raloriaI know, I know...I'm woefully late with this review. Fail. Big time. This originally aired Feb. 11th and I'm only now, on the evening of the episode's rerun, getting this done. Better late than never though, right? Right?
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.

spn_westcoast to monitor and discuss the episodes as they air with other viewers, I don't get to take notes during the initial showing anymore. These notes were made during tonight's rerun of the eppy.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.
Recap: Omens of the 4 Horsemen, War, Sam's blood addiction, nuthouse, dean is done.
Nervous 1st date couple, about to say goodnight. They kiss sweetly and then a bit more passionately. Next thing we know they're in her apartment going at it like a couple of rabid rabbits....really going at it....as in biting each other. Whoah. Literally devouring each other....yikes.
Sam is at the crime scene....alone for some strange reason. He's talking to the gal's roommate. Alice was "a nice girl"...a virgin.
Dean's back at the motel, relaxing and researching. Guess he was checking out the bodies at the coroner's. Not much more to be done at the moment so Sam tells Dean he can head out for his usual Valentine's Day mahem. "Unleash the Kraken" LOL
Sam: "Dean, it's Valentine Day. Your favorite holiday, remember? I mean, what do you always call it -- Unattached Drifter Christmas?"
But Dean's not interested this year and that sends up a warning flag for Sam, like when a dog doesn't eat.
Jim and Brad are discussing Jim's wife/girlfriend and how she's got Jim whipped. Sure enough, the gal shows up, looking kinda scary. She shoots Brad and then she and Jim kill each other so they can "stay together". Ooookay...
The boys are in suits (yay!) and headed to check out what's left of the latest victims. Sam eyes a strange dude in the hallway....hmmmm. The bodies are in pieces....lovely. Must be from the couple in the opening scene. Sam notices identical symbols on each of the hearts. Enochian perhaps. Time to call Cas! He shows up quite promptly. Heh.
Castiel: "I'm there now."
Dean: "Yeah, I get that."
Castiel: "I'm gonna hang up now."
Dean: "Right..."
Hee! Awkward...
Sam was right about the symbols. It's a mark of union and Cas suspects this is Cupid's doing aka a cherub 3rd class. Cas is pretty set on hunting this cupid down....whoah.
The four are at a restaurant, filled with happy couples, waiting for cupid to show up...."to polinate" as Cas says. Dean orders a burger, but isn't hungry. Cas ends up eating it instead. Weird. Cas spots Cupid and then tells the boys to meet him in the back. Cas summons Cupid....always cool when he does that chanting. *guh* Cupid appears alright....to hug the stuffing out of Dean. Heehee!

Cupid is a happy, cheerful fellow. He hugs Dean, then Cas, then Sam. Dean's a bit freaked out. Maybe because Cupid's naked. Heh.
Dean: "Is this a fight? Are we in a fight?"
Castiel: "This is... their handshake."
Dean: "I don't like it."
Castiel: "No one likes it."
Cas accuses Cupid of the deaths and he takes it pretty hard.....steps off to cry a bit. The boys send Cas over to console him. Heh. More hugging! Clearly Cupid is not to blame. He was following orders. Cas even reads his mind and confirms he's telling the truth. Dean wants to know who's orders and it's Heaven, of course. Then Cupid spills about the union of John & Mary being very important and that Dean and Sam needed to be born. This pisses Dean off and he hauls off and hits Cupid....you'd think he'd know by now that that doesn't work. Owie! Cupid bales and Sam confronts Dean again about his odd behavior, but he doesn't want to talk about it. Typical Dean...
Sam's back at the coroner's to check out another odd death. This one ate Twinkies until he died. Ugh.
Sam calls Dean & they exchange info. After hanging up, Sam sees the creepy dude from the hallway again. He goes after him and it's a demon. Sam cuts him a few times w/the knife, but he gets away, leaving his briefcase behind. Sam eyes the bloody knife. He's tempted, but wipes it off. Oh, Sam....
Back at the motel room, the boys decide to open the case. A bright light bursts out and Cas appears, identifying it as a human soul. He's also eating more burgers. Cas says the town is suffering from hunger brought on by the Horseman Famine. The hunger can be for anything....sex, love, food.
As Cas recites about Famine, we see the Horsman arrive at a Biggerson's restaurant with his entourage. He seems to infect the air around him and soon the entire place is full of people devouring food, pills, booze, and each other until they're all dead. Cas says Famine will devour the souls of his victims. The demon who had the briefcase reports to Famine....saying that Sam Winchester took it. Famine is not pleased....he's hungry. So he eats the demon's soul instead.

