With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.

I'm trying to get this posted as soon after the episode as possible, again by using caps made from my recording of the episode. Hopefully there's still some squee left out there. ;)
These notes were made during my 2nd viewing of the episode. I just wanted to sit and absorb everything from the episode in the initial viewing.

She points out that he can't run from himself and that the past will catch up to him eventually and people will die. He says he won't make the same mistake again.

So is this Sam's subconscious trying to convince him that he's doing the same thing all over again? Oh, Sammy...
One Week Earlier....and Sam's arriving in Garber, Oklahoma

Sam burns his fake IDs....Dean looks into vampires
Sam gets a job at a bar.....Dean kills a vampire “Eat it Twilight!” LOL
Dean driving solo in the Impala....seems so wrong
He looks over at the empty seat.....yeah, he's missing Sam.
OMG....Dean in a t-shirt!!!! *flails*
Castiel!!!!!
Hee....”Cas....We've talked about this. Personal space?”
Cas: “My apologies.”
Heh.....he wants the necklace back....
But Cas isn't done w/it yet.....he's still looking for God.
He wants to go after the Archangel Raphel....the one who killed him.
Cas wants to trap and interrogate him about God. Need's Dean to help him because no angel will harm him since he's Michael's vessel.
“Oh, so I'm your bullet shield.” Heh.
Dean agrees....and Cas is about to zap them off to Maine when Dean stops him....
Dean: “Last time you zapped me someplace I didn't poop for a week! We're driving.” LMAO XD
Sam is “Keith”.....heh
Bar girl, Lindsey wants to play darts and learn more about Sam.
[I lost some stuff here because our CW station suddenly went black screen for a few seconds. Then when it came back the audio was all screwed up for a while. Bah!!!!!]
Sam sees hail and firestorms on the TV news.....uh oh.
Cas & Dean are in Maine, about to see a dept. sheriff who saw the archangel.
Cas is all “let's tell'em the truth” and Dean's having none of that....humans lie to get what they want. Hee! Love the bit of him straightening Cas's tie. Cute! Big Brother mode! :)

Bobby!!!!
He knows about the boys separation. Sam asks if he knows of anyone who can go take care of the problem.
Bobby: “Okay, lemme see if I can think of the best hunter who might be in the immediate vacinity. Oh, that'd be you!” LOL Love ya, Bobby.
But Sam quickly bows out and hangs up. *sigh*

Cas has been to Jerusalem for some rare oil....
Dean has a good chance of surviving the ritual to trap Raphael, but Cas doesn't.....uh oh.
Dean wants to know what Cas plans to do for his last night on earth....booze, women? Heh. Cas is suddenly very uncomfortable. Women it is....
Dean: “Lemme tell ya something...there are two things I know for certain. One - Bert and Ernie are gay. Two....You are NOT going to die a virgin. Not on my watch. Let's go.”
Love how Cas doesn't hesitate too long before he gets up and follows Dean. Hee!
Hmmm.....some hunters come to the bar and call Sam by name....uh oh....
He has to quickly try to explain to Lindsey that Sam is his middle name. Heh.
Bobby sent them....demons are in town and they wanna know why Sam won't join them in the hunt.
He manages to blow them off and send them on their way, but Lindsey is determined to know more about Sam.
LOL....poor Cas....he's like a deer caught in the headlights in that brothel.
Hey, is that that gal who played Lust in Mag 7? Chastity...LOL Perfect!
Dean gives Cas some cash and some instructions....
“Now just stick to the basics, okay. Do not order off the menu. Go get her, Tiger. Don't make me push you.” LOL!!!!
Soon there's screams from the back hallway. Cas did his mind-reading mojo on the girl and found out about her runaway post-office worker, father. Hee!
Dean: “This whole industry runs on absent fathers. It's the natural order.”
As they leave out the back door, Dean's laughing more than he has in a long time.....in years, he admits. But you can tell, he's thinking of Sam at the very end of that scene.
Sam's opening up to Lindsey...a little....and eating!!! OMG!
Finally tells her he used to work w/his brother, made some mistakes, did stuff he's not proud of, and a lot of people got hurt. Oh, Sammy....
She knows he was hooked on something....she's been sober 3 years.
Lindsey: “No one has ever done anything so bad that they can't be forgiven, that they can't change.”

Dean & Cas are back at the hospital to trap Raph's vessel.
Oooh....”There is well, an almost open phone line between a vessel and his angel. One just has to know how to dial.”
Cas: “I'm here...Raphael. Come and get me you little bastard.”
OMG....Castiel just said “bastard”! Dean's really rubbing off on him.
Hmmm.....lit the fire....nothing happened. The boys return “home”....
Dean: ”Well that's a day I'll never get back.” Hee!
Oh, Raphael's back at the house....nice entrance.
Hee....go, Dean! Love the insults from badass Dean.
Heh heh.....they trapped him! Woot! The little looks between Dean and Cas leading up to that were priceless.
“Hey, don't look at me, it was his idea.” LOL Dean!
Raphael says God is dead....
Hunter dude is back, looking worse for wear....this isn't right....

