The Dean of 2014 is a far cry from what we're used to from 2009. He's hardened, bitter, and most of all an empty shell. Instead of a hunter he's become a soldier, leading a ragtag group of survivors defend themselves against the Croatoan victims. Looking into his darkened-by-life eyes, you can see how much has been taken away from him, stripped by the years.
He lost Sam long ago through lack of communication and then to Lucifer. The Impala lies in a heap amongst the weeds in camp and his surrogate father, Bobby, is gone as well. Even his silver ring is missing from his hand. The amulet, taken long ago by Castiel in his search for God is still missing. Whether he ever got it back is a mystery. Perhaps after losing Sam to Lucifer Dean couldn't bear to wear the necklace anymore. It would be another reminder of what he lost.
It's been a long few years. People dying, one way or another, scrounging for supplies, all the while searching for Lucifer and the Colt. The only person he really has left in his life is Castiel, and he's even ready to sacrifice him for the sake of his final mission....to kill Lucifer. When it comes down to the final showdown, he probably doesn't care which way it goes. He's lost everything and if he dies in the end, it really won't matter. Maybe that's preferable to the alternative...taking that final step and killing his brother along with Lucifer. The question would be whether Sam is even really still there anymore? Maybe it doesn't matter, since he accepted the devil's offer. There's nothing left to save, but to look into that face and pull the trigger? He has to think he can do it....to save the world or what's left of it. Maybe he'll even save a bullet for himself. After all, a life without family, without anyone he cared about, wouldn't be much of a life.
