My Review / Observations of Playthings
Jan. 19th, 2007 05:07 amSo here's my review with 32 caps.
I made the caps in a hurry, so they're not the greatest in the world. If you still want to take any for graphics usage, feel free - a credit, of course would be appreciated.
I'm really going to try to make this review short. I swear...really. Yeah, I don't believe me either.
I'll start by saying I did ruin the episode for myself by reading the script sides and other spoilers. Usually this isn't a big problem for me, but this time it was. I remember reading the sides and being shocked that Maggie was just an imaginary friend (later a spirit). So when it happened in the episode it wasn't a big deal anymore. *Sigh* I can't give up reading spoilers though. Just can't! Otherwise, this was another great episode which was creepy (not scary, there's a difference) and had some very nice brotherly moments which I loved!
* OMG! Those dolls are super creepy! Eeeeek!
* However, that model of the hotel is cool! Oh to have had something like that when I was a kid (minus the creepy supernatural element of course). I mean, the lights actually work inside that model!!!
* "Tyler! Don't look! Don't look!" Uuumm...I think it's a little late for that. And how creepy is it that the poor guy's mouth is still moving!
* Love the scene in the motel room...which oddly enough resembles the Blue Rose motel room from Hunted. It's just a red color scheme instead of blue. Oh well. So Ava's been missing for a month! What have they been doing? Just looking for her? Dean is coffee boy! That's got to be a first. Btw, I just noticed with this episode that they each have their little preference for drinking their coffee...Dean always takes the top off of his and Sam leaves his on. I remember seeing them do this in S1 too, like in Phantom Traveler. Weird.

So Sam has found a hunt and Dean's suspicious because that isn't like him. He thought Sam would be all emo about Ava. But Sam is determined to save as many people as they can (later on we'll find out why).

Love this...
Dean: Wow. That attitude is just way too healthy for me. I'm officially uncomfortable now. Thank you.
* The antiquing and implications that they're gay are very funny. Poor Dean especially seems bothered by it "what did you mean we looked the type?". Which I think is why later on he sets up the whole issue about Sam having a doll collection. LOL That's another hilarious scene!
* I laughed out loud when Dean sat on the bed and fell backwards! And he looks great in that long-sleeved shirt - all clingy to Jensen's muscles and...mmmm...Jensen. *ahem* Sorry! Back to the review...

Dean: 'Course the most troubling question is why do these people assume we're gay?
Sam: Well you are pretty butch. They probably think you're overcompensating.
*love Jensen's smile*
Dean: Right.

* Okay, Tyler humming while that guy got hanged was super spooky. Nice camera work between showing us the model door opening and the real hotel door opening.
* Even though I knew from spoilers that Sam was going to get drunk in the episode, when it came it was totally unexpected to me.

There was no indication that he was going to be this upset (sure he's upset over Ava, but he had the distraction of the case). This is by far the best scene in the ep, brilliantly done by Jensen and Jared.

It went from amusing with Sam's comments about Dean "you're bossy...and short" to despairingly sad as he makes Dean promise to kill him if he turns evil.

As if poor Dean didn't have enough stress by making that promise to John! And I get this horrible feeling Dean is going to end up in a situation where he might be tempted to fulfill that promise by the end of the season. Sam wants to save everyone because he feels that will eventually save himself. If he can just keep saving the lives of others he won't become a killer. I loved Dean being the AwesomeBigBrother "allright time for bed. C'mon Sasquatch" and Sam being so earnest about not wanting to become what he feels is his destiny.

And this time we get Sam grabbing onto Dean's neck in a brotherly embrace! Squee! I'm telling you...we might get that real hug yet! I'm still hoping!

* Oooh! A fade to black! Very cinematic. You don't see that too much on TV.
* Poor Sammy! He's sick and Dean gives him a hard time. Heh. "Ugh. I hate you." "I know you do."

* So why is the sick mother/grandmother hidden away up in a drafty attic??? I know...it looks creepier that way. But really, if she's as ill as the daughter indicates, shouldn't she be in bed?
* I know I've seen that girl who plays Maggie before. I just can't place her, though. Grrrrr.

* Wow! Sammy got to be the big hero this week. He saved the mother and the little girl. That's gotta be the first door Dean couldn't kick down! Heh. And who else was having flashbacks to Dead In The Water when Sam came out of the pool with Tyler? They even did it in slow motion!

* This show is becoming more & more like The X-Files all the time. Another unsolved mystery just like with Croatoan.
* And I knew there had to be a scene with rain in it. They filmed this ep sometime in November, which was a very rainy month around here and up in Vancouver. I predict more rain to show up in the next few episodes.
* Another tension-filled scene between the brothers at the end as Sam reminds Dean about making the promise. You can tell Dean is now regretting making that promise. He thought Sam wouldn't remember.

* Super creepy ending with the sisters finally reunited as spirits. It's very effective with the slow motion and the music.

So the promo for next week looks cool, as usual. I'm seriously considering capping it too, because a lot of it flashed by so quickly it was hard to see what they were showing. Didn't see too much of Sam in the promo. Maybe this ep will be more centered on Dean? *Sigh* Another week to wait...