He confesses....that he started the apocalypse.
Raph suggests that maybe Lucifer saved Castiel....hmmm.....I'm not buying it.
Cas is gonna leave him in that ring of fire.....despite Raph's threat to find him.
Cas: “Maybe one day, but today you're my little bitch.”
Dean: “What he said.”
Heehee! Cas said “bitch”! Love Dean's little line.
Oh, man.....they've got a vial of demon blood.
They want him to drink it so he can take out the other demons.
Fight!!!! But they make him drink the blood anyway.....no! Sammy!!!!
But he wisely didn't swallow and spits it out at them. Yay! Sammy!!!!
That was an awesome fight scene! Woot! Jared! *guh*

Dean & Cas in the car....
Love how Dean steps into big brother mode, even w/Cas.....admitting that when his dad was missing, all logic said John should have been dead, but he knew in his heart that he wasn't. Then he asks what Cas believes and when he says he thinks God is still alive, Dean tells him to go find him.
Cas wants to know if Dean's okay....and he says he's good....even without Sam.
“Especially without my brother. I mean I spend so much time worrying about the son of a bitch. I mean I've had more fun with you in the past 24 hours than I've had with Sam in years. And you're not that much fun. It's funny, you know I've been so chained to my family, but now that I'm alone....hell, I'm happy.”
Oh, Dean....you're not happy. You're lying to Cas and to yourself. His expression at the end says it all. He's empty without his family, without Sam.
Sam's dreaming about Jess again....awwww
That was so sweet when he leaned into her touch right there.....
Maybe Sam's found the way. He resisted the demon blood after all.
“People can change. There is reason for hope.”
Oh wow....it's Lucifer!!!!! Eeeeek!!!!
He wants to know where Sam is....he's hard to find....heh.
OMG....it's what we thought all along.....Sam is Lucifer's vessel!!!! Gah!!!!!
“I will find you. And when I do....you will let me in. I'm sure of it.”
Of course, he needs Sam's consent.
Sam: “Why me?”
Lucifer: “Cause it had to be you Sam. It always had to be you.”
Nice mirroring of Ruby's line from last season's finale. Oh, Sammy....
Oh, my....another winner from Kripke & Co. What can I say? This season is delivering just like last season. :)
This episode is notable for being the only eppy (so far, & hopefully the only one) where the boys never see each other, never even talk to each other. Had to be interesting for Jensen & Jared to not have each other to play against. Love the opening montage with all the mirrored scenes and actions between the brothers. Very nice.
Oh, and the whole bit with Raphael claiming that God is dead? Not buying it. He says maybe Lucifer resurrected Castiel. Why? And if he did that it means he must have put Sam and Dean on that plane, too. This is what makes no sense. I can understand him saving Sam, but not Dean. Dean is Lucifer's enemy. And why pitch Sam away from the convent when he needed Sam as a vessel? Now he can't find Sam and had to take over Nick's body as a replacement. Sorry, Raph...God has not left the building. He's around....somewhere.
I feel for Sam. He's trying to move on, like he did before. Live that normal life. It won't last though, and you can tell he's already missing Dean, while at the same time struggling with the hunt/not hunt question. Meanwhile, Dean is helping Castiel and seemingly okay with his solitary life. And don't buy that major statement near the end about him being happy on his own. Take a look at the evidence, besides the look at his eyes in several scenes....
* His first question to Cas is for his necklace. Necklace = Sam (who gave it to him)
* He easily becomes big brother to Cas, straightening his tie, giving him instructions at the brothel.
* The scene where he laughs after leaving the brothel. He admits he hasn't laughed that much in years....probably not since S1's "Hell House". But again, note the look on his face at the end of the scene....remembering laughing with Sam.
* The scene w/Cas in the car near the end....it reminded me of the scene w/Sam in S4's "It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester" when Dean told Sam not to give up on his belief in angels. It's sort of the same speech....don't give up, go with what you believe in.
And I know a lot of people are upset and angry that Dean would be happy without Sam, that he would even say such a thing. IMO Dean can't change who he is that fast. And Dean has always been about his family, about Sam. This is the guy who in the Pilot said he didn't want to do this job alone. Sure, he's grown and changed a lot since then, but Dean is still Dean. He loves Sam and still cares about his little brother....always will. And despite what he said to Cas in that moment, Dean's eyes don't lie and once Cas was gone, you could see the change....Dean is not happy. He may wish he were, but he's not handling this separation as well as he thinks or wants to project that he is.
The boys will come together again. It's going to happen. Thanks to spoilers, I even know when, but I know this time apart is needed for both of them. As for them each being chosen vessels? Well, we could see this coming, couldn't we? Looks like we're headed towards a major showdown come the end of the season. Good vs. Evil, Angels vs. Demons, and Brother vs. Brother. How the show plays this out is anyone's guess, but I'm in for the long ride wherever it takes us. :)
