First Impressions: 4.22 Lucifer Rising
May. 19th, 2009 03:24 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I've abandoned my full-length episode reviews for these shorter, First Impressions posts.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

I'm trying to get this posted as soon after the episode as possible, again by using caps made from my recording of the episode. Hopefully there's still some squee left out there. ;)
Okay, well, due to RL stuff, I didn't get this done as soon as I would've liked. But better late than never, right? Also, the fanart caps came from the HQ download of the eppy this time. Pretty, huh? *drools* Choosing each of their CU shots was easy.
As for the notes, they're much longer than usual because I'd already watched the episode about 5 times by the time I typed them out. It's not easy to take notes as if you're watching the episode for the first time. So I kinda failed in that department, but I hope you enjoy reading them anyway.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.
Recap: Of course we get “Carry On Wayward Son”. There can be no other way to end the season! Meanwhile, it covers all the main points: Dean's resurrection from Hell by Castiel, Sam's demon blood addiction, Alastair, Lilith, Anna, Zachariah, Chuck, & the events of the previous episode.
We start off in St. Mary's Convent in Ilchester, Maryland, 1972.
A priest is quickly overcome by demon smoke.
He's then preaching to room of nuns...talking about their father....but it's not God of whom he speaks, but Lucifer.
Says he found where his cage door opens.....right there under the convent.
It's the YED! And he's slaughtering all the nuns. Eeep.
Back in present day, Sam is looking reflective. Love the out of focus CU.
Ruby's checking to see if he's okay.
Sam realizes Dean was right to do what he did....say what he said. Aww....Sam.
He says he's changed, for good and that Dean's better off staying away from him. *wibbles*
Another gorgeous focus-in CU of Jensen! *guh*
Dean says he's not gonna call Sam and Bobby says he's his brother “and he's drownin'”
Dean says it's too late, that Sam never wanted the hunting life, to be in the family and he even wonders if Sam's his brother....or ever was... Yikes.
Bobby's had it! Woot! Go Bobby! He lays into Dean, telling him, “Boo hoo! I'm sorry your feelings are hurt, Princess!” LOL Family is supposed to make you miserable.
Dean says he gave Sam a choice and Sam left, but Bobby counters that Dean sounds like his dad, who he considers a coward for not going after Sam years ago.
He tells Dean he's a better man than John ever was and not to be like him.
Dean turns around to the window, turns back and he's suddenly in a totally different place...gold leaf everywhere, fancy furniture.....and Castiel, who tells him "it's almost time."
We see Lilith's personal chef aka a pediatric nurse, taking a newborn from his parents and into the bowels of the hospital, but Sam & Ruby intercede....”So...we need to talk”.
Back with Dean, he's checking out his new surroundings, which keep changing subtly.
Beer & burgers....Dean staples. :)
Zachariah & Castiel show up....”The Suite life of Zach & Cas” LOL....oh, Dean....you're awesome!
Zach explains he's in a Green Room, to keep him safe until showtime.
He even offers Dean Ginger from S2 of Gilligan's Island....and Mary Ann.....but Dean refuses and wants an explanation.
All the seals have fallen, but one and Lilith has to break it.
Dean tries to get info about where, but Zach isn't cooperating....instead he reminds Dean he swore his obedience....”So obey.” Oooooooh..... Nice exchange of looks with Dean and Castiel....aka the obedient dog at Zachariah's heels.
Meanwhile, Sam & Ruby ask the demon nurse where Lilith is, but she wants to know what's in it for her, since she's dead anyway from him or Lilith.
He tells her she should worry about what happens before she dies and proceeds to painfully torture her with his mojo.
Dean decides to finally call Sam and try to patch things up.....awwww.....
He's pissed & owes Sam a serious beatdown, but he apologizes for what he said...they're brothers, family and that doesn't change. The phone beeps as he tells Sam he's sorry....
Demon nurse is in some serious pain and finally agrees to give them the info. they need.
Lilith will be at the convent we saw from 1972 at midnight to break the final seal, but the demon doesn't know what it is.
Sam agrees to kill her, but Ruby stops him, saying he'll need more blood for what's ahead.
The demon then decides to slip away into the human's brain and let the actual nurse come to consciousness, which really complicates things for Sam....
=================================
We're back in 1972, with the YED possessed priest and a room full of bloodied, dead nuns.
He asks for Lucifer to speak to him and speak he does, through the body of a dead nun on the alter.
Lucifer says Lilith can bust him out, break the seals, and he tells the YED to find a child, “a very special child”.
We cut to Sam (big hint, yes?), reading about the massacre at the convent and reads that the priest named Azazel as the demon who possessed him.
Sam doesn't want to take the nurse with them, but Ruby says this is nothing new for Sam.
So he takes her out to the car and despite her pleads & screams, shoves her into the trunk. Oh, Sammy....
Dean knocks an angel statue onto the floor, breaking it.
