Let's Dance!
Mar. 9th, 2009 12:47 amI was listening to music on my iTunes and this old song from a very old movie came on and I thought, "I wonder if I can find anything about that online?" So I looked, and sadly didn't find much, but I thought I'd share anyway because LJ is quiet and I feel like posting stuff. :)
The movie? "The Unfinished Dance" from 1947 with Margaret O'Brien and Cyd Charisse. IMO this is a great ballet movie, even one step above that classic, "The Red Shoes". It's got great dancing, wonderous colorful costumes (yay! Technicolor), and a lot of emotion and drama.
I found the trailer on YouTube from iMovieFan1 (Please watch it in High Quality if you can, just click the little HQ button)
The movie was also the screen debut of Danny Thomas and he sang this sweet and charming little song, which I recorded from our old video recording of the movie years ago. I figured I'd share it as well. :)
Lyrics (typed out by me):
Once when I was feeling low,
quite some time ago
I didn't think that I could last the day
So my hat I gave a tilt,
My cane I gave a twirl
and went merrily merrily on my way
Now I didn't have a cent,
my rent, I spent
I knew I'd have to leave the key or pay
So my hat I gave a tilt,
My cane I gave a twirl
and went merrily merrily on my way
In the lining of my pocket
I happened to find a lonesome little dime
I'll just have to toss it up, says I
Heads for coffee, tails for a shine
But it fell upon the ground,
and there it found,
an open grating where it went astray
So my hat I gave a tilt,
My cane I gave a twirl
and went merrily merrily on my way

Then, just for kicks, I happened to find my all-time favorite Astaire & Rogers dance number on YouTube. This is "Pick Yourself Up" from "Swing Time" (1936). I have a book about all of their movies together and it aptly described the end of this number as Astaire & Rogers "leave the room in flames". It really is that good!
