A new season and a new set of episode reviews. Enjoy!

With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.

Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

I'm trying to get this posted as soon after the episode as possible, again by using caps made from my recording of the episode. Hopefully there's still some squee left out there. ;)

These notes were made during my 2nd viewing of the episode. I just wanted to sit and absorb everything from the episode in the initial viewing.

Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.

No recap this week. Interesting.

Weekly World News....”The Apocalypse Is Here!” Hey, they got it right. :P
Yikes! That's some rapid aging.
She rushes upstairs and.....oops he's dead.

The boys are with the CDC....did that say Bachman on Sam's?
This gal's not buying it....they're there early. New administration, “Change you can believe in.” Hee!
The corpse is 25 years old and died of old age. Dean calls Bobby, confirming this is a case. Then he asks how Bobby is....oops. :(

They're off to talk to the wife of another missing guy. Sam notices the guy's Marine tattoo...take note, this will come up in a bit. ;)
Tuesdays the guy always works late....
Dean goes upstairs to do a little snooping....finds a receipt....”Workin' late my ass!” LOL

Sam's gonna pick the lock on the room when they hear some yelling...
They burst in and.....hmmm...def not an old guy with those 2 gals in the bed. Heh.
Thinking they've got the wrong room, they turn to leave when Sam spots the tattoo on the guy's arm. It's their missing person, Clif.
LOL at Dean going right over to lift up the covers to check out the guy's birthmark.
Love how Dean smiles & winks at the girls & then instantly goes back to stern face at Clif. Heehee!

Clif begs them to not tell his wife and then tells him it was a poker game and instead of cash you play for years.
He gives him the name of the guy (Patrick, Irish accent) and that he moves around a lot. He finds you.

Dean calls Bobby again and the plan is to split up to try and find the guy.
Bobby eyes his keys and heads out himself....uh oh.

Dean and Sam haven't had much luck. It's Sam's turn to pick up some supper and Dean wants his usual with extra bacon. Hee!
Dean talks to a bartender and doesn't get much until he introduces one Ben Franklin to the guy....the way in is around back, take the elevator down.
Dean meets Bobby coming out, 'cause “brains trumps legs apparently” LOL!
Bobby found the game, but he didn't stop it...he played....and lost. :(

=========================

Dean is NOT happy....”you idiot!”
Bobby says they're his years and he can do what he wants. He lost 25 of them.
He starts to age right there and Dean goes inside, saying they're not done.

Patrick is quite the smooth-talker....
Dean comes up and convinces him to chat.
Love the gun under the table bit....good old Dean. ;)
But Patrick isn't intimidated. Dean wants to play to get Bobby back his years. Bobby protests, but Dean fires back with the “They're my years I can do what I want.” Heh.

It's game time....Patrick puts down 25 chips, but Dean asks for 50.
Patrick chants his mojo....
Dean gives up 25 of the chips to Bobby and Patrick erases Bobby's added years.
Now Dean's lost 25 years....he has to play to win them back....eep.

Sam comes back to the motel room with supper and we hear Dean in the bathroom....thing is...Dean's old and Sam doesn't recognize him at first.
Dean confesses he found the game and Bobby comes in and a little argument ensues. I love this bit, since it was our sneak peak from last week. I giggle every time at this...
Sam: “It's like 'Grumpy Old Men'”
Bobby & Dean: “Shut up Sam!”

LMAO! Love it!!!! :P
Dean's figured out that Bobby played to get out of the wheelchair.
It's too funny watching Dean encountering the realities of old age....like acid reflux that he mistakes for a heart attack. Hee!
The three suspect it's the chips that Patrick used.

Dean gets dressed and a pretty gal from housekeeping shows up at the door.
Dean works the old charm, but she just thinks he's old and adorable....”and dangerous” he adds, but she just giggles at him. Hee!

