SPN Revealed S2 - 2.05 Simon Said

Think you know every SPN episode inside and out? So did I, but a new HDTV with a great picture and sound changed all that. I started to see things that I'd never noticed before. After a while I decided to make a list of all the things big and small that I came across, episode by episode.
I'd like to think of this as an in-depth look into Supernatural. It's a collection of interesting observations, continuity errors, goofs, filmmaking techniques, statistics, important (or not so important) information, trivia, and anything else that struck me as unusual.
Get Involved: I'm always open to continuity errors, etc. spotted by others. If you see something that I don't have in a post, drop me a comment in the post or a PM, and I'll look into it. If I can confirm it and include it in that episode's post, I'll give you credit for the find.
For this reason, these posts will occasionally be updated. I'll post about the changes when they occur.

I'm sorry, but if someone shot some guy in the chest with a shotgun in my presence? I'd be hitting the deck. These people (seen in the background) just stand around like targets!
Erik, is that you? It might be my geeky brain, but I've always thought the voice doing the DJ's voice on the Impala's radio in this shot was Kripke.
On Jo's CU as the boys leave the Roadhouse, you can see Sam toss Dean his leather jacket.
Semi-Regular Feature - Sammyfrown: I try to keep track of these when I can. While they're in the car after leaving the roadhouse we see a Sammyfrown!

License Issued: 4-19-2004 Expires: 2-17-08
Weight: 140lbs.
No respect for Dean's coffee obsession: Look at the difference in levels between the 2 coffee cups. Tracy doesn't even fill Dean's cup up near the top like she did with Sam's.
Location, Location: Andy's van is parked on Orchard St. & Scoddin (?) (hard to read the cross street). I tried to look up an Orchard Street in Vancouver and all over where the production usually films and came up with nothing. I do know they filmed parts of it in Langley and North Vancouver, but that's about it. Any of my neighbors up around or in Vancouver, Canada have any idea where there's an Orchard Street?

Writers having fun: Andy's License Plate: RU-OBI-1...as in "Are you Obi-wan?" Muhahahahahaha!
When the Doc is hit by the bus, it's pretty bloody (his one shoe even goes flying), but in the next scene there's hardly any blood or even very much physical trauma visible on the body. It's intact! Plus, both his shoes are back on.
Look out! Oh...ooops. Too late.
Ouch! That looks painful.
Totally lost his right arm.
And there goes his shoe.
Both shoes are on again.
Shouldn't there be more blood on the guy? That was a hard hit. There's a little blood on his face, but he's pretty clean.

We end up seeing this same tiger print in Sam's motel room in S4's "Lazarus Rising".

You can see the special gel on the stunt woman's clothes before Andy's mom lights herself on fire at the gas station. As I recall this scene was filmed in Langley, B.C.
For all of Ansom's powers of persuasion over people, you'd think the guy would be driving a better car than this old clunker.
Andy's stealthy skills: When the boys stop the car to save Tracy from Ansom, you never hear Andy get out of the car. There isn't even a door creak.
Casts aren't just useful in healing bones, but come in handy as a weapon as well. Ouch!
Where are we, again?: According the sign on the dam the boys walk past, it's the “James Fork River Dam: The State Of Oklahoma”....yeah, right....like there's giant dams like that surrounded by pine trees in Oklahoma! Btw, there really is a James Fork River in Oklahoma....but I highly doubt the terrain looks anything like this (having been through OK myself). According to the SPN S2 Companion Book, the scenes at the dam were filmed at Cleveland Dam in North Vancouver, B.C.
Ooops...your mark is showing: When Sam gets back into the car at the dam, you can see Jared's mark in red tape on the ground.
We finally get a good view of the bar...
and a good chunk of the interior of Harvelle's Roadhouse.

| A few important notes... Over the run of the S1 SPN Revealed posts, I was asked how I'm so good at spotting continuity errors and other little happenings in the episodes. The simple answer is that I'm a Script Supervisor (also known as Continuity in England). I've only worked on a few college student films and an independent film, but I know the job well. The Script Supervisor does a lot, but the basic job description is to keep track of continuity during filming, everything from hair & make-up, to props and lighting. On the set, you have to catch everything you can - quickly. The difference with doing this to SPN episodes is that I can take my time, back up the video countless times, and even look frame by frame. I don't hunt down these instances to be critical of the SPN crew. I know even from my limited experience how hard they work every week and I have the utmost respect for them. But it's interesting what little mistakes get by even a professional crew. It's also interesting to continue to find new elements to these episodes that many of us have seen dozens of times. |
