Wrapping up my re-watch notes just in time for the shows return tomorrow!

12x07 - Rock Never Dies

imgbox imgbox

Dean playing Words With Friends with Mary…nice to see him smiling again. Dean’s user name is 67impala327 and Mary’s is mothermary1983. And ironically, the next word Dean can spell out with his letters is…Lucifer. Ha!

No! Wrong show….it’s not spelled Cass!!!! There’s only 1 “s” in Castiel!!!! *sigh*

Dude! That’s Kadeem Hardison???? Totally didn’t recognize him. I remember watching him on A Different World ages ago. Geez….now I feel old.

This is such a long scene between Crowley and Russell….this dialog couldn’t have been tightened up a bit? I wanna get back to the boys…

Heh….Dean’s complaining endlessly about driving all the way to L.A. and Sam’s totally tuning him out with his earbuds, listening to Vince Vincente music - which Sam tries to hide as a history podcast. Oh, Sam….sometimes you’re truly terrible at lying to your brother.

“At least I don’t look like a lumberjack.” Ooooh! Score one for Cas! Teehee!

Dean checks out the pizza box in Vince’s room and his visible disappointment when it’s empty.

Poor Cas is forced to babysit Crowley…..again.

OMG The boys passing themselves off as “The American Oasis”! LOVE all the black leather!!!! *swoons*

Kuma!!!!! I totally missed his cameo the first time watching. :)

That’s not exactly a huge crowd of fans outside the building….
I wonder what magazine Cas was looking at? I mean….what are his interests???

Lucifer really is that petulant abandoned child that’s just lashing out in anger.
Rick Springfield really did a good job in this role.
Poor Crowley really took a beating. Ouch.

Sam’s quote about Lucifer not having a plan makes me think of the way these first near-half episodes of Season 12 have been. I’m sure the writers have one, but I’m not seeing the plan so far.

12x08 - LOTUS

imgbox imgbox

I still think this episode was a horrible idea. Having Lucifer possess the President of the United States? It’s taking things too far. They broke the window of reality by not having an Obama look-alike, which they already set up as the US President years ago - twice, to be exact. I mean if the show is going to throw around all kinds of real celebrity names and cultural references, then they should maintain that level of reality. This is a huge break and it bothers me.

So he’s the most popular POTUS….well that just feeds into Lucifer’s need for attention and adoration.

Mr. Ketch sure knows how to make an entrance. Btw, I believe I spotted where the car explosion scene took place and it’s right alongside a past location from way back in Season 4.

Gotta love the set direction’s attention to detail with the bird poop on the motel sign!

And, yes…I’m still upset over Cas being so stupid to leave Kelly alone and allowing her to escape and then the boys letting themselves be captured so easily! These guys are smarter than this and I don’t like the writers dumbing them down just to move the plot along. It’s unfair to them and to us, the audience. We both deserve better.

Is Lucifer really back in the cage? How do we know?
His smoke or whatever went down the air vent and I highly doubt that’s a conduit to the cage in hell. I’m highly suspicious that he’s really gone for good.

I have to say, for a mid-season finale, this one fell pretty flat for me. :(

FINAL THOUGHTS

I think for the first time I'm really kind of disappointed in SPN. Don't get me wrong, I still love the show as always, but this season feels...aimless. There's no big bad to deal with, except Lucifer and now he's seemingly out of the picture. The British MOL are as mysterious as ever and while I'm sure we'll be learning more, I wish they weren't teasing us so long with them. What are they up to???

In seasons past there was always some big task to deal with....finding Dad, Sam's powers, Dean going to hell, Sam's demon-blood addiction, stopping the Apocalypse, soulless Sam, Leviathans, the Trials, the Mark of Cain, and defeating the Darkness. There's none of that for Season 12. The word before the season began was that they would be going smaller, more intimate. Which, I guess they have, but at the expense of any season-wide direction. I've never seen more episodes where the boys were doing less and had less scenes. The last 2 episodes alone were rather Sam & Dean light, spending a lot of time with Lucifer and Crowley and Cas. I truly miss there being a major foe or problem for the boys to deal with because so far it's like they're just treading water, waiting for something to do.

I've found myself not really super enjoying any of the episodes so far. The season premiere was strong, but after that they all sort of fizzled. No stand-outs like last season's "Baby" and "Red Meat"....but maybe they're still on the way.

I'm hoping the rest of the season is more exciting and enjoyable and that the writers have just been setting things up for an intense finish. 'Cause so far, I'm just not enjoying the ride too much.

Here's another 2 episodes of re-watch notes. I wasn't a big fan of 12x05 and 12x06 was good because of Mary's return (plus the return of Jody - yay!).

