"In My Time Of Dying" Review/Observations

I taped the episode and then just finished watching it a second time and still - wow! What a way to begin the season.
Just my initial observations...and some of them are in random order because I was trying to take notes during the commmercial breaks and sometimes just couldn't keep up. So some of this is just from memory.
- It's like the summer never existed...we're right back at the crash scene, "Bad Moon Rising" and all - excellent. Kripke's true to his word.
- Sam waking up and confronting the Demon!TruckDriver - yikes. Then how he yells for John and Dean...poor Sammy.
- I like the new title card. The flames are great.
- Hey, this is in widescreen! Yay!
- It took until daylight for help to come to the car wreck?????
- I love how they showed Dean becoming a spirit, no special effects or anything, just interesting and simple camera work. Nice.
- Sam did hear Dean..."Mojo". Hee hee! The look on Sam's face even as he said it was like "Where did that come from?".
- John does care about his boys. He asks about Dean's condition before asking Sam about the Colt.
- Ok, when I saw the Impala in the daylight...ouch! And Bobby, what are you saying? Of course the Impala can be saved! Don't you realize the millions of fans who will riot if that car doesn't come back?
- Love Sam's reaction to Bobby's remarks by connecting the car to Dean. Oh Sammy, sniff!
- Loved the scene with Dean talking to John about how he always did everything John ever asked of him (too true) and pleading for John to do something to save him. Just broke my heart.
- Still love that scene we got a preview of online. John and Sam going at it once again, but this time Dean can't do anything to stop it...or so he thinks.
- "Dude, I full on Swayzed that mother." Great Dean line!
- Dean's in trouble! Sammy's near tears! *Sniffle* Oh, and for some reason I loved watching Jensen fly back into that wall in slow motion after grabbing the reaper spirit. Just too cool! What can I say, the man looks great in slow motion.
- I liked Tessa. She was very sympathetic towards Dean. Jensen yet again shows a great range of emotion here. At first he's all against dying, saying he has to stay to protect his family. Then she tells him he'll become an angry spirit and turn into the very thing he hunts. After that, you can see Dean wondering if he should just let go and die. But luckily we'll never know what his decision would have been.
- Dean's still a hero. He wants to save everyone (ie. the little girl who dies).
- Dean doesn't believe in fate or an honorable death.
- Love the Ouija Board scene. Dean: "I feel like I'm at a slumber party." And Dean tells Sam the truth about the Reaper coming after him. But of course, Sam is not going to stop fighting for Dean. He's such a great brother.
- John's known about Sam's abilities for a while now. Hmmm.
- The Demon doesn't see Dean or Sam as a threat. It's still angry at Dean though...gotta believe there's going to be something in the future about that.
- Woah, Dean doesn't remember what happened while he was a spirit. Interesting. Part of me wishes he had remembered.
- John's all smiling - that can't be right. Even the boys sense something's wrong. John's speech to Dean is heartbreaking because it's everything he needed to hear from his dad at last. You can just tell John was saying goodbye. And John was crying...you could just tell he meant every word he said to Dean. I so wish we could have heard what John whispered to Dean, though! Aaaarrrrggggg! So frustrating. Wonder if we'll ever find out. I like the theory that he indicated something about Sam's abilities that Dean needed to know.
Again, great work all around. I can tell I'm going to be re-watching this episode quite a bit this week. New episodes at last. *Sigh!* I'm happy and yet sad. Sad to see John go and for the boys to go through all that turmoil. The preview for the upcoming episodes looks great. Yay to season 2!
