First Impressions: 5.02 Good God, Y'all
Sep. 18th, 2009 03:00 amA new season and a new set of episode reviews. Enjoy!
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

I'm trying to get this posted as soon after the episode as possible, again by using caps made from my recording of the episode. Hopefully there's still some squee left out there. ;)
These notes were made during my 2nd viewing of the episode. I just wanted to sit and absorb everything from the episode in the initial viewing.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.
Recap: Sam taking out Lilith and releasing Lucifer, Sam drinking demon blood, Dean is the Michael Sword, Rufus Turner, Bobby in the hospital, Ellen & Jo, the brothers fighting.
Bobby's still in the hospital....
This can't be good. So he really can't walk. :( And hasn't spoken in 3 days....
Holy Crap is right! Whoah....nice rib carvings.
Cas uses a cell phone????
LOL! Bobby.
He wants Cas to heal him, but he doesn't have all his powers anymore.
“Certain things I can do, certain things I can't.”
Castiel says there is someone who can stop Lucifer, the one who resurrected him and put the boys on the plane.
“I'm gonna find God.”
Castiel: “No, he's not on any flatbread.” LOL
Cas needs an amulet to find God.....heh, guess which one?
Noooooo. Not Dean's! *clutches it tight*
Wow....who'da thought. Dean gives it to him, reluctantly, with a “Don't lose it” order. Damn straight he'd better not lose it!
“Great. Now I feel naked.”
Rufus calls Bobby, he's under fire....from a town infested with demons.
Off to River Pass, Colorado the boys go......
Oooops...the bridge it out. Heh. Nice visual effects here.
Ooooh “Spirit In The Sky”. Nice.
Upturned car....nobody inside though....
Abandoned town, it would seem.....
Nice red Mustang, even Dean's impressed. Heh.
Uh, oh....blood.
Ellen!!!!!!
LOL Dean splashed with the Holy Water....again. Hee!
Aw, Dean gets a hug.....and a slap! Hee! She's a little pissed over the lack of contact lately.
Ellen: “You better put me on speed dial, kid.”
Dean: “Yes, ma'am” Heehee
There's a few survivors holed up inside the basement of the church.
So Ellen's been hunting with Jo.....cool.
But she's missing, along with Rufus.
The boys head out to get more guns & look for Rufus and Jo, but Dean wants Sam to stay with the others. Sam goes anyway, but suspects Dean's fears.
They split up: Sam to get salt, Dean to get the guns.
Uh, oh Sam....demons.
Okay, why didn't killing them with the knife do the whole light-up-inside thing? Hmmmm...
Oh, dear.....the blood....Sam's tempted....
Dean comes in just in time. But the thought's planted: Did he or didn't he?
=============================
Getting the townsfolk ready with the guns.
Soldier Dude: “Where'd you serve?”
Dean: “Hell.” Heh. And he ain't kiddin'.
Sam's upset that he killed those 2 teenagers at the store, wishes he could save people like he used to.
Ellen's going to go look for Jo and Sam wants to join her.
Dean's distrust comes out....oooh.....Sam shoved him! Boys! Stop it!
Ellen questions Sam about the change between him and Dean. He blames it on the stresses of the job. Riiiiiiight.
They find a house with smoke coming from the chimney, but Sam makes note that demons don't get cold.
Eeeep! It's Jo and another dude. Fight breaks out....Ellen sees Jo's eyes go black!
Rufus knocks out Sam and Ellen makes a run for it.
===============================
Sam's tied to a chair again. *sigh*
Why would demons want to hurt Sam? What the????
Jo splashes him w/holy water and then they start pouring salt in his mouth! Yikes!
Ellen returns and Dean starts to go after Sam, but he stops....needs to form a plan.
Ooooh....Rufus and Jo see demon eyes on Sam! Whoah!
And they wonder why the stuff isn't working.
Dean and Ellen talk, coming to the realization that something's not right here.
Jo thought Ellen was a demon.
There were omens....including a shooting star...Dean's figured it out....it's Revelations. It's the prelude to the 4 Horsemen.....and the one they're dealing with is War, turning the town against each other.
Sam's figured it out, too.
