Remember my earlier post about my struggles with technology Friday morning? I was hoping the day would get better.

My mom & I routinely go out on Fridays for errands and our weekly shopping. We were on our way home Friday evening from picking up some groceries and got into a car accident.

We were traveling along a main street through a residential area when a car suddenly came out from a side street right in front of us. I hit the brakes, but it wasn't enough and we collided a bit - our front, right bumper hitting the back right end of the other car. I tried to pull off the street as best I could, looked behind and thought the other driver was doing the same, as it looked like at first, but in the next second the other car was driving down into a small ditch and then tearing off down the street!!!!

Yeah, we were in a hit & run. Peachy.

The rest is kind of a blur, but lots of people were soon on the scene. There were a lot of witnesses, including people who lived along the street. One of the people who came over to check on us was the other driver's step-dad. Apparently he'd just finished chewing his step-son out, the step-son then got in a car and shot across in front of us, causing the accident. He told us he had the title on the car and assured us his step-son would pay us back for the damages.

Anyway, the step-son didn't get very far in the car and ditched it a few blocks away. I heard that some of the witnesses even went after him and tried to keep him from getting very far. He ultimately ended up back at his step-dad's house and by the time the police arrived, he told them his step-son was there. Four police cars soon arrived and they handcuffed the step-son. A lot of the witnesses hung out with mom & I, making sure we were alright. Luckily, we were fine, just shook up like you are from an accident. Our car, however, has a hole in the front right bumper and the right headlight is kinda busted (but luckily still works). The car even runs just fine, but it's definitely going to need some alignment fixing and patching. Our poor baby. :(

Got to sit in a police car (another first) when I gave my statement. The officer was nice, but at one point he kinda accused me of not being aware of my surroundings because I couldn't identify the other driver. However, it was dark, it all happened so fast, and I never even got a really good look at the car, except through our rear window as I realized the guy was not pulling over, but was getting away. So the officer getting on my case a bit bothered me a little, but in the end, after getting all my info. he sort of apologized. He said he just wanted everyone to be aware when they're driving and I assured him I am, but with the circumstances of the accident there really wasn't a chance. Luckily, a lot of the witnesses did see the other driver, and it helped that his step-dad basically turned him over to the police. Once we were given the okay to leave, we saw the step-son being given a drunk driving test.

Our car's going to be inspected by the insurance company & then go into the shop to be fixed up on Monday afternoon. *sigh* My back was quite sore for a while, but that was all the tension from the accident. It's doing better now, but who knows what I'll feel like after I get some sleep. Hopefully I won't be too sore. My mom seemed to come through the whole thing without getting sore at all.

So there you have it. Fun times, huh? Heck of a way to start the new year. Admittedly, it could have been much worse and I'm so thankful there wasn't more damage to the car or to my mom & I.