The 3 are in Bobby's van, watching Patrick cross the street as he gets hit by a car.
Looks like his neck is broken. The guy driving gets out, tries to get some help and the next thing we see is Patrick driving off in the guy's car.
Dean appears to like Patrick's style.
I really don't know what the purpose of this scene was. Seems like they could have easily done without it. Meh.

They follow Patrick to his apartment at The Statesborough and when he heads out they go in.
The elevators are out of order, so that means leaving Bobby behind.
Sam & Dean head up the stairs (and how do they even know what floor & room he's in, btw?) with Dean huffing and puffing his way up.
It's room 3701, btw. ;)
They get inside and start looking and Dean finds a safe almost right away.
He tries to open it, but his eyes aren't what they used to be.
“It's like Mission: Pathetic. Watch out.” LOL! Sam takes over and opens it easily.
The chips are inside, but they're interrupted by the gal Dean saw at the bar with Patrick. She tries to stop them, but Patrick tells her it's alright.
He tells them they're just chips and nothing special.
It's all about him being a 900 year old witch and if they want years, they gotta play.
Dean's game, but as Patrick points out he's not up to it.
Sam wants to jump in, but Dean stops him.
He lets them go, but gives Sam a parting gift....heh
“Dude, I believe that he-witch gave you The Clap.” Hee! Poor Sam.

=========================

So the guys are staying at The Cicero Motel....and Bobby needs a little help getting up the driveway in the wheelchair.
Sam still wants to play, but Dean says he's not good enough...”I'm better, Bobby's way better. We both lost.”
Sam argues that he's watched Dean hustle plenty of poker, but Bobby says he knows how the guy plays and he can take him.
The boys point out he doesn't have enough years and he'll die if he plays.
Bobby says it doesn't matter, he's got nothing to live for.
“I'm old and broke down and I...I ain't a hunter no more. I'm useless and if I wasn't such a coward I'da stuck a gun in my mouth the day I got home from the hospital.”
Sam tells him he's not going to let Bobby play again. There's gotta be a way out of this and he's going to find it. Awww...

Bobby and Dean return to the room to find Patrick's girl, Lia, waiting for them.
She's got a reversal spell to erase all of Patrick's work.
They don't understand why she'd be willing to help them and she claims she has her reasons, fingering a locket around her neck.

Patrick's playing with an old guy, Hesh, who wins 13 years and Patrick lets him go.
Sam's there and he's ready to play....

Meanwhile, Dean and Bobby are out gathering the jawbone of a murderer for the spell.
Poor Dean's finding out how painful old age can be and complaining all the way.
Dean: “My elbows...I'm all creaky.”
Bobby: “Hurry up ya crybaby.”
Dean: “Pound it up your ass, Ironsides.”

LOL! I love this banter between these “old” broken-down hunters. Hee!
“Shut up and dig, grandma.”
Dean complains about his back hurting next, but Bobby points out it nothing but sciatica and to keep digging.
“You know Bobby, killing you is officially on my Bucket List.” Heehee! Oh, Dean. :P

I really love Patrick's Irish accent! :D
He's workin' the game...telling Sam he likes him, understands how he's still being treated like the little brother at the kiddie table.
Sam's not backing off though and the game goes on...
He's eyeing that toothpick of Patrick's....breaktime.
Sam heads outside to Dean and he's got the toothpick that they need with Patrick's DNA for the ritual. He reminds Sam not to lose...

Inside Bobby's van, they do the ritual, with Bobby reading off the chant and Dean putting in the toothpick....but it doesn't work.
Patrick points out to Sam that the one he stole never passed his lips.
He starts to kill Sam...eeep!

=======================

Lia stops Patrick, telling him she gave the guys the spell.
He wants to know why and she says he knows why. We're still clueless, however.
Patrick tells Sam to keep playing.

Bobby tells Dean they need to get some more witch DNA, so it's back to the apartment....more stairs for Dean. Goody. Hee!