12x05 - The One You've Been Waiting For

imgbox imgbox

This episode is my least favorite of Season 12 so far. I still can’t help but feel that they missed an opportunity here to bring back the Aaron Bass character. Instead we had him way off in Germany, talking to the guys on the phone for an all-too-brief scene and that was it. Disappointing.

I know the boys told Mary that a lot of the hunting leg work was gone now thanks to the internet but I can’t help but think they’re taking it to extremes this season. Since when do the boys just sit around in a diner on their laptops - over the course of several scenes - when in the past they’d be out there hunting the baddies down in the car? I feel we’ve lost something here. Note show - boys in Impala? Exciting. Boys sitting around in a diner? Boring. Hard to believe they had no way to track Ellie. They seriously can’t track her cell phone??? It’s been done before! Sam had her phone number!

Poor Dean with his love of the grenade launcher and Sam telling him no. You get the feeling this isn’t the first time Dean’s wanted to use it and been denied. :P

Ok, seriously? Where does that pocket watch go when it’s inside the guy’s body? Does it just dissolve? ‘Cause I can’t imagine the body accepting such a foreign object like that. And considering we normally see human souls as these ethereal glowing clouds of light, this seems weird.

I still say this is a ghastly representation of Hitler. I was expecting scary, menacing…not this clown. Even his own officers seem a little confused. Happy about what you brought back guys?

It is cute how Dean keeps going on about killing Hitler at the end of the episode. Why didn’t we have another scene of him calling Aaron back and saying, “Dude. I killed Hitler. Top that!” LOL

12x06 - Celebrating The Life Of Asa Fox

imgbox imgbox

If you need proof that Sam & Dean use some secret healing cream on their facial cuts? Asa got cut on the cheek by a werewolf as a kid and years later as an adult, the scar is still there.

Hee! So adorable that Dean has to tell Jody that he killed Hitler.

It’s kind of cool that the boys are such celebrities in the hunter community. :)

Geez, Dean….butt-hurt much? But on the other side of the coin, with Mary coming back I think it’s reverted Dean back to that little 4 year old boy who lost his mom and then basically lost his dad, too, to hunting. The normal, family life he had was gone in one night. Then mom is returned and she decides to up and leave? Yeah, I guess I’d feel hurt by that, too.

Ok, and yes, Dean’s probably also afraid of losing Mary again, as Sam says. Goodness knows they’ve lost so many people over the years and getting Mary back was a gift. How can something that good stick around, right? Dean doesn’t believe in good luck or second chances like this. Life is hard, the hunting life is hard, and hunters die bloody deaths like Asa did.

Alright, so the demon’s got them locked inside the house and turned off the water so they can’t make holy water to test for who’s possessed. Uh….how about the bottles of beer??? They can’t bless that stuff and make it work? Bobby mixed holy water in beer before. Or does it have to be actual holy water???

Love how Dean’s all through the door, knife out, and asking about his brother right away. :)

And they all have a flashlight (or cell phone light) on them, but not holy water??? Slackers. LOL

Love how Jensen twirls basically any knife, including the demon-killing one after Jody tells Sam that she thinks Mary is possessed.

Here's another 2 episodes of re-watch notes. Kinda brief this time, but I really didn't have many new revelations. I still think these were 2 pretty solid episodes after the season premiere and follow-up ep. We get Mary's goodbye and then the boys dealing with her departure.

12x03 - The Foundry

imgbox imgbox

“Vince, together we can heal your sister, Wendy”
Fail!!!! This is the first time we’re hearing this line!!!! It was never in 12x02, which is the scene they show in the Then segment. Either something got cut in the 2nd episode, or they realized they hadn’t set up Vince’s sister for this episode yet and suddenly pasted the line in there. Either way, it’s just wrong.

I love and appreciate that Dean’s in denial about Mary’s struggles because he just wants “one good thing” for them for once in their lives. For once they got someone they love back instead of taken away. It’s no wonder that he wants to just latch onto Mary and not let go and with the episode pointing out all that the two of them have in common…it makes the ending all the more heartbreaking.

12x04 - American Nightmare

imgbox imgbox

Anyone else notice that when Dean is texting Mary, the whole message is on the screen but his thumbs were still hitting the keys? Oops! :P

“You don’t make a lot of friends when what’s best for a family is to split them up.”
Dean’s face after Beth says this…I know there’s a lot of fanfic out there where the boys were visited by child protective services, but you gotta wonder if that was a real threat to them as kids. Or maybe Dean’s reaction is tied to Mary’s recent departure alone?