War comes to visit him....it's the Roger dude from the church.
He says he didn't do much, that people don't need very many reasons to kill each other.
He also knows that Sam's struggling with his demon blood hunger.
“Lust....for power. Same as always. You wanna be strong again. But not just strong....stronger than everybody. Good intentions....quick slide to hell buddy boy.”
He twists his ring and.....here we go....
Roger returns to Dean and the others, saying the demons are going to pick them off one by one.
Dean tries to explain this isn't about demons, but War has already twisted the people's minds and he and Ellen have to run out before they get shot. Eeep!
==========================
Rufus is setting up pipe bombs in the house and Jo worries about her mom running into one of them. Good point.
The people from the church are armed and on the move.
The pipe bomb goes off....it's Ellen and Dean. They fight with Rufus and Jo, try to convince them they're not demons. “Listen to me. I am not a demon.”
Damn. Jensen with demon eyes is so disturbing...and a little hot. ;)
They're all on the same page, but shots ring out.
Dean goes upstairs to free Sam and they figure out together that War's using his ring to control everyone.
Rufus is trying to get everyone to stop shooting.....”I'm getting too old for this.” Heh.
Oh, no...Ellen! Soldier dude's gonna kill her!!!!!
The boys catch up to War....just in time, too.
They cut off his ring finger.....awesome!
And just like that everyone's back to normal and War is gone.
=============================
Dean: “So, pit stop to Mount Doom?” Heehee
Heart to heart time for the brothers.....oh dear.
Sam knows Dean doesn't trust him......but he doesn't trust himself either.
He knows he still has a problem, he's messed up. “The problem's me. How far I'll go. There's something in me that, it scares the hell out of me Dean.”
He wants to stop hunting and thinks it's best they separate.
Dean agrees.....he worries about Sam too much, instead of about the hunt.
Oh, man....he even offers Sam to take the Impala....*wibbles*
But Sam turns it down. Boys!!!!!!! NO. DON'T DO THIS!!!!!
I love how Sam lovingly runs his hand across the Impala....he's saying goodbye to her, too...and well, Dean.
He gets a ride from a camper pulling out and Dean watches him go.
Dammit Boys! You know this isn't going to work! *sigh*
Another rockin' episode from the gang up north! :)
A little shocked to see that Bobby really can't walk after last week's eppy. WTH? How long is this going to last? And how did he get the rib carvings from Cas? Weird. The bit w/the amulet...omg, love how the show keeps building on the importance of this one little piece that at first seemed so small and insignificant and now has the power to find God!!!! Whoah. It'll be strange not seeing Dean wear it, so I hope Cas doesn't keep it for too long.
So awesome to see some old, familiar faces again. Rufus was as bristly and gruff as usual, Ellen was tough as nails, and Jo was equally spunky. And....wait for it.....they're all still alive!!!! Woot! Which means they can come back in future episodes! Thank the writers for that. How rare is it that favorite characters come out of an episode alive? Looking forward to their next appearances. :)
Then we have the boys. They're still not alright, but the job comes first. I appreciate Sam trying to prove to Dean that he's okay, that he can be trusted, but by the end of the episode even he's come to the realization that he's not, that he's a liability. Watching Sam walk away from Dean was the hardest scene to watch. Dean didn't argue, he let him go, but you could tell it was with a heavy heart. He's tried watching out for Sam, maybe some time apart is the answer? We know, of course, that this isn't going to work, splitting them apart. It never does. It ends in disaster every time. I expect this will go the same way. One of them is going to get in dire straits and the other will come running. Secretly I hope one of them is injured or in major danger and there will be hugging involved when they reunite. :)
Oh, a couple little tidbits I spotted...
* Production Designer, Jerry Wanek, on the Pioneer Days banner in town. Hee!
* Continuity Error in the final scene. In the wide shot, Sam turns to leave the table and puts his leg over the side of the bench. Then in the medium shot, he again lifts his leg over the bench before getting up. Ooopsie!
So bravo! show. I hope SPN stood the first test up against Fringe. At least GA was still a rerun, but oy, once it starts again. *worries* I think this season is going to be the toughest one yet for ratings.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