Instant Castiel! Love the look on Dean's face when Cas says he called for him. Like a little kid who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar! LOL
Dean wants to be taken to Sam, but Cas says it isn't wise.
Dean keeps pressing, but Cas makes it clear that Dean isn't going anywhere....especially not to see Sam.
The point is further stressed when the doors in the room disappear....along with Cas.
With the nurse screaming in the trunk as they drive, Sam is troubled by what he's doing/about to do.
He sees Dean's voicemail on his phone, but doesn't play it.
Ruby wants to make sure he's going to see this whole thing out.
And Sam's starting to think Dean might have been right about everything.
Dean's trying to smash through the walls, but it miraculously reforms before his eyes.
Zach shows up and Dean tries again to be taken to Sam, getting the same negative response.
The angel then proceeds to tell him that Lilith will break the final seal and the Apocalypse will happen.
I love how the color starts to fade from the scene here & the paintings change....great stuff.
And Dean's nearly tearful reaction to what he's hearing, that everything he's been told is now a lie. No way to stop the destruction of the world...
Zachariah says they will win in the end and it will be paradise on earth.....and humanity will pay the price.
“It happens....this isn't the first planetary enema we've delivered.” Yikes.
Sam has a part to play and Zach will make sure he plays it.
Love it when Dean brokenly asks what's going to happen to his brother. *wibbles*
Zach says to forget Sam, Dean still is chosen, is still vital. He will stop Lucifer.
“You're going to stop Lucifer. Our own little Russel Crowe complete with surly attitude.” Hee! Gotta agree with that one.
When Dean wins his reward will be huge.....peace, happiness “2 virgins & 70 sluts”. *snort*
Dean wants to know where God is in all this....Zachariah: “God? God has left the building.”
===============================
A police officer is checking out the abandoned convent and finds Lilith.
Bad news for him, she's there for mass....and so is he. Ooops.
Dean tries to call Sam again, but can't get a signal.
Cas appears....”You can't reach him, Dean. You're outside your coverage zone.” LOL Cas made a funny...again! Dean's really rubbing off on him. Heehee!
The angels will do nothing to Sam....he's going to do it to himself.
Cas is sorry this is happening and Dean tries to hit him and gets a sore hand in the process....ouch!
Cas says this is long foretold, but Dean says it's a bunch of lies to keep them in line.
Dean: “You know what's real? People. Families. That's real. And you're gonna watch them all burn?”
Castiel: “What is so worth saving? I see nothing but pain here. I see inside you. I see your guilt, your anger, confusion. In paradise all is forgiven. You'll be at peace, even with Sam.”
Dean: “You can take your peace and shove it up your lilly white ass. Cause I'll take the pain and the guilt. I'll even take Sam as is. It's a lot better than being some Stepford bitch in paradise. This is simple Cas. No more crap about being a good soldier. There is a right and there is a wrong here and you know it. Look at me! You know it! Now you were gonna help me once, weren't you? You were gonna warn me about all this before they dragged you back to Bible camp. Help me, now....please.
Castiel: “What would you have me do?”
Dean: “Get me to Sam. We can stop this before it's too late!”
Castiel: “I do that, we will all be hunted. We'll all be killed.”
Dean: “If there's anything worth dying for, this is it.”
(Castiel shakes his head)
Dean: “You spineless, soulless, son of a bitch! What do you care about dyin' you're already dead. We're done.”
Castiel: “Dean.”
Dean: “We're done!”
And with that Cas once again disappears.
[Yes, I transcribed most of that Dean & Castiel scene. It was too good not to!]
Sam's hesitating to take the nurse's blood.
He takes a moment to listen to Dean's voicemail and hears something far different from what Dean said. Gah!!!! This is the moment where I talked to the TV, pleading for it not to be true, telling Sam that Dean didn't say those awful hateful things at all! *cries*
He then decides to go ahead....oh, Sam....
Ruby is most pleased, of course. Grrrrr.
Dean's pacing in frustration and decides he's hungry for a burger after all.....
Cas suddenly appears and has other plans. He wheels Dean around, placing his hand over Dean's mouth until Dean realizes what's going on.
Cas cuts his arm & then paints the symbols on the wall in his blood like Anna did.
Zach appears and Cas finishes the spell and sends him away!
Cas says they have to find Sam & keep him from killing Lilith because she is the final seal.
“She dies, the end begins.” Eeeep!
=======================
Chuck!!!! Heehee!
Sounds like Chuck is getting himself some female companionship....big time. Twenty girls!
Dean & Cas are there.
Brief scene with Lilith, as she comforts another demon with, “Don't worry. We're going to save the world.”
As soon as she turns around all the demons in the hallway are down. Did Sam do that? Whoah.
'Cause Sam & Ruby appear as Lilith closes the doors.
Dean finds out about the convent and Chuck says they're not supposed to be there, they're not in this story.
Cas says they're making it up as they go.
Suddenly the archangel shows up to defend Chuck and Cas says he'll hold him off, all of them and sends Dean off to stop Sam.
