4x11 Family Remains - Initial Thoughts
Jan. 16th, 2009 05:53 amThis is not to be confused with my First Impressions, which will be posted sometime over the weekend if all goes well. I just want to get some of my gut-reaction thoughts down.
First viewing reaction: Wheee! the boys are back, followed by....hmmmm.....meh.
Second viewing reaction: Hmmmm.....a lot of plot holes. :(
Loved: The first scene with the boys in the car, the boys in suits (my God they looked gorgeous!), and the final scene between them under the overpass.
Didn't Love: Uh....the writing, the non-existent lighting, and some of the camera work.
A brief list of what I feel didn't work:
- How can the creepy kids write if they've been hiding out in the walls for years?
- What was with the creepy brother??? There was no hint of him existing at all, no mention of him in the daughter's diary....WTH????
- The "night vision" scene really bothered me. What was that for? Why???? If it was supposed to be the creepy brother's POV, it looked too video night-vision and not human. Made me think of scenes from "Ghostfacers".
- Why do they have to keep repeating old jokes? We had Scooby-Doo, Deliverance, and Casper, which we've all heard on the show before.
- Why on earth was Dean nervous about going down that hole in the wall? While his little chant of "Please nobody grab my leg" was cute, this is a guy who routinely searches sewers and abandoned houses. It seemed very out of character for me.
- For messed up, but still somewhat human beings, the creepy siblings move pretty fast. Within minutes they not only killed the family dog, but slashed all the tires and got into the Impala's trunk to steal all the weapons! WTH?????? Did they have lock-picks along with those knives they seemed to have an endless supply of? How on earth did they get into that trunk?
- Why was the episode shot so darkly? I realize they wanted it creepy and the power was out and it was night, but I also like to see people's faces a bit more. Some of the scenes were so dark I felt I was missing reactions between the characters.
Btw, a few things that I've read bothered others about this eppy...the dog being killed and the rat-eating...didn't bother me at all. I can totally see Kripke grinning with glee over making the audience squirm and get upset over both of those.
My initial opinion? I liked the episode, but it's not one of SPN's best hours. I wonder if the script had to be heavily edited for time and budget (which could explain the surprise of the brother character at the end). While the brother moments were all spot on, the main story of the family and the MOTW was sorely lacking. Maybe I'll think better of the episode over time, but for right now I'm kinda meh about it.
