That's kind of sad and explains a lot of how we see each other in today's society. In real life nerdy guys are not supposed to be with the hot chicks. Even at the end, when the spell is broken, she just leaves Wes standing by the well. Couldn't there have been even a small shred of hope for the guy? Maybe make her ask who he is and at least talk to him? But no....she's not supposed to be with a guy like him, so she walks away. Their part of the story was the only part I really didn't agree with. It was a bit of a let down for me.
Which brings us to the best part of the episode...Dean finally admitting he remembers all of his time in Hell. Jensen's facial expressions and the dead look in his eyes speaking more than words ever could. And Jared as well...Sam's last look at Dean showing that helplessness of a brother wanting nothing more than to take the hurt away. I'm not ashamed to say I've watched that scene over 20 times since last week. It's powerful, emotional, painful, sad, and everything I've been wanting, yet not giving the full picture. That will come soon and I can't wait to finally learn more. Major angst-filled episodes? Yes, please! I'm ready. :D
