If there's one positive thing you can say about this pandemic, it's that it's allowed for some amazing online reunions! I came across this video purely by accident on youtube a few days ago and I knew it needed to be shared. I still have to watch the whole, hour-long version of the reunion, but this video gives us some awesome moments, including many of the actors re-performing their favorite scenes & lines. Beautiful! :D
We wrap up this month's celebration of dance in film with 2 classics!
Hard to believe that Ziegfeld Follies (1946) was the only time Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly danced together. And then you can't do much better than Gene joined by Donald O'Connor in Singing In The Rain (1952). :D

Two more dance numbers from the world of cinema!
The great Vera Ellen & Gene Kelly perform a big musical number from "Words and Music" (1948). Then the lovely Cyd Charisse gets to show off her ballet moves (along w/Margaret O'Brien) in a film that really isn't a musical, "The Unfinished Dance" (1947). It's actually a pretty dark film (but very good - I recommend it!), but the ballet numbers are simply wonderful!

Fun & light and then slow & seductive with this week's continued look at dance in film.
I've always loved the Astaire and Rogers films, but there was something very special when Fred Astaire danced with Eleanor Powell. Recently I watched a very old video of Eleanor talking about meeting and dancing with Fred. Hard to believe, but he was nervous about dancing with her! He feared he wouldn't be good enough. But once she got him to relax, they worked very well together.
As for Gene Kelly, well...what can you say? Very different style compared to Astaire, but equally masterful and talented. I usually don't think about this dance from "Singing In The Rain" as being one of the film's more memorable dances, but it really is a knock-out. Cyd Charisse all lean and sexy against Kelly's reluctance.

Merry Monday: "That's Dancing"
May. 4th, 2020 04:49 amLittle known fact about me: I've loved dancing since I was just a little kid. Never took any lessons, but my parents made sure I was well versed on the greatest dancers of the movies: Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Eleanor Powell, Vera Ellen, and oh so many more! I still recall bouncing around on our sofa, pretending I was Donald O'Connor doing "Make'm Laugh" from "Singing In The Rain". I squeezed my feet into my older cousins old tap shoes (I think she DID take dance lessons at one point) because I was desperate to dance like my movie musical favorites. And when I was in high school, I finally took dance classes, but they were more like elaborate cheer routines, but I loved it!
I thought we'd spend this week looking at some of my favorite movie dance routines.
We'll start with the film "That's Dancing", which celebrated the origins of dance on film. Below are the opening credits and the music video by Kim Carnes, who did the song for the closing credits.

A day late, but this is Easter Monday, so it still works.
A delightful walk down the avenue in all their Easter finery with Judy & Fred in this 1948 musical. :)

Thankfully, Gene Kelly & Eleanor Powell didn't heed that advice, so we have these adorable and fun dance numbers! I hope these 2 videos will brighten up your day/week. :)

Merry Monday: "Shake It Off" & "POSH"
Jan. 20th, 2020 06:16 amThese 2 songs got me through a rough Sunday, so I thought I'd share them. There's really nothing to connect these songs in any way. That's just how my crazy brain works, I guess. :P
The Crooning Kings, Bing & Frank, lighting up the screen with this fabulous number from "High Society" (one of my favorite musicals!).
"Have you heard, it's in the stars
Next July we collide with Mars!
Well, did you evah
What a swell party this is"

Merry Monday: "A Holiday Reunion"
Dec. 2nd, 2019 04:20 amThis Xfinity ad was a very welcome surprise on Thanksgiving day here in the U.S.
Of course, as an 80s kid, I grew up on the E.T. movie & toys and this ad made me very emotional! In fact, I still tear up every time I watch it. This is beautiful and magical. Have tissues handy!

I wasn't even going to do this post today. It's been kind of a rough, disappointing, & stressful weekend and I just didn't feel up to finding a video. But I'm glad I did. How can you feel blue at Judy's declaration of "I Don't Care" from "In The Good Old Summertime"? And then there's nothing better than this jazz number by Bing & Louis from "High Society".
We lost two great talented entertainers last week & I realized right away I wanted to make a special post just for them. I grew up watching both of these legends & hope you enjoy these few clips.
One movie I watched from childhood was "Calamity Jane" (1953) and I can't imagine anyone else portraying this character. So many great songs & scenes, but I decided on the opening of the film which jump starts you right into the action with "The Deadwood Stage".
Something I just noticed with this sequence - from the time she enters the Golden Garter until she shoots her guns - it's one long take! No cuts at all! For like a little over a minute (which is huge in film) Doris not only jumps up on the bar twice, she's also dragged backwards in a chair, & lip-synching to the song the entire time. Amazing!
Years later, I discovered another of Doris Day's fine films, "Love Me Or Leave Me" (1955). It was the first time I'd seen her in a role that was somewhat dramatic and I thought she did an incredible job. Of course, there's also wonderful songs to showcase her singing & dancing. My favorite is "Shaking The Blues Away". Gotta love that fabulous blue dress!
Again, I grew up watching The Carol Burnett Show (I even distinctly still remember watching the very last show). What a great ensemble cast! And Tim Conway just killed it all the time, especially when he was trying to break up Harvey Korman. Here is that classic outtake (unedited) of Tim telling the Elephant Story during the Mama's Family skit. He just wouldn't let them go on with the scene! :P

