MBV 3D DVD suckage
May. 24th, 2009 02:38 pmSince I had to wait to download some updates for my Mac early this morning before heading to bed, I thought I'd take a quick look at the MBV DVD.
I played the 3D version, put on the paper glasses and was severely disappointed in the results. Yes, it added dimension, but it was also blurry and awash with bad color. I skipped around and I can't imagine trying to watch the whole film this way. I'd get a headache for sure. It was terrible. Some shots were nice and sharp, but others had ghosting and were very blurry. The color was thrown way off by the color of the glasses, making everyone nearly neon green or overly rosy pink. It was extremely distracting. I'll give it another try on our bigger TV, but I'm not holding out much hope for an improvement.
I didn't see the movie in the theaters, and I sadly didn't hear about the different process that had to be used on the film for DVD distribution until after I'd purchased it. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it had been in the theaters, but I at least thought it would be watchable. I've seen great 3D with the old process, btw. In fact, my first experience with 3D was with The Judd's music video of "Love Can Build A Bridge". That video looked amazing with only the colored, paper glasses, with the colors good and the images sharp. And that was back in the late 80s, early 90s! I'm tempted to dig out the videotape of the music video and see if the glasses are still there and try them out on MBV. Maybe it just needs different colors in the glasses or something.
I'm still glad I got the DVD, if for nothing else than to have the film in 2D with all the extras. But, yeah...color me disappointed in the 3D process for the DVD release. Ugh!
