:: There's more than FanFic out there: In the past I've read (or tried to read) a couple of Oprah's Book Club selections. When I saw her new choice of "A Tale Of Two Cities" & "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens, I figured it was another good opportunity to broaden my classic literature horizons. I picked up the book (the 2 are paired together in one volume) at Target the other night and I'm looking forward to diving in. I figure I'll have time to read during mom's daily radiation treatments when I don't have any SPN fanfic printed out.

:: Fangirls unite: While at Barnes & Noble the other night, mom & I got to talking to the clerk who's a SPN fangirl there. Actually, she initiated the conversation once she saw us. She's really getting to know us since we've been talking about SPN. *g* She admitted sheepishly that she hadn't watched the show since just before the "dog one". She was afraid it would make her cry. I told her it was sad, but it was a good eppy and that she needs to catch up! She agreed she would and was happy when I told her she had until the show returns on Jan. 28th.

:: FanFic In Progress: My current work is coming along. I've been writing off and on during mom's treatment sessions. I only get about 10 minutes or so, but it's amazing how much I can get written in that small amount of time. I'd say I'm roughly about a quarter of the way done, but I still haven't figured out how I'm going to end it. Guess I'll find out once I come to it. :P Btw, robo!Sam is incredibly hard to write! I don't know how the show's writers did it.

:: I haz goodies...finally: I ordered a SPN poster & the 3 pack of calendars from Creation during the Thanksgiving Day weekend last month, taking advantage of the free shipping. The calendar arrived fairly fast on December 9th, but I was concerned when the calendars didn't arrive on the same day. I waited a week and still nothing. I even emailed Sharon at Creation and she assured me they shipped together. Sure enough, the next day a package was at the door. Problem though...the calendars inside were not SPN, but 2 Xena ones instead! Gah!!! I emailed her back and she said the right ones would be sent out the next day. Yesterday they arrived and yes, they were the 3 SPN calendars. Yay! Got my Winchesters to get me through 2011. :D Meanwhile, I've got 2 Xena calendars I don't want. Anyone want them or know of anyone who'd like to have them?

:: To-Do List: Seems like everything I need to get done for Christmas has come down to one day....today. *pulls hair* Stressed? Just a tad. The good thing is that mom's appointment for today has been moved to the morning and she won't have another until after Christmas. But I still have a lot on my plate for the day and I'm pretty sure I won't get it all done. Meanwhile, my sleep schedule is all shot to hell and so are my eating habits. It's a combination of this new schedule from mom's appointments and the holidays. The building stress is in there, too, I'm sure.

Speaking of my current state, I'm not feeling all that peppy. I was okay until early Wed. evening, then I started feeling all bleh, no energy. Finally narrowed it down a couple hours later to my left arm aching. Took some Tylenol and it eventually took care of the pain, but now I still feel out of sorts. :(

:: Watermarking?: I love sharing my fanart works here on LJ, but one of my Christmas headers again got posted to Tumblr without any credit or link back to me. So I made another Tumblr entry about the problem. But this makes me wonder if I should consider watermarking my fanarts. I know others do, but I was hoping I could avoid it, but as long as people are going to repost my stuff without crediting me, I feel I should do something to claim it as mine, something that can't be easily eliminated. I just thought I'd let you all know that any future headers might very well be watermarked with my LJ username. I'll try my best to make it as inconspicuous as possible while still being useful. I won't make a final decision about this until the new year starts, but I thought I'd let you know what I'm considering.

That's all for now, I guess. Gotta get to bed soon for the treatment appointment in the morning. Hope I feel better by then. Btw, I wanna apologize again for my lack of commenting and replies back. I also owe a few of you some PMs and E-cards and I'm going to try my best to get caught up with that when we get home today. You know I love you, my friends, even if I don't have time to show it that often. *hugs flist*

Even though I'm still working on the "Singin' In The Rain" book from the library, I decided "Why not read some of the books I have here around the house?" Many of them I tried to read years ago and never got through for one reason or another. Time has passed and I might feel differently about them now.

So I dug out 3 paperback novels. It would've been a few more, but I could only reach these few. :P

Anyway, I've started reading "What Dreams May Come" by Richard Matheson. I saw the Robin Williams film when it came out, which is why I bought the book way back in 1998. It's been so long since I saw it that I really don't recall a lot of it and I think I can now read the book with fresh eyes, so to speak. As I remember when I first tackled the book, I kept comparing it to the movie too much and was disappointed that it didn't match.
I'm already through the first 2 chapters.

I guess it's the start of summer that's brought on this urge to read some fiction. As many of you know, I really don't read fiction anymore. Used to, but since getting into filmmaking, all my reading has been about that. I've re-read a lot of the SPN fanfiction I've got printed up and I've been itching for something new. Don't know why I think I have time to spare for reading, but there it is.

I've updated my Books & Movies post accordingly: http://raloria.livejournal.com/905288.html

I'm taking a stab at watching more movies & reading more books this year, so I thought I'd start a list to track my viewings/readings and give brief reviews.

