Phew! It's amazing what all can happen in just one day's time away from the computer. And I don't normally post things like this because usually they get posted to death by the time I get to them, but I figured what the heck. There might be some on my flist (and you lurkers out there) who haven't seen these yet. So consider this a little latest news roundup, if you will.

* Three excellent accounts of a small group of fans who saw Jensen & Jared when they were filming late Friday night/Saturday morning (midnight til 5 a.m.) on location:

Tiny, mild spoiler warnings for these links, btw.

* And Kripke just did an little interview with TV Guide, reassuring the fans that everything is under control and that we have nothing to worry about. Again, there are some mild spoilers for S3 in the interview.

Now I've avoided posting my thougths here on my LJ about all the spoilers, the fandom's implosion about said spoilers, and the occassional war between the two camps. I didn't want to get caught up in the middle of it. But with Kripke's interview, I feel I can say my piece once and for all, from where I stand.

As a filmmaking student, I have some knowledge of the filmmaking process. Note, I said "some". I'm not one to go claiming I know it all. Far from it. I have a lot left to learn. But I still find I have a different perspective, perhaps on the production aspects of a film (or in this case, a TV series). I'll admit when I first read the earliest spoilers I was concerned for about 15 min. But then I realized I was worrying for nothing. Why?

1. Kripke knows what he's doing. We wouldn't have a good first season and an even better second season if he didn't.
2. By the time the first sides were posted, a good chunk of the early scripts were already written. The ideas for new characters, etc. were already firmly in place.
3. Script Sides are not an exact representation of what the finished script will be like. They are used in auditioning extra parts and are more a guideline for them to the character. Locations can change, names can change, lines can change.

A script in fact is constantly being worked on and tweaked, even during filming. The shooting script is sometimes made up of different colored pages to represent these changes to the cast and crew.

You'll notice the pink and blue pages in this script that Jensen is holding..

Here is the usual order in the colors (though there are variations): white, blue, pink, yellow, green, goldenrod, buff, salmon, cherry, tan, gray and ivory. Source Since scripts are written months in advance of filming, they will go through various changes by the time the actors shoot the scenes.

I know that even on the first student film production I was involved with, the script pages that we used during the audition process changed by the time we started filming just a few weeks later. When we were in our 3 days on the set of rehearsals, I was involved in the first read-thrus of the script with the actors and our producer/instructor. As Script Supervisor, I had to write in all the changes that were made to the script during those read-thrus.

From my own experience in watching the show, I've found it next to impossible to predict what exactly I'm going to see from week to week. And that's after I've read all the spoilers and the script sides. So I'm not worried at all about the changes that are to come in S3. I have confidence in Kripke and the writers to continue to build on their successes from S2. The show will change, that's only natural. But it will do it slowly and carefully. As Kripke states in the interview with TV Guide, they learn from their mistakes and they learn what works and what doesn't. And yes, they do listen to the fan's opinions. But wait until you see the finished product before you pass judgement. You just might be surprised by what you see come Oct. 4th.

I have no qualms with the adding of new characters to the show. We've gained some good characters like Ellen, Ash, Bobby, and yes, even Jo (after a while) from these additions. I also like characters such as Gordon and Hendrickson. They challenge the brothers. A show without any challenges would be mighty boring. My former instructor and mentor, Phil Lucas, always told his classes this example about what makes a good story. You get your character up in a tree, you throw stones at him, and then you get him down from the tree. Now, if the character just got up in the tree and nothing dramatic happened to him, it wouldn't be very exciting. He needs a problem to overcome. Dean and Sam, need the same thing. Sure, they've got all those loose demons to hunt down and Dean's life to save in a year's time, but those are long-term challenges. They need more day to day, week to week, challenges. One of the best ways to add new challenges is to introduce new characters. It doesn't mean they're going to take over the show and the brothers will suddenly be reduced to bit parts. They'll be in some of the episodes, they'll come and then they'll go.

So don't go panicking about what you think is going to happen. You might be wrong. Speculation and imagination about what's to come really doesn't mean a thing. What counts is what we'll see in the finished episodes. None of us fans really know what we'll be seeing come October. The only ones that do know are the cast and crew up in Vancouver and Kripke and the writers down in L.A. They're the ones running the show and calling the shots. We, as fans, need to believe in what they're doing and be patient...and judge the show based on what we see in the finished episodes. Not in spoilers and rumors posted beforehand.

I'm not sure if I'll get flamed for my opinions here or not. They're just my opinions and my somewhat limited knowledge of some of the production process. If your opinion on this matter differs from mine, that's fine. All I ask is that everyone keep things civil.