Sadly, we just lost the great director, Stanley Donen, last week. So I thought it all too fitting to post a scene from one of the films he's probably known for best, "Singing In The Rain". Sure, I could have posted one of the musical's many memorable song & dance numbers, but instead, I wanted to showcase the movie's humor. Ah, the early days of sound recording for film. It must have been challenging.
That poor director! And poor Lena!
Enjoy! :)

Merry Monday: "The Great Race" Pie Fight
Jan. 14th, 2019 04:35 amSince last week's video was such a hit, let's try another one!
The biggest pie fight ever put on film. I grew up watching this movie and can quote whole lines from it. Watch for Jack Lemmon playing 2 parts, Peter Falk getting totally plastered ("Hey, Professor!"), Natalie Wood getting coated in various colored pies, and Tony Curtis (as the Great Leslie - who is always pristine) finally get hit with a pie - a white one, of course!
If you've never seen this film, I urge you to watch it! Great fun & hilarity! "Oh! Brandy! Throw more brandy!"

Not My "Little Women"
Dec. 30th, 2018 05:13 amI grew up watching the 1949 film of "Little Women" with June Allyson as Jo and always loved it. Then Winona Ryder portrayed the writer, Jo, in the 1994 version and I fell in love all over again. Try as I might, the classic with Katherine Hepburn has never appealed to me.
Learning that SPN's own Kathryn Newton would be playing Amy in a new adaptation of the story, I was eager to see it. Well, I just finished watching the 3 hours online and...I'm sadly disappointed.
From the weird, sexualized opening scene I wasn't sure what to expect. Ultimately, I found this version of the story to be boring. Why did it take them 26 minutes before even showing Jo doing any writing??? In the other movies, it's obvious that writing is Jo's passion! And where were the plays Jo wrote that were put on by the sisters? None of that was here. When Amy burns Jo's manuscript you have to wonder why Jo is so upset. Because up until that moment you don't get a feeling that she's been pouring her heart and soul onto paper for years.
I did think Kathryn did a fine job as Amy and I felt she dealt with the age stretch pretty well. I wanted to like the actress playing Jo, but I felt no connection with her or with her and the time period she was supposed to be in. In difference, the gal playing the older sister did a wonderful job with the prim & proper, Meg.
And why did they make the maid, Hannah, so angry and dislikable??? WTH?
I don't know. They stretched out some things too long and others felt rushed. There's so little connection formed between Jo and Professor Baher. They go to one philosophical symposium and then she rushes off back home! In the other films they went to the circus and the opera...she sewed his button on his coat. None of that for this film! A couple of quick conversations and hey! this is enough to have these 2 be married by the end. *sigh*
I loved the pretty cinematography. All the quiet and beautiful in-between moments of rain and sun, flowers and clothing on the line. They were lovely, but that doesn't make a great film. In all honesty, I've never read the book. I have it. Have attempted to read it a few times, but have never really gotten into it. Some day I shall. But I feel even without that knowledge, this adaptation would fall flat. It simply didn't bring the characters to life as it should have.

Video & Caps : SPN S13 Just Before
Feb. 3rd, 2018 03:29 amThis video from SPN is so much fun! I'm totally geeky over anything with SPN's production and these little views of the actors just moments before "Action!" is called and then what happens after are truly a treat!
Btw, this immediately made me think of the opening credits for "The Fall" from 2006 and not just because they used the same music. After all, that movie began with looking at a movie production in the 1920s (an accident out on location involving a train, stuntmen, and a horse falling into a river) and it was beautifully filmed in slow-motion. Check it out HERE.
Anyway, nothing spoilery here, unless you haven't seen any of the Season 13 episodes to date.

Random Ramblings
Dec. 5th, 2015 05:51 am♦♦♦ I'm a hot mess. There's no denying it. Staying up too late, not getting enough sleep, not eating all that healthy, procrastinating left & right (hello...Storify - see below). I really only have myself to blame. I'm a lazy oaf. But maybe...hopefully, now that I've admitted the problem I can fix it. Or at least truly try.
♦♦♦ Anyone else doing those Adult Coloring Books that are all the rage right now?
I've got 6 books so far and have only barely made a start in a couple of them. Not sure how "relaxing" & "therapeutic" they are for me when I have trouble trying to figure out what I want to color something. :P
♦♦♦ In "It's A Wonderful Life" why does Clarence say AS2 stands for "Angel 2nd Class"? Isn't the "S" (for second) & the "2" (for 2nd) a little redundant?
♦♦♦ I told you all that since my internet time has been toned down, that I've had more time to prepare new projects. Thought you might like to know what some of them are...
* Arrow caps
* Some icons (I'm actually quite nervous about posting these, since it's been so long since I made any icons.)
* SPN Goes B&W (I've got 28 pieces ready to post)
* More SPN Road So Far Caps
* SPN S11 1080p Hi-Res Caps for: 11x02, 11x03, 11x04.
* VanCon 2015 Filming Location Photos
♦♦♦ I don't know how I'm ever going to get caught up on Storify again. Because Storify will only show Favorites from Twitter going back to 300 I'm having to use the Storify browser add-on to add Tweets individually by hand. Got up to VanCon weekend at the end of August but...it's soooo slow. *sigh* However, I need to keep at it because I use the Tweets I save on Storify to help put my SPN Filming Locations list together.
♦♦♦ You know what's frustrating for a location hunter?
Seeing a location on Arrow that you've also seen on SPN...and you STILL can't figure out where the hell it is!!!! Grrrrrr!