This turns out to be one of those rare instances where Dean was totally wrong. Blinded by his feelings of abandonment by Mary? Could be. We’ve seen in the past that when Dean is hurting emotionally, he just wants to go out and kill. He’ll shoot first and ask questions later and this time he was way off the mark.

Before the mid-season finale, I got to thinking about doing a re-watch because Season 12 is making me think things I never had before about SPN and I wanted to figure out why. So I felt taking another look at the episodes was in order and I took a some notes during each one. Over the next 4 Wednesdays, I'll post the notes from 2 Season 12 episodes. Hope you enjoy the little look back over the first half of the season.

12x01 - Keep Calm And Carry On

imgbox imgbox

I think Sam was all badass and “screw you” towards Toni mainly because he figured there wasn’t any point in cooperating. Dean was dead for all he knew, so why fight to keep living - despite him boasting that he’d kill Toni & Watts and escape.

And Toni really didn’t give Sam a chance, and clearly didn’t want to. Sure, people have died on the Winchester’s watch, but they’ve also saved a ton of people too. They certainly didn’t know any other MOL were out there watching them and judging their actions! And if the British MOL really want to extend an olive branch to the US hunters (as we’ll find out in the next episode) why send Lady Bevell? She’s clearly off her rocker and extremely dangerous. They didn’t know she’d go after the Winchesters in this fashion? And why wait all these years to step in? Besides, their system, while efficient - misses the grey area of dealing with monsters. In the past even the Winchesters have allied themselves with beings that the British MOL would’ve killed outright. Can you see Crowley or Cas or Rowena still being around if the BMOL had their way? Yet, they’ve been crucial in many victories for the boys.

So Ms Watts deemed Sam so strong and resilient that she wanted to kill him or call Mr. Ketch, who Toni called a psychopath and didn’t want anywhere near her.

That push-in on Dean with the sun at his back? One of the prettiest shots of the show, ever. Goodness!

People have complained that Dean and Cas should have done better in the fight against Ms Watts. But besides the warded brass knuckles, she had some skills. Pretty sure the British MOL have quite the training program (an assumption, sure, but they seem very well organized, so why not?). Usually the boys are fighting monsters and other humans who don’t have any fight training. It’s out and out brawling. Watts had some clever skills - such as disarming Dean without him even knowing it. That’s something he’s rarely come up against.

No way did that much blood pool on the floor from Sam just cutting his palm open. Besides, the cut he shows to Toni is already coagulating.

12x02 - Mamma Mia

imgbox imgbox

So according to Toni hunters are tools, they don’t think - perpetuating the belief Henry Winchester had about hunters. No wonder the BMOL think so lowly of the Winchesters. They’re hunters living in a MOL Bunker. That’s gotta be sacrilege in their eyes, right? How dare a couple of grunts, hunters be passing themselves off as scholars and MOL?

So we have Dean and Mary back at the Bunker and Cas in Aldridge looking for Sam’s location. Dean’s been monitoring things online while Cas is his leg-man off in the field. I know some fans have criticized this and wondered why Dean wasn’t out there looking for Sam himself, but I think because Mary was with him he probably thought it best to get her back home to rest at the very least. I mean they went from the park to the Bunker and then went right out after Sam. I’m sure if he’d been on his own he simply would’ve kept looking for Sam in Aldridge.

For all of Toni’s supposed knowledge about the Winchesters….why does she have so much misinformation? She seems to think the boys report to someone for their hunts and believes some of their sources may have been compromised or bought???

Another good question….how did she get him back in that chair all chained up by herself? Ms Watts is dead and she apparently cut all ties with that driver dude. Can’t really see her lugging Sam’s big body into that chair.

Thanks to Mick, we find out Toni went against orders, which again shows how out of control she is. And if they knew this why did they send her over here???? Especially unsupervised? They must have had some misgivings because they send Mick to check up on her.

Boo! Show for not having any dialog here between Lucifer!Jenn and Vince about saving his disabled sister, which was suddenly added into the Then segment for the next episode.

I still feel we were cheated out of a brother hug upon the boys reuniting. For gosh sakes, Sam thought Dean was dead! To see him alive and well…it should have been far more of an emotional moment than what we got. All summer long I was looking forward to a touching reunion between the brothers and I still feel the sting of that loss when I watch the episode on repeated viewings. It’s just not right.

I read a great speculative Season 12 fanfic over the summer that gave me everything I wanted in a reunion between Dean and Sam and Sam and Mary. And of course, now I can't find it in my Bookmarks. *sigh* But here's one that's also pretty good: Safe And Sound.
