With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.

As you'll see, I've returned to the more rambly, comment-while-it's-airing type of notes. I've left them "as is", so you'll see a lot of missed punctuation and lower-case on proper names. I think they're better this way, more spontaneous and fresh.

Flashback: sam trying....he can't do it....oh, this is getting ugly....and painful....ruby ends it with the knife...he doesn't want to talk about dean...oooh....she tried to kiss him and he pulled away!!!....oh wow....sam and ruby getting it on!

Lilith was in town....
Flashback: 5 months earlier....ruby's figured out sam wants to die killing lilith - doesn't want to go on living without dean....wow..he almost killed ruby with the knife!

This is going to be a long week. *whimpers*
SPN hits another one out of the ballpark. I had a lot of anticipation for this two-parter and I must say the first episode did not disappoint. This time everything was centered around Sam and his struggles during the 4 months that Dean was gone. I suspect the next episode, in turn, will revolve a lot around Dean and his time in Hell. Meanwhile, we have Anna, who I like, but don't entirely trust and Alistair, who is one bad demon and was very close to Dean in Hell. And then there's Ruby, who we learn pulled Sam from his own pit of Hell after Dean's death, had some very hot and dirty sex with him, and ultimately saved his life.
I'll hit my personal highlights of this eppy:
Anna: Love the hair color! I wanna sympathize with her, but I have my doubts over the whole "I'm an innocent who somehow can hear angels talking" vibe we're supposed to get from her.
Ruby & Sam: Okay, so the wankers can shut up about Sam raping the girl Ruby is possessing. 'Course now some of them are charging him with necrophilia which is equally as ridiculous. He wasn't having sex with a stiff corpse, people! Yeah, the scene was hot....and a little disturbing only because Sam resisted at first. But he was so messed up at that point that he was simply seeking some comfort and love from somebody. Did Ruby take advantage of his situation? Absolutely. As much as she's seemingly fighting on the good side, she's still a demon and manipulation is what they're all about. It was also nice to see Genevieve given a chance to really work. I know a lot of people don't like her, but I think she's doing a heck of a job. It can't be easy taking over a role from someone else. All I can say to the naysayers is - remember you didn't like Katie until she was gone. Pbbbbbt! :P
Boys meet window: What an awesome stunt! Knowing that Jensen & Jared did that one themselves makes it all the better. Whoo-hoo! Go boys!!!! :D
Broken & Bloody: Thank you Sera Gamble for finally fulfilling one of my wishes by showing the boys patching themselves up. For years we've only had fanfiction scenes to sustain us, but now we have episodic proof of what they do. Awesome work on the makeup and effects and the boys for selling it all. Putting Dean's shoulder back in place was excellent!.....except less so for poor Dean. Ouch!
The Dean: Since this eppy was mostly about Sam, there wasn't a lot of screen time for the elder brother (which I'm sure Jensen was happy about - more sleep time for him!). But at least he finally learned what Sam went through after his death and why he trusts Ruby. I'm sure he still doesn't care for her that much, but maybe now he'll at least add her to his Christmas card list. Heh. :P
So big thumbs up from me on this one. Shocking, I know. ;)
Can't wait to see part two!!!!! I want angst! Bring me the angst!!!! *bounces*
