My Review/Observations Of Heart
Mar. 25th, 2007 03:43 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
To start off, I'll say I gave in to temptation before this episode aired and read everyone's comments about it on superntaural_tv. Big mistake, I think, because I might have ruined the episode for myself. Maybe it's best to just stay away from the computer on Thursdays....
Overall, I liked the episode. Way better than Roadkill. Did I have problems with Heart? Yes, and we'll get to those. But honestly, the episode got better when I watched it again.
There are 69 caps all made by me from my original DVD recording of the episode. They aren't up to the usual quality you've seen in my regular caps, but hopefully they're still nice to look at and re-live the episode.
These are all clickable thumbnail images, larger ones & then smaller ones further down. If you click on them you'll get to see the original 598 x 313 caps.
If you want any for graphics, etc. feel free to take them, but as always, a credit would be nice.
On to the review...
* I like the slow motion as Maddie's filling up the coffee pot and then when she drops it. Very nicely done.
* Hey! It's that gal who played the doctor on Stargate SG-1! Sorry, I can't remember her name, but I recognised her right away. Funny how she's playing a doctor again. Heh.

* It's amusing seeing Dean get all excited over the prospect of hunting a werewolf down. "Awesome!" But then Sam has one of the best lines of the night with, "Okay Sparky! And you know what? After we kill it then we can go to Disneyland!"

* The boys talk to Maddie about Nate's death. She liked the guy, but admits he'd hit on "anyone within a 5 mile radius" after drinking a few. Dean instantly admires the guy, while Sam looks over at Dean and admits he knows the type! Dean catches on to Sam's comment and looks suitably offended. Haha!
* Finding out about the stalker ex-boyfriend, the boys figure he's the guy.
Dean: "Think he's our dog-faced boy?"
I instantly had a flashback to DA with that line! That's what Alec called Joshua a few times, as I recall. Too cute that Jensen got to say it again.
* I don't care if those door squeaks on the Impala doors are added in post, I still love'em!
* "maybe there's some human hearts behind the Hagen Daaz or somethin'." That line just cracks me up! Maybe it's because it sounds more like something Dean would say, but this time Sam says it. Big brother's snarkiness is rubbing off of Sammy.
* Okay...what is with the helecopter sound after they find the claw marks down that wall? And then we don't see a helecopter at all!!! Sorry...that just kind of bugs me. They just made a big deal over having that sound so loud and then there was no follow-through with it.
* I knew that cop was a gonner the second I saw him. On Star Trek he would've been wearing a red shirt and been killed off in the first 5 min. of landing on the planet.
Sam: Alright...you go. I'll stay.
Dean: Forget that. You go after the creepy ex, I'm gonna hang here with the hot chick.
Sam: Dude! Why do you always get to hang out with the girls?
Dean: Because I'm older.
Heehee! Big brother rules!
* Then we get one of my favorite scenes, where the two of them play rock-paper-scissors to see who'll stay and watch Madison. Love it how Sam thinks he's won "Dean, always with the scissors!", but Dean wants to go again. I also love that cute little frustrated grunt Dean gives when Sam beats him again! And with the same combination!
* The next scenes with Sam and Maddie are cute. He totally checks out her butt when she's looking at her mail. Then she folds her underwear laundry right in front of him! LOL! Poor Sammy gets all uncomfortable and has to go sit on the couch after that. And then Dean calls and has Sam completely pegged - telling him he's having trouble talking to her.
Dean: What's she wearing?
Sam: Bye Dean.
I swear, at first I thought Sam said his classic "bite me" to Dean. Still would've been appropriate.

And then we have Dean's "Awww, Sammy". Dean knows his little brother so well.
* Lol! Too cute how they end up watching a soap opera program together. And of course, Sam gets all caught up in the storyline like a fangirl. His "what a bitch!" line is hilarious and delivered perfectly by Jared. Had me in stitches the whole way.

* I'm a complete DeanGirl, but Sam was so cute in his scenes with Maddie. All the shy smiles and nervous laughs. He had me won over. Oh, but wait...there's Dean at the strip club. Hee! Nope...still a DeanGirl! I can keep my DeanGirl club card after all! Heehee!

* Love that long pan down from the moon to Dean leaning against the dumpster outside Kurt's place. And Dean did that cool little thing with the gun again like he did in Croatoan. He hits the gun with the clip - I wonder if that isn't something Jensen added. The music here is cool too - don't know what it is though.

* So Maddie's the werewolf. I think everyone already knew that going into the epiosode, especially if they read any of the spoilers. But I gotta say...the werewolf makeup...it's just not that impressive. Where's the fur? All we get is some ugly contacts, some creepy nails and gruesome, exaggerated teeth. Ugly...yes. Werewolf-like? Not really. I realise this is just a TV show and they don't have a big budget, but couldn't they at least have done some CGI work to make her grow some fur, or something? If any of you are on the flist of
shadow_walker3, you know she brought this up in her review. Those of you who've never been to her LJ...I heartily suggest you go to her page and check out her reviews. They're a riot! I enjoy reading them after each new episode.
* You know at first I didn't realize Dean was just knocked out. I thought he got injured more seriously. Poor Dean!
* Hard to believe that after all that's happened since Bloodlust, we're back to that same argument over shades of grey. Dean says Madison's the werewolf so they have to kill her. Sam points out that she doesn't know what she's been doing and maybe there's a way to save her. Of course, he also reminds Dean (and us) that he might be evil, too. Sam is determined to save as many people as they can. It means hope to him. Hope that he can be saved in the end.

* Nice overhead shot of the city streets at night! I instantly thought of Alias - that was sort of their trademark transition shot.
* Poor Glen. You gotta feel for the guy. He comes to having been shot and wondering what happened. And even Dean is affected by this. It's proof once again that what he perceives to be evil isn't always just out and out evil. These people didn't know what they were becoming or that they were killing others.