The list under here... )

:: Library Goodies I've already got a bunch of photography & travel books about Vancouver plus 2 old movies and today I picked up a few more free goodies. DVDs: "The Furies", "The Perils Of Pauline", & "Good Night, and Good Luck". I also found Jim Beaver's "Life's That Way" book on the shelves! *happy dances* Really looking forward to finally reading it. :)

:: Uncool Moment of the Day Seen outside of a post office today...a person with a little stand with President Obama's picture on it with a Hitler-like mustache on his face and the words "Impeach Now!" underneath! Gah! WTH??? That's just SO WRONG!

:: Just 'Cause Poll Results Thanks everyone for voting! The votes for keeping the current 700 pixel wide size won, but there were some votes for the larger sizes too. I'm working on a way to give everyone what they want. Stay tuned. Oh, and if you haven't voted in the poll you still can: HERE. ;)

:: Bye Bye The Forgotten I didn't know when I was watching the episode Tuesday night that it would be the last one for the under-appreciated series. However, the final scenes made it all too clear. They tied things up nicely, but it was a bittersweet ending as all good shows that are canceled too soon have. There's been no formal cancellation announcement by ABC, but their sudden rescheduling of a clip show for Flash Forward in The Forgotten's timeslot next week is all too telling. Shame the network never gave it a chance. They really had some good episodes. Btw, that's the 3rd good show that ABC has canceled on me in the past 2 years. First Life On Mars, then Eastwick, and now The Forgotten. Boo! ABC! >:[

:: SPN Hiatus Only 2 weeks until the new episodes return! Man! Where'd the hiatus go? Went fast this time.

:: Random Jensen Cap 'Cause I feel like it. ;) Young, shirtless Jensen for ya! I cropped it down a little for better framing. I keep remembering his line from this moment. Something about Max having been "out there" in the degradation and filth and that he could "catch something". Teehee! :P

Had to return the DVD of "The Italian Job" to the library yesterday and decided to look around for more goodies. Boy, did I find'em. ;) I picked up two more movies, "Bad Day At Black Rock" and "That Hamilton Woman". Never seen either of them, only have heard of them or seen clips. Plus, there's the added intrigue of the one being the title of a SPN episode. ;)

Here's some books I picked up. These are all in preparation for VanCon this year. I need to get to know my camera (and photography in general) better and I'm looking into getting to learn Vancouver more, too. Plus, mom wanted me to look into some places we could go see that would be accessible for her or just seen by car.

♦ Digital photographer's handbook / Tom Ang
♦ Digital SLR cameras & photography for dummies / by David D. Busch
♦ How to photograph absolutely everything / Tom Ang
♦ Vancouver & British Columbia : the best of Vancouver's big-city attractions plus Victoria's heritage
♦ Vancouver and Victoria / Andrew Hempstead
♦ Time Out Vancouver
♦ Frommer's Vancouver & Victoria 2010, with Whistler / by Donald Olson

As for "The Italian Job"...I enjoyed it. A little fragmented and hard to follow in the beginning, but the car chase was awesome! :D

Day 13: A fictional book

Um...I really don't read fictional books anymore. I tried to read "The Adventures Of Huck Finn" earlier this year, but then prepping for VanCon picked up and I never got back to it. However, reading Huck was a plan I had to read a bunch of classics to expand my literary knowledge and I might give it another try next year. ;)

Day 14: A non-fictional book

I actually read much more non-fiction these days, usually filmmaking books. *g* Currently, I'm reading "Singin' in the Rain: The Making of an American Masterpiece" by Earl J. Hess & Pratibha A. Dabholkar, checked out from our public library system. It's one of my favorite films of all time and it's interesting to learn all the back story of how it came about. Oscar Levant as Cosmo Brown? Ugh....no. Don Lockwood, the singing cowboy? Nooooo..... Thank goodness for rewrites. :)

As far as filmmaking books go, I'm almost done with "Strike the Baby and Kill the Blonde: An Insider's Guide to Film Slang" by Dave Knox. It's an awesome little filmmaking dictionary of sorts, but written with a lot of humor. Whenever I go somewhere, like waiting for my car to be serviced, this is the book I take. I can't wait to get it finished so I can start reading it all over again. ;)

:: Went to the post office today and parked next to a car from Kansas. *glee* No, sadly it wasn't an Impala.

:: I finally, FINALLY got the books I've been looking for for months! The SPN S3 Companion book, In The Hunt, and Michael Caine's book on acting are mine at last!!!! *happy dances*

:: It was hot here in western WA today. Ugh. I think it got close to 90 (F). I don't do well in hot temps. Thank goodness for A/C in cars. :)

:: Bought a new and hopefully better antenna for the TV in my room. Haven't been able to get the local CW station since the big switch to all digital TV last month. :( Of all the stations that wouldn't come in, why did it have to be THAT one? *sigh* Here's hoping the new antenna does the job.

