First Impressions: 4.11 Family Remains

raloriaI've abandoned my full-length episode reviews for these shorter, First Impressions posts.
With each of these reviews I'll include 2 cropped caps from the episode. One of Dean and one of Sam. I decided to do something different and make them b&w.
Consider these fanart. If you take either of them, please give credit. :)

As you'll see, I've returned to the more rambly, comment-while-it's-airing type of notes. I've left them "as is", so you'll see a lot of missed punctuation and lower-case on proper names. I think they're better this way, more spontaneous and fresh.
Note: "==============" signifies a commercial break.

Recap: Castiel, Dean in Hell, Alistair, the end of 4x10 (with a couple of different, unseen angles of Jensen, btw)
Damn.....the CC is off again - what's coming from the guy's TV is not what the captioning says.....so annoying.
A power outage on any other show wouldn't be a big deal, but this is SPN.....

So the boys have been hunting almost non-stop for a month and Sam's tired, but Dean's all gung-ho

“We're the opposite of okay, but we're together” I think that says a lot about Dean & Sam, too

Dean admits to enjoying torturing souls in Hell and that it doesn't matter how many lives he saves now....he can't fill the hole he has inside.....ever.
Oh, Dean! *hugs him*
I've already expressed a lot of my feelings about this episode in my Initial Thoughts post. I pretty much picked apart most of the plot holes there, so I figure now I should talk about what worked. It's easy to get sucked back into the show after such a long hiatus. Let's face it, it's just plain thrilling to see them again in new episodes. They looked great, the chemistry is still going strong, and the little brotherly moments in the episode were very nice. In essence, the show still works in the most important part - the brothers. That's all that really matters. I can forgive the stray slip-up in writing, like "Family Remains" showed. No big deal. It's going to happen and as I said in my other post, you have to wonder if a lot of those plot holes came because they had to edit the script down. It's a shame they have to do that at all, but with a small network and almost no money, I don't see it changing.
As for the episode being like "The Benders" and "No Exit"? I can see the connections and fans are going to make those. Over time a show is bound to recycle a few ideas. Besides...who said they can only have one episode where Dean searches inside the walls of a house? And sure, the final scene with the boys by the car sort of matched the one at the end of "Heaven and Hell". Maybe that was the point. Dean's more willing to talk about Hell now, which in my opinion, is a good thing. I expect there's still more to learn.
All in all, as I've said, not one of SPN's finest episodes. I still liked it because there were parts that worked, which goes to show how good a series SPN is. :)