Okay, I know nothing about poker, so I really don't know much here except that Sam apparently wins this hand.
Patrick's impressed but then drops the bomb that Dean is suddenly running out of time...by minutes!
Sam tries to get up from the table, but Patrick keeps him in place, telling him the game isn't over yet.

Dean's searching the apartment, but collapses.

The game goes on, at a frantic pace.
Patrick: “So, when it's about your brother you get so emotional your brain just flies right out the window. Good to know.”
Sam: “Go to hell.”

Dean is dying....Sam puts all his chips in.
Patrick: “Don't do that son.”
Sam: “I can't leave until it's over? Fine. It's over, now where is my brother?”
Aww...Sammy!
Patrick: “Look, there's poker and then there's suicide.”
Sam: “Just play the hand.”

Bobby's trying to call Dean on the phone...
Patrick plays on....
It's do or die time.....and Patrick has won......
Or has he?
Sam shows his cards....4 fours.
Patrick: “Well played.”
Sam tells him to cash the chips in for Dean.

Bobby's yelling into his phone when Dean, now back to normal, comes out of the building. Yay!
Love seeing Dean happy dancing and leaping for joy! LOL! So adorable!
Bobby: “Idjit.” Heehee!

========================

We see Patrick and Lia at the table, playing.
This story between them is kinda fuzzy, but from what I can gather she's stayed young for a good many years, even burying her own elderly child.
She wants out, despite Patrick's pleadings for her to stay.
She puts all her chips in, as does he....she loses and ages, thanking him.

Bobby's impressed that Sam actually won the game. Sam says it was luck. ;)
He heads out for a booster shot. Hee!
Dean apologizes to Bobby for calling him an idiot.
Dean: “You're not useless, Bobby.”
Bobby: “Okay....good talk.”
Dean: “No, wait a minute. Listen to me. You don't stop being a soldier 'cause you got wounded in battle. Okay, no matter what shape you're in, bottom line is, you're family. I don't know if you've noticed but me and Sam, we don't have much left. I can't do this without you. I can't. So don't you dare think about checkin' out. I don't wanna hear that again.”
Bobby: “Okay.”
Dean: “Okay. Good.”
Bobby: “Thanks. Now are we done feeling our feelings? 'Cause I'd like to get out of this room before we both start growing lady parts.”
Dean: “Yeah we're done.”

Dean puts down his burger that he came in with, apparently heeding the warning of his whole experience and his poor diet. Good boy! ;)
Dean: “Let's go, Ironsides.”
Bobby: “Oh, that one's stickin' huh?”

Love that sweet little exchange between the two of them and I hope Bobby takes Dean's words to heart. They really do need him. :)

I was really looking forward to this episode after a whole week off and for the most part it delivered the goods. I liked the mix of humor and family love that Supernatural does so well. My only real issue is with the side story revolving around Patrick and Lia, which I think was delivered in a very sketchy fashion - so much that it was a little confusing to follow. Moreover, Patrick is left alive by the boys???? WTH? What's to keep him from continuing to play and kill people? I don't understand why they let him go. Seems like something is sorely missing at the end here.

Chad Everett was excellent at portraying old Dean. He clearly did a good job at studying Jensen's body language and line delivery as Dean. Most of the time I totally bought the performance. He WAS old Dean. Though personally, I can't imagine Jensen looking anything like that in 50 years. That face is going to be gorgeous for a very, very long time! *nods* Extra special kudos to Jim Beaver for some exceptional acting. At the end of his speech about feeling useless to the boys, my heart cried for him.

I loved all the family love moments: The boys towards Bobby, Bobby towards the boys, Sam & Dean towards each other. Dean didn't even hesitate to bet his life in order to save Bobby and Sam did the same to save Dean. And Dean's speech to Bobby at the end reminded me so much of the leader we saw in him as Future!Dean in "The End". He really is already heading down that road, character-wise, but hopefully without the ending we and he witnessed.