Okay, this post has taken far too long to post because I'm tired. :P

:: I have to learn to go to bed early. Really. This staying up late, getting up late....so not working for me. I didn't get up until 4 p.m. today. *facepalm*

:: We have a little fruit fly problem in our kitchen, but thanks to the internet I set out some home-made traps. First I put out a plastic dish with apple cider vinegar with plastic wrap on top with some small holes punched on top. That really didn't seem to be working, so I set out another little plastic container with some apple juice & a few drops of dishwashing soap (again, taking my cues from internet sites). Set them out before I went to bed and now....the apple juice one is the big hit. That dish is full of dead flies! YES! I'm not normally one to kill Mother Nature's creatures, but these bugs are a menace and there's something very satisfying of taking them out en masse like that. Die suckers! Woot! I need to dump the buggers out and set out some fresh juice, 'cause there's still some left flying around. Bah. The vinegar one worked somewhat, but they clearly love the juice better. ;)

:: I just ate half a bag of Garden Herb Triscuits, which has been my sole meal for the day so far. *facepalm*

:: Bought the newest issue of SPN magazine yesterday. There's an awesome interview with the guys in there...I'm thinking of scanning and posting it. I also picked up the Sci-Fi mag with the Misha Collins article and got the last issue of SFX with the SPN article. Woot! Score! \0/

:: I might be getting a new Digital SLR camera tomorrow. Whoo-hoo!!! It's this Canon EOS 50D. Best Buy has it on sale this week for $100 off their regular price. Not a huge sale, but every little bit helps. :) I've been looking at Canon & Nikon mostly, but this Canon camera has always stood out above the rest. I can't wait to get one and start using it. Got my sights set on heading up to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival next month for some major picture taking. My shutterbug finger is getting very twitchy now that spring is here. Wheeeee! ;D

:: Still couldn't find the SPN Companion for S3 book at my local Borders yesterday. Bummer. Looks like I'll be ordering that through Amazon.com along with that essay one.

:: Won't be taking my walk today. Bah. Got up too late, have hardly eaten anything...so no walk today. Phooey. This is turning out to be one screwed up week.

:: I use the Speed Dial add-on for FireFox, but lately the feature of being able to drag n drop the thumbnails around hasn't been working. I suspect it's because I'm using the latest beta of FF. Anyhoo, this little thing has been annoying me, 'cause my Speed Dial tabs are really a mess right now and I want to organize them and dragging & dropping is the best and fastest way. So last night I got to checking out the past versions and somehow found some beta versions of the add-on. Downloaded one, and voila! Drag n drop is back! Little things make me very happy. :D

:: Bought the book of "Supernatural: John Winchester's Journal" by Alex Arvine last night. I've started reading it already and read a bunch of the cool passages about Dean and Sam. It's neat reading and matches up well with what we already know from the show. Loved reading about how Dean slept in baby Sammy's crib to keep him safe right away after Mary's death and how he quickly showed his hunting skills. Then you've got Sam wanting to be normal almost immediately and being a geeky Mac-loving, research kid. :)

:: We've gotten a little snow already. Not much...less than an inch. I keep checking out the local radar for more snow showers, but it's all heading to the mountains in the east for now. It looks like Vancouver might be getting some of this stuff, too. I'm watching the webcams up there, but they seem normal so far.

:: Made some cool fractal backgrounds for text icons tonight with Aviary.com. Next step is to open them in Picnik and tweak/refine/resize and then add various SPN quotes. I had a lot of fun making the fractals. I never knew what color combinations I would get, but some of them were so pretty! I now have over 50 of them in a folder waiting for those next steps.

:: LJ seems unusually quiet lately. In a way that's a good thing, right? No wank going on, that I know of anyhow. But it's boring with things so quiet. I want to post things, but who will see it? *sigh* Maybe things will pick up tomorrow with reports from the NJ Con. Jared may not be there, but Jim and Misha are. Wheee! Can't wait to start reading people's reports, looking at their photos and videos. :)

Okay, time to get to those comments. *dives in*

Grabbed this meme from a couple of people on my flist. :)

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

"Talent listens to stunt coordinators, from the littlest talent to the biggest. In Tough Guys, with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, both of them already knew how to throw punches in their close-ups, but if there was an action involving other actors I'd say 'Listen, this is the way I have it choreographed, does it work for you?' And they'd listen to me."

Taking responsibility for directing action is never a problem with directors, according to Palmisano, despite their big egos. "Most directors want you to take responsibility."

~ from "Gaffers, Grips, and Best Boys" by Eric Taub

Hey, I'm an amateur filmmaker. You were expecting "Little Women"? ;)

Also today, I got an early Easter present from [livejournal.com profile] trystan830 in the mail. *big hug* :D

It took me about 2 days, but I just finished the first SPN novel by Keith R.A. DeCandido.

Please remember, this is purely my own opinion about the novel. What follows are my honest feelings which may or may not match yours. This is my journal and therefore my place to express my opinions. Feel free to express your own views in your comments. I always welcome discussion and debate on my LJ as long as it doesn't become hurtful or abusive.

Get ready for a long read behind the cut... )