Sam's really starting to feel the blood hunger....uh oh. Dean and Cas go over how the boys stopped the last Horseman, War, by cutting the ring off his finger. Sam realizes he can't go with them. He reluctantly tells Dean, then tells his brother to lock him down. Oh, boys. :( Dean handcuffs Sam to the bathroom sink and then Cas blocks the door closed with the armoire.
Cas & Dean go to the Coroner's only to find out the Coroner himself is now a victim after drinking himself to death. Cas says his soul hasn't been harvested yet.
They stake out the medical center and Cas is still eating burgers. He wonders why Dean seems un-effected by Famine's influence. Dean says he doesn't know why, but he drinks, eats, and has sex when he wants to. They spot the demons and follow them.
Sam is struggling....then he hears noise outside. Uh oh...it's two of Famine's demons. They break him loose and Sam attacks, biting the woman's neck and knocking the guy out telling him, "Wait your turn". Oooooh....
Dean & Cas follow the demons to the restaurant. Cas is supposed to go in first, but when he takes too long, Dean heads inside. He sees Cas on the floor devouring some fresh ground beef before getting knocked out. Ouch! Poor Dean.

Dean is hauled in front of Famine by two of his demon goons. Cas is still eating, btw, sitting on the floor like a hungry dog. Famine says it doesn't take much to push people, but they're still hungry all the time. He notes that Dean isn't effected and puts his hand on his chest to find out why. Dean grunts in pain and Famine says he's got a deep, dark, nothing in there. He knows Dean can't fill it with anything, how broken and defeated he is and through it all he just keeps fighting and lying to himself and to Sam. Dean's not hungry because he's already dead. Ouch. Sam appears and he's got Dean worried....and rightfully so by the looks of him. Famine is happy that Sam enjoyed his snack. He tells Sam to feast on the other demons there as well. Instead, Sam pulls the demons from the bodies, with a defiant, "No". Phew! So Famine eats the souls instead. Sam tries to use his mojo on Famine, which doesn't work, but he instead goes after the souls he just ate. That seems to work, the smoke pouring out of Famine's body. Sam's exhausted afterwards and Dean looks on with concern.

The 3 are at Bobby's place and Sam is back in the panic room to detox and calling for Dean. :( Dean stands outside the door with Cas, downing some whiskey.
Castiel: "That's not him in there. Not really."
Dean: "I know."
Cas tries to comfort Dean, tell him that Sam just needs to clean the demon blood hunger from his system and he'll be fine, but Dean can't handle anymore, needing some air.
He winds up next to the Impala, tears filling his eyes as he looks to the heavens and asks for help. "Please....I can't. I need some help. Please." Oh, Dean! Oh, Sam! Oh, boys!!!!! *sniffles*
I really don't have too much to say. It was another great episode. Good to see the show back on track, headed for the epic season finale, after a couple of weaker episodes (5x11 & 5x12).
Not sure I agree that Dean has no soul anymore, as this episode implies. He's been enjoying the things he always has. It was only with the effect Famine had on the town that all that enjoyment stopped. I have no doubt that Dean's time in Hell left him partially empty, tearing a lot of who he was apart, but in many ways he's still himself....still Dean. He's changed, that's for sure, but that fighting, defiant spirit is still very much there. It's that spirit that keeps him going, keeps him fighting against the forces that say it's his destiny to be Michael's vessel, keeps him protecting the world from the apocalypse every day and helping Sam hold onto his humanity. IMO to say that Dean is empty, not longer has a soul would imply that he no longer cares. He's never had much concern over himself, that hasn't changed. He finds his purpose in helping others, in being Sam's big brother, and in doing all he can to hold on to what little he has left by defying a destiny that he's running out of ways to fight.
It's sad to see Sam succumb to the demon blood addiction again. It certainly wasn't his fault, but he'll get through this. Tough to see Dean simply standing outside the door, weary, and beaten down by it all (again). No wonder he went outside to ask for help. Desperation is really setting in now. Can they escape fate's plans for them? Good question...
Needless to say, the guys did a great job. Great fun seeing Misha go outside Castiel's normal behavior and get a glimpse of his host Jimmy again. I do hope the next eppy shows a little hint of Sam's detox or effects of his recovery, though I doubt that'll happen. A carry-over of that would be nice especially after this long hiatus. Oh, well. One week to go and it's back on the road yet again with the Winchester boys! Can't wait! :D
