Question: Banner Size?

raloriaSo I'm working on some new headers in Picnik (made one so far - whoo-hoo!) and I'm wondering if I should make some other fanart pieces like icons and banners from these. Question is...I really have no idea what size a banner should be.
Truth is I've seen them in all different sizes and dimensions and put in various places. I'm not even sure if I'm calling it by the correct name!
To my knowledge, a banner is like a much smaller header, which is usually large.
Am I right with this description?
If so, how big are banners generally, in rough dimensions?
What size banners do you like to use on your journals (wherever you put them)?