* When Sam lets Madison out of the closet and she sees all the scratch marks, I think she finally accepts what's happening to her, too. And then Sam quickly leaves, just like he said he would.
* Another mirror shot! They do love to use mirrors in this show!

* So just why didn't Madison turn during the night the brothers stayed with her, anyways? Just because Dean was there? They never did answer that question.

* Okay...on to the big scene of the episode...the Sammy sex scene. At first, I thought this scene was a bit forced because the two of them really didn't know each other that well and had only been together a short time. But upon viewing the ep a few more times, it seems to make more sense. Besides, the impression I got was that this was more of a heated passion sex scene than an "I love you" scene. That comes later. But here's my good and bad about this scene:
--Bad: Not quite as hot as we were all led to believe it would be. Of course, it could be because I'm a DeanGirl, but I still think Dean's scene with Cassie was hotter. This was more extreme closeups and quick shots. With Dean we got to see more. *ahem* And what was with the magic fireplace? The way they just went at it, I can hardly see them stopping to light a fire.
--Good: Good golly but Jared's been working out! The arms! The arms! And the muscles! Whoo! I think Jensen better catch up. Jared's biceps might just be larger than his now. We can't have that! Heehee!
Anyway, it was good to see Sam finally form a relationship with someone. It's been over a year since Jessica and he was too afraid to get involved with Sarah (I'm still hoping they'll see her again, though). Hopefully, this experience with Madison won't make him give up all hope.
Here's 20 caps of the scene...in small clickable thumbnails just to make it easier
* The boys once again get into their "there's got a be a way to save this person / we've done everything we can, now let's kill it" discussion. Sam still doesn't get how Dean can be so willing to kill others who are deemed evil, yet balks at the thought of killing him if he turns darkside. Excuse me...*smacks Sam* Well duh, Sam! You're his brother, after all! That's going to be just a tad difficult for him. Sorry...I'm done now.
* The whole end of the episode is sad and heartbreaking for us because it's difficult for the brothers. There's no way to save Maddie except to kill her. She accepts this...but Sam is unwilling. She wants him to shoot her. Dean, showing true compassion, prepares to step in to help.
The scene then becomes a possible look into Dean and Sam's future. The dialog between Madison and Sam becoming something we could easily hear between Sam and Dean.

Maddie: So I guess that's all there is to it, then.
Sam: Stop it. Don't talk like that.
Maddie: Sam. I don't wanna hurt anyone else. I don't wanna hurt you.
(she picks up the gun and walks over to him)
Sam: Put that down.
Maddie: I can't do it myself. I need you to help me.
Sam: Madison. No.
Maddie: Sam. I'm a monster.
Sam: You don't have to be. We can find a way, alright. I can. I'm gonna save you.
Madison: You tried. I know you tried. This is all there is left. Help me Sam. I want you to do it. I want it to be you.
Sam: I can't.
Madison: I don't want to die. I don't. But I can't live like this. This is the way you can save me. Please. I'm asking you to save me.

Even when I first watched this part of the scene, I kept imagining it playing out between Dean and Sam. Sam wanting Dean to end it all for him and Dean unwilling to do it. While it was unspoken and not really implied, you have to think Dean was thinking this, too. It could be part of the reason why he steps in and takes the gun from Maddie. He knows when he has to be in this situation there won't be anyone to step in for him. He'll be alone and forced to do the thing he cannot ever imagine himself doing - ending his brother's life.

And I love how Dean tenderly takes the gun away from Madison as the music starts. It's perfect and beautiful, and painfully sad. The great song choice by Queensryche comes in and we get a very emotional scene between the brothers, which isn't just about killing Madison, but involves their futures as well. Dean volunteers to take the shot, but Sam finally relents and says he'll do it because she asked him to. As Sam goes to end Madison's life, Dean lets a single tear fall before everything is shattered by the gunshot. And btw, how telling is it that Dean's tear falls right when the lyrics "and you were scared" are heard. And then his flinch as the gun goes off...*wibble* What an ending.
Dean: Sam, I'm sorry.
Sam: No. You're right. She's right.
Dean: Sammy I got this one. I'll do it.
Sam: She asked me to.
Dean: You don't have to.
Sam: Yes I do. Please. Just wait here.
Here are 10 clickable thumbnails of the final scene...
Dean's tear could represent several things...
-his sadness for Sam's loss
-his sadness for Sam's innocence once again being ripped away
-his acknowledgement that this could very well be his and Sam's fate
-his realisation that Sam is stronger than he ever thought possible (in repeat viewings, I kept thinking Dean's thoughts at that moment could've been "He's stronger than I'll ever be. I can't kill him if it comes down to that." ie, further backing up the demon's declaration that Dean is weak.)

Now I didn't cry over the final scene. I know many people did. It's not that I'm unfeeling, it's just very hard for me to cry over TV shows or movies. That scene in Croatoan almost broke me, however. I guess real life has been far more painful and sad to me than any TV show could ever be. But I still felt the emotional pull from the scene and all it represented besides what we were shown. Glad to see things are back on track in that respect from last week's blunder.
'Course, you all know I love my angst. Hopefully there's even more of that to come in the final episodes. The next one on April 19th (ugh, another hiatus) looks like great fun. Then it'll be angst, angst, angst, and pain, pain, pain I think until the end of the season. Still can't believe we're talking about the season finale already. I'm in such denial. The season can't be ending!
And for a final thought...Kripke...I'm still waiting for that hug. You've got 5 more episodes to give me (and most of the fandom) a brotherly hug. The consequences could be ugly. You have been warned...
Here's an extra 10 caps, again as clickable thumbnails, that didn't fit in with the review...
