I've abandoned my full-length episode reviews for these shorter, First Impressions posts.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

I only got one comment to my First Impressions for 4x11, so I thought I'd try extra hard to get this one posted quickly and see if that helps. I ended up using caps from my own recording for the fanart pieces here because otherwise I would have had to wait a couple of days for the High-Def download.
As you'll see, I've returned to the more rambly, comment-while-it's-airing type of notes. I've left them "as is", so you'll see a lot of missed punctuation and lower-case on proper names. I think they're better this way, more spontaneous and fresh.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.
SPN 4x12 First Impressions
Recap: Sam's powers, Ruby, Alistair
So it's Magic Week in Sioux City.....
Drunken magician guy is a jerk
LOL “what a douche bag”
Older magicians vs. the new generation.....
Oh, man....The Table Of Death....
why do I have a bad feeling about this? because it's SPN, of course....
Wait a sec....Vance (drunken magician)...wasn't he on DA???? Wasn't he the guy in charge of the Red Series in S1? Yep, I was right. It's Alex Zahara, who played Johanssen in 2 episodes of Dark Angel.
ooops....and now he's dead....ouch
LOL....love how they keep using the word douchebag....
boys in suits again!!!! *loves*
whoah....okay, Goth Magician guy is kinda freaky with his card trick
oooh...sam was into magic as a kid....guess that explains the pickpocketing skills ;)
hee...bunny!
oooh tarot card premonition
Hmmm....did Jay work a deal to get the gift of magic he's got now?
Dean is Federal Agent, Ulrich....*giggles*
Hee...I've already seen this scene, but it's still funny
LOL...”big boy”....”what's your safe word?” Dean looked like he was gonna puke there for a second :P
Ah....Ruby
34 seals have been broken....oooh
Who else is distracted by the visible bathroom in the background? Kinda funny how that used to be taboo years ago.
She wants him to quit screwing around and get busy going after Lilith
Hee...poor Dean - he doesn't wanna talk about it....
uh oh, boys....they're on to you
Heh....dean has no idea what he's talking about
Hmmmm....so I guess Goth Magician guy is gonna die next
yep...and Jay is fine
This is kinda like “Playthings”
============================
Research time! :D
Wow....dean thinks they'll be dead by the time they're 60
I'm remembering Rufus's discussion with Dean near the end of S3....
Here we go.....Sam wants to go after Lilith now, but he doesn't come right out and say that to dean.....hmmm
another tarot card....
boys are making the connection to jay....go boys!
Heh....Jay slipped past Sam
oh yes!!!! Dean door kick! :D I've missed those!
Heh....the boys are puzzled..
Hee...so they tie Jay up and and discuss....
LOL....and Jay escapes! Dean: “Guess we shoulda seen that one coming”
uh oh boys....police

Table Of Death time again....wow...he did it again....
ooops....Charlie died this time....so much for my theory
Boys are free. Yay!!!!!
Now Jay's willing to listen to them....
The only one left as a suspect is Vernon....
Oh.....feel the sting of that statement, Sammy?
Heh....sneaky boys to check out Vernon's room
Jay doesn't want to do this anymore....
oh.....it wasn't Vernon
Young!Charlie!....whoah
===========================
oh wow.....charlie's immortal
he wants vernon and jay to join him....
yay! boys!
oh god....dean! getting hanged
oh no....sammy! not the Table Of Death!
oh wow....Jay stopped him
someone wanna help poor dean....um...guys?
poor Jay
===========================
Jay's lost his magic mojo.... :(
and Vernon left....
wow...this one doesn't feel good at all
oh....sam goes to take a walk....except he's hooking up with Ruby instead....uh oh
I get the impression Jay's not long for this world.
Okay, First Impressions....this was a good episode. It didn't have the plot hole troubles like last week's, but it still doesn't quite measure up to the other episodes this season. My one quibble, and it's small, would be not enough time spent with the brothers. But it kept me guessing throughout and I really enjoyed that. I also really enjoyed and yet was saddened by their discussion about growing old or dying. How sad to even think that in the series, but at the same time so fitting for the boys to think about it, considering they've both died and come close to death all the time. It's a dangerous life they lead and Dean's always figured he'd die in the line of duty anyway. We've known this since Season One's "Faith". Sam's still looking for hope, for an answer. By the end of the episode, despite his initial misgivings, he's found the answer, going off with Ruby to use his powers again in preparation for taking down Lilith.
It was hard to see the episode end on such a sad note. Jay had such hope when he got his gift of magic back. He had a reason to live again. Now that's gone and his two best friends are gone as well. What's left for him? He did the right thing in killing Charlie, but he's now left a bitter, lonely old man. Which naturally brings us back to Dean and Sam. I think they'd rather die side by side than one of them going on alone like that.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