Love the little moment between Cas & Chuck. Heehee!
Sam & Ruby break into the room & Sam shoves Lilith up against the altar.
Dean arrives just in time for Ruby to slam the doors closed.
Sam's ready...”I've been waiting for this, for a very long time.”
Lilith says to take his best shot....and he does, with light filling her.
Everything slows down and Sam stops when he hears Dean calling him and pounding on the door. *loves*
Ruby is still yelling at him to continue and it looks like maybe he won't except Lilith starts laughing at him and tells him he turned himself into a freak, a monster, and now he won't bite.
That's all it takes for Sam.....his eyes turn completely black as he finishes off Lilith, her body slumping to the floor.
=============================
Lilith's blood starts to drain and leave a trail across the floor with a definite direction....this can't be good.
Ruby finally confesses that Sam did it....he opened the door, releasing Lucifer.
Sam can't believe it.
Ruby: "And it is written that the first demon shall be the last seal."
Dean's still trying to break through the doors....
Ruby says nobody knew, not Alastair, only Lilith. She was the most loyal.
Ruby: "Yeah, I'm sure you're a little angry right now. But c'mon, Sam. Even you have to admit - I'm, I'm awesome!"
Sam tries to take her out with his powers, but staggers back in pain. Ruby says he shot his load taking down Lilith.
He thinks her blood poisoned him, but she explains it was just him, his choices.
“You didn't need the feather to fly - you had it in you the whole time, Dumbo.” Love this line! Heehee!
She goes on about it being a miracle. Everything that was done to get him there. It had to be him.
Poor Sammy. He's just....*wants to hug him*
She assures him he'll be rewarded....sounds familiar, huh?
Dean finally gets through!
Ruby: “You're too late.”
Dean: “I don't care.”
Awesome!
Sam grabs Ruby from behind and Dean stabs her with the knife! Yes!!!!! It's awesome seeing the boys kill her together.
Oh, Sammy....”I'm sorry.”
Then the spot on the floor with the blood erupts with light and the boys start to grab for each other (OMG boys! Together again!) ....”Sammy let's go” “Dean....he's coming.” and we fade out to white for the first time in the show's history. Whoah.
Oh, my. Where to begin? Pure awesomeness! I was so excited about this season finale and I couldn't wait to see what Kripke would do. He delivered a stunning finale! Going in the brothers are apart, hurting emotionally and by the end they're together once again! *happy dances*
* So happy Bobby didn't die. Yay! I knew Kripke wouldn't do that to us. :)
* Good to see Zachariah again, but whoah, what a turn of events! My question is....Is Zach in the group of angels that Uriel was working with? Because Uriel sounded like he wanted Lucifer alive. *iz confused* Just what are the angels up to???? And where is God in all this? Doesn't he realize what's happening? Do the angels dislike humanity so much that they're willing to sacrifice them all to take out Lucifer? So many questions....
* It was awesome seeing Chuck again and I hope he survives (though he's with Castiel & we know he'll be back next season).
* Ruby's true colors are finally revealed! I knew she had an end game, I just couldn't see what. Sure, she was rotten to the core, but you gotta give her kudos for keeping up this plan for 2 whole years! That's dedication! I'm so glad she's gone because she was as deceptive as Dean always suspected she was.
* And how about Dean? You can't fault his instincts with Ruby, but the truth is he fell into the same trap that Sam did. He believed what the angels told him about being the one to stop the Apocalypse. Can we now believe that he'll be the one to take down Lucifer?
As for the boys....I couldn't be happier that they're together again, fighting side by side. It's wonderful to see. Gives me great hope for what's to come because together they're an unstoppable force. That had to be the demons & angels plan all along (are they working together on this? hmmmm....). Break up the brothers, make them distrust each other, and turn against one another. Apart they're vulnerable....we've seen this in the past.
My heart broke for Sam as he struggled with his conscience, and thinking that Dean was right, but in too deep a hole of darkness to find his way out. When he was listening to Dean's supposed voicemail it was the final straw and I wanted to scream at Sam that it wasn't true. Damn you Kripke! Rip our hearts out why don't you? Meanwhile, you could see that Dean was trying to get to Sam the entire time in the Green Room. All he wanted to do was fix things with his brother. ♥'s They took down Ruby together (just like old times) and then grabbed for each other at the very end. Awww....boys! I'm just soooo happy we didn't have to go the entire summer with them still estranged from each other. That would've killed me.
And Boo! to Kripke for the rumored cliffhanger that really wasn't. You deceptive evil genius, you! :P So what if Lucifer is loose from his cage! The boys are reunited and together and they can do anything! That's all that really matters. :D
Final cheers to Kripke for an awesome script & direction that was so alike in Kim Manners's style that it's yet another fitting tribute. Also to Jensen & Jared who delivered great performances along with Jim Beaver, Misha Collins, Genevieve Cortese, Kurt Fuller, Katherine Boecher, Rob Benedict, & Rob LaBelle.
Bring on Season Five!!!
